He was 11-9 in the regular season in the ACC, a league described as mediocre by the disgruntled 'but football' 'but Tommy Bowden' NCTigs on here. It looks like his roster was pretty healthy all season.
Clemson is the only team to beat Va Tech in their last 6 games and almost beat them twice despite Hall being injured and our best defensive player, David Collins, fouling out, not to mention a bunch of missed free throws.
Va Tech had won at Miami and blew out Louisville by 32 in the two games prior to Clemson beating them. Since they beat Clemson on a last second 3, they have beat ND and UNC by a wider margin.
How are these facts a case against Brownell or a case for Mike Young? You saying we should have fired Brownell to hire a coach who is barely going to make the tournament this year despite coaching in a league you say is not very good.
I don't think any objective person who watched the Clemson Va Tech games thinks Mike Young outcoached Brownell in them. Clemson looked like the better team down the stretch even though Va Tech pulled out the win.
Now do Mike Young’s overall record versus Brownell. Then compare Young’s total ACC wins in his first three seasons to Brownell’s. Now realize he’s played less conference games in that period because of the covid season yet is still ahead. Now realize that you’re trying to rationalize Young’s performance as a defense of Brownell as he, in his 3rd season, prepares to play in an ACC championship game of a tournament that Brownell hasn’t strung together 2 wins in, much less the championship, in 12 seasons.
