Tee Higgins talks The Opening, Clemson, and basketball

Tee Higgins made up his mind he was going to show out at Sunday’s Nike The Opening Combine Charlotte, held at Mallard Creek High School. Show out he did, earning an invitation to The Opening in Beaverton, Oregon in early July. Full Story »

My goodness our basketball coach needs to get on the phone. Seriously do those sports overlap? Can he play both?

Go Tigers! Once A Tiger Always A Tiger

DeAndre Hopkins played both

Apr 25, 2016, 3:30 PM

Brownell needs to give him a call. It's not like they have to use a basketball scholarship anyway.

Re: DeAndre Hopkins played both

He didn't really play both--he came out, practiced, and tried to help the basketball team, but Coach Brownell wasn't having any part of that. DH didn't even see the floor! Coach B must have thought his guys were MUCH BETTER than DH...HA! even Stevie Wonder could see that wasn't true...

Contrary, we should make CBB use a basketball scholly

Apr 25, 2016, 4:11 PM [ in reply to DeAndre Hopkins played both ]

in order to free up one more on the football team.

Playing both football and basketball effectively in college

Apr 25, 2016, 4:06 PM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Tee Higgins talks The Opening, Clemson, and basketball ]

... is almost impossible in this day and time.

The two sports have overlapping seasons to begin with. They require very different types of conditioning. And last but not least, both sports pretty much require a year-round commitment at schools with championship aspirations.

I know Nuk Hopkins was a great high school basketball player, and he probably could have done alright if he'd stayed with it at Clemson. But, then I think there's a good chance he never becomes the college or the NFL football star he is today if he had divided his attention in college.

Just my opinion ...

I agree with you and you have to have buy in from both sets of coaches, but the. I think of Charlie Ward. He's probably the most obvious and successful example of someone playing both well at this level.

And we saw Julius Peppers play both for North Carolina and

do well. So there are (or at least there were) exceptions.

Things have become so much more specialized over the past 15-20 years.

Stan Rome was an outstanding basketball player

Apr 26, 2016, 12:06 AM [ in reply to Playing both football and basketball effectively in college ]

And I think the seasons overlapped more back then. Stan went pro in football but I thought he was perhaps a better basketball player - just not as many opportunities in the NBA.
Also Bruce Ellington at USuC did quite well in both sports.

There are definitely exceptions, especially back in the day

Apr 26, 2016, 8:35 AM

We had Mike Eppley as our starting QB and our starting PG in the early 1980s ...

It's starting to sound some what like the Kimshitshe deal, I want this or I want that and I'll come to Clemson!!!!

I don't think

Rome played football until basketball was over with.

Eppley however did play both sports

Jarman played both sports I think

Rod Hall should have

Someone please get Brownlee to pick up the phone

Apr 25, 2016, 3:27 PM

If he can't make us good at basketball, you'd at least think he'd help us land a football stud.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Esp. since he is skating on thin ice with Tiger fans anyway!

Apr 25, 2016, 5:19 PM

By the way did Blossingame get an agent? If not would he be willing to come back to Clemson or did Brownlee throw him under the bus, by stating that "He is not a type of player that can bring us back when we are down (not good on 1:1)?????

Re: New Story: Tee Higgins talks The Opening, Clemson, and basketball

Apr 25, 2016, 4:18 PM

I do think the basketball team could use him.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Come on, Coach Brownell, give us a little help here.

Call the man Brownell. Email, send a letter. Do something! Good grief!***
