Haven't found any value in it at all...and I am a big social media advocate.

I've connected with a couple of old coworkers...that's about it.

Feb 5, 2013, 11:50 AM

Linked in / theFacebook /foursquare / insertnewsocialnetworking here seems..intrusive and drama laden.

I've never personally seen anything positive come from theFacebook. Unless you are Mark Zuckerburg and you got rich from it. I'm pretty socially lazy, and don't have the inclination time nor the energy to "update my status". Really, it seems rather high schoolish.

I signed up for Linked in once for about 2 days, and was pummeled with so much spam I had to change email addresses, so my experience there isn't great.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would advise against these things

Feb 5, 2013, 11:45 AM

remember - what you put on the internet about yourself can NEVER be taken back.

employers are going to look you up online. Better to put something out there like linkedin to find. I shutter to think, however, that I might have to count on linkedin to find a job.

The first day I was on it I must have gotten 20 emails

Feb 5, 2013, 12:00 PM

from not just linked in, but every diploma mill in America.

The next was about half as bad, but then I ditched it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Aren't you a head hunter?

Feb 5, 2013, 12:05 PM

I can't believe you're not on it if you are, I would think they would get the most value out of it more than anyone

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

nope.

Feb 5, 2013, 12:41 PM

IT Management. Thats why I'm always trying to hire someone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: you can't even stalk people without them knowing

Feb 5, 2013, 12:08 PM

What fun is that?

He'll, I'd like to inquire about a certain open position, but I'm afraid it would show up on my time line "cufor98 idiot applied for position x with his entire company as an audience".

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't even know how to get Linked In.

Feb 5, 2013, 12:37 PM

Of course, I've never really done any applying for jobs. They come to me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In a nutshell, yes. He!! yes.

Feb 5, 2013, 12:45 PM

I generally hate social media too. However, I got my current job off linkedin, and every good recent employee I have hired I recruited off linkedin.

Think of it this way....if you had a rolodex of everyone you had encountered professionally since you left Clemson, that would be a pretty powerful resource to have....that's all LinkedIn is really doing.

If you're in any sort of job that is remotely white collar, if you're not on LinkedIn you almost don't exist in the professional world.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

they didn't use it at all on Capitol Hill

Feb 5, 2013, 1:18 PM

but I learned before I got my current job that pretty much everybody uses it. That reminds me: I need to update my profile.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know if it will ever come in handy, but I keep mine

Feb 5, 2013, 1:27 PM [ in reply to In a nutshell, yes. He!! yes. ]

updated as best I can. I know that I'm contact with HR guys at companies that cannot hire now, but may be able to in the future. I figure it's an easy way for them to check in on me if jobs do become available.

Unfortunately, I can't really put much about what I currently do online.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"It's Baltimore, Gentlemen; the Gods will not save you."

I'd argue that "almost don't exist" stuff.

Feb 5, 2013, 3:19 PM [ in reply to In a nutshell, yes. He!! yes. ]

I've been in IT a long time..and IT in SC is a very small community.

The longer you are in it, the smaller it gets, too.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ok, if you just want to be known within IT in SC, then

Feb 5, 2013, 3:58 PM

you're set, but I'm speaking of national, international, universal, even heavenly renown.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm really not intending to leave SC...

Feb 5, 2013, 4:00 PM

But I get your point.

But seriously, you are the only person I have spoken to who has gotten anything out of linked in.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Like anything, it's how you use it.

Feb 5, 2013, 4:03 PM

I make contacts with people probably once or twice a month (some to help me, some to offer to help them) who I probably would have forgotten existed if they weren't on my LinkedIn. To me (and to my earlier analogy) it really is like the world's best rolodex.

I may have been lucky, but in a couple years and a whole lot of connection, I've probably only had one or two spam incidents, but I also am only careful to connect with people I really know.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm just not a fan of others knowing my business.

Feb 5, 2013, 4:06 PM

I'd rather control whats outh there about me. I don't do facebook for that reason.

I'd rather be judged face to face than before I ever get there.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So was this one big rhetorical question? Seems like your

mind's pretty well made up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Feb 5, 2013, 7:31 PM

Just asking and discussing, thats all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: so..linked in. Necessary?

Feb 5, 2013, 7:19 PM

I really haven't found much value in it, but I think it's necessary to have an account and give some effort to being active with it. You never know who might stumble upon you with a business deal, job offer, etc.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I guess i don't understand the point.

Feb 5, 2013, 7:24 PM

I'm no less random on Linked In than I am IRL.

Its not like its some privileged club or anything.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I guess i don't understand the point.

Feb 5, 2013, 7:35 PM

I'll give you an example of how I see it's admittedly minimal value to me.

I am a small businessman who services the financial services industry. My clients move around a lot, from job to job, and this has been especially prevalent the last 5 years with all the upheaval. Having a Linkedin account and connections with my Clients allows me to track them, and for them to know I'm still around when they resurface. I've had a few interactions with Linked In that otherwise may not have occurred, so like I said there is some minimal value in it. Also, it's free and relatively low maintenance. I check it 3-4 times a week to see who's peeked at my profile, and I also do a quick scan to see if there's a person who might be a old Client who's resurfaced, so someone with potential as a Client.
