LOL true. The out for games BS starting

Mar 2, 2022, 5:01 PM

Early this year. We must lead the world in OL that have to leave football. Guiellrmo, and then another five star center one year had a preexisting issue about a week after arriving. He still got a full ride.
Never fear this year since our offensive line was so good last year, NOT. Plus we have all those preferred walkons, yeah buddy.

Yeah, that's right. When Clemson gives a player a scholarship and then they have an injury we don't pull their scholarship. I believe I remember a few years ago a rising freshman had a stroke and was wheelchair bound before school started. Dabo honored his scholarship that year. I'm so proud that that is the kind of school and coach that I pull for.

In all the years I have been following recruiting, I'm not sure I've ever seen a 5 star center. I've been a rabid recruiting fan since 1974 which is probably earlier than most of you were even born.
Centers aren't given high rankings like tackles and fans just think every recruit is a 5 star.

We did go out and sign the top center in the country ...

2 yrs ago....hoping Linthicum can really develop by the start of the season and possibly be the guy as the year goes on.

I'm hoping he, or a couple of our guys can play center, and be good/great at it. That's critical, for sure.

We better get a few from the portal just in case. The offensive line seems to have a mojo on it.

Probably not at schools known for football, but I would believe there are many at the very good teams on the great programs who are plenty good, but there is an even better, or at least to that coach, is not what they are looking for, who might be just a perfect fit for Clemson. Let's hope we find a hidden jewel, and he shines for us. It might just be a guy already on our roster who starts to click.

There are several 3-star, high 0.8xxx's in the portal.

Mar 2, 2022, 4:33 PM

If there ever was a time for us to utilize it, now's the time.

Putnam is much better at guard, and Linthicum and Howard are unknowns. I guess I could see a situation where both Linthicum and Howard show out in the spring and show being able to play a starter role, but we obviously can't count on one known starter if Putnam is the only guy coming out of spring .

I don't suspect we'll make any sort of move until after spring ball when we know more about the development of Linthicum and Howard. No portal guy and we can assume they stepped up. Otherwise, it's a no-brainer.

Re: TNET: Clemson OL miss 2022 - Will Putnam

Mar 2, 2022, 4:53 PM

No need to chime in with another 'this socks' post, but ... this socks.

So it's on to the portal and work in Will Putnam at Center.

(*) To those 'in the know' it would be great to share your insights about Putnam's OL skills which will either help him to succeed -or- cause him to not do so well as a Center.

We all know that if he can't do the shot gun snap well all the time, then he won't cut it at Center.

(?) When playing G, W.Putnam looked pretty quick to me and looked like he had good balance. W.Putnam is a fine Guard, even though he isn't a what one would categorize as a brawler (which limits to some degree to what he could do at G). But at Center being a brawler isn't needed as much as at Guard.

But any insights from those of you who really know OL play would be great!

Re: TNET: Clemson OL miss 2022 - Will Putnam

Mar 2, 2022, 5:15 PM

What I found curious is Dabo saying the move of Putnam had nothing to do with trotter or Hunter... As in the move was already in the works.

Re: TNET: Clemson OL to miss most of 2022 season

Mar 2, 2022, 5:07 PM

Good luck to him as it sounds like he may be going through something similar to Jay Guillermo did quite a few years ago. Hopefully whatever problem he is facing, he can overcome and grow from it. Life continues on for quite some time after football/college, taking a step away is not always the worst decision.

Re: TNET: Clemson OL to miss most of 2022 season

Mar 2, 2022, 5:36 PM

Just my thoughts...but I *feel* that Putnam moving over automatically as the number 1 before seeing what Linthicum or Howard can do tells me that neither has shown they are ready. I know Linthicum was highly rated in HS, but he looked softer than a roll of the blue Charmin and that might translate to his work ethic. Or maybe Dabo/Austin wants to light a fire under his tail.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nah, it's based on last year's status. We don't yet know

Re: TNET: Clemson OL to miss most of 2022 season

Mar 2, 2022, 9:11 PM

Can somebody explain why our OL is having issues when you consider the following on our roster that do not start or play very much, nor are rarely even mentioned:

Pennington - the 8th best OL in the nation according to 247 & 9th best OL according to ESPN

Mays - According to ESPN the 2nd best OT & 14th best player in that nation

Tucker - rated the 4th best OT by ESPN, the 10th best OT by PrepStar, & the 8th best OT by Rivals

Leigh - I realize he redshirted, but he was a 5-star recruit by most agencies; both Rivals & 247 ranked him as the 4th best OT nation

These are 4 highly rated players that should be able to contribute to our offensive line, & I find it incredulous that our program missed on all 4

This doesn't even include Linthicum

Re: Good thing we loaded up on OL in this class

If we are wanting to get back to elite status this has to improve a great deal. All great football teams control the LOS on both sides of the ball. DJ usually needs an additional second or so to find his receiver so great lineman are needed. It does seem we are snake bit on the OL.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

MEG

Did we have 15 OL prior to the Trotter/Rayburn situation

Mar 3, 2022, 4:30 PM [ in reply to Good thing we loaded up on OL in this class ]

Dabo has said he wants to carry 15 scholarship OL. He believes that is enough. He had no reason to “load up” on HS offensive linemen when his numbers were where he wanted them.

Now that he is down to 14, he has plainly said he will look to the portal for a guy to come in and fill the void.

I’m not sure what fans want him to do. It’s clear what happens when you simply sign guys with no particular plan. You see them become disenchanted and look for playing time elsewhere.

Dabo has clearly demonstrated that he runs a different type of program from many others and he’s been pretty successful at it. He’s not interested in what fans think, and with good reason.

If we’re not satisfied with Dabo’s philosophy, perhaps we need to move on in another direction.

I doubt there would be much support for that.

But fans should feel free to throw out snide criticisms for the best coach we’ve ever had if it makes them feel better.
