Tough to admit

Mar 4, 2023, 8:13 PM

But thinking about how if we weren't as dominant in football as we have been, our athletic program as a whole would be no better than an NC st. or Virginia. (Big 3, not including soccer or others)

Really need to step it up in other sports. Not a good start in the new baseball era but I will give it time. Basketball is another story. Big game tonight.

Go tigers!!

Wait you are throwing out football and every other sport

So you’re just talking about baseball and basketball. (Two sports that Virginia has a recent national title in, so not sure why they are an example).

Yes, besides the big ONE, the other 2 are below average. This is big considering schools like UF, Ohio state, Alabama, UGA etc have multiple sports contributing and we don't.

I know you follow all of the sports, but that's not my point. In the big 3 if we were in the Bowden era, we would not be respected at all as an athletic program.

I think you’re mainly just talking about the decline of our baseball

Program over the last decade, which is true. But football is definitely better and men’s basketball is pretty much the same.

The decline of our baseball program and the inability to improve in basketball. Yeah that's pretty much the point of my post. I'm not throwing out football, I'm weighing in the importance. In basketball terms, Miami winning 2 conference regular season titles in 10 years, FSU to the final 4 should support that. Not sure why that's a bad take. We should have what they have based on resources.

FSU hasn’t gone to the Final Four but once. 1972 according to Google.

But, we ARE NOT in the BOWDEN era.***

I'm not sure what you're concerned about.

First, those may be "the big 3" but it's really "the big 1 and the next 2". Football rules, and we are still a premier football program in football.

Second, these big programs...Ohio State, Florida, UGA...what is so impressive? Bama is crushing it in basketball, but none of the others are. Florida is highly ranked in baseball but they had a bad football seasons. UGA isn't ranked in baseball or basketball.

Third...I'm not sure what we can/should do. Football is great...great coach, great reputation, great culture, and Dabo has made the one move coaching-wise that it seemed he absolutely needed to do. Baseball...we have a great pedigree but you still need to make the right hire. We have a first year coach and we will see how it goes. Basketball, sure a lot of people are thinking a change would be appropriate here but we're going to finish in the top 4 in the ACC with a double-bye in the ACC Tourney...yes the league is down but that's still pretty good.

And outside of "the big 3" we recently won a men's national championship in men's soccer, we're top 5 in softball.

Things are good at Clemson.

Ohio state, same football level and completely different basketball level and 2 final fours in the last 15 years or so. Check

Florida has had 2 football 2 basketball and a baseball title since 06 lol

UGA is slightly above us because of them passing us in football and a better baseball program. Like I said, it's a combination.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I gotcha. I just look at where they are right now.

Mar 4, 2023, 10:41 PM

But if your point is that they have all had success in the past ten years in more than one of “the big 3” and we haven’t, no argument from me.

Re: I gotcha. I just look at where they are right now.

Mar 4, 2023, 11:08 PM

Yes, my point thank you. It's not that I expect overall dominance in every one of the big 3, it's that I expect championship quality every now and then based on other, lesser (imo) program's successful times.

And to clarify again, this is only a big 3 discussion. Much respect to other programs but I simply do not have the time to follow them all

Bro we have been to Omaha more times than any other team without a championship.

I know. It sucks that our assistant coach left leggett and won a title with Florida. And corbin winning two at vandy. No big deal

And throwing UVA because it just surprises me looking back at how much better they have been in the other 2 sports than us the last decade.

For example, UVA didn't make the CWS until 2009. Not sure how it's hard to see the example of them rising so fast. Can be done here but hasn't

You make a good point thevalley484 that w/o FB Clemson

sports is very average and thus all our various bills from BB, BB, Soccer, etc have to be paid for by Dabo & Football Team.

Did I state it right?

I wouldn't quite put it like that, not sure if you're being sarcastic lol. All I'm saying is it could and should be better

Virginia, like Vanderbilt, found a way to give baseball

players scholarships without them being counted as scholarships. Big advantage.

Men's Soccer

I’m not sure where the OP is coming from. Clemson has many successful programs, including said soccer team. He said “athletic program as a whole” but it feels like he said “I have the sads because SC beat us in baseball today”.

I agree 100%. Don’t listen to the nay sayers that are only Tigers during football season

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's a bit misquided to be calling football, basketball & baseball

Mar 4, 2023, 11:21 PM

the big three! Football is the BIG ONE, because it is head & shoulders ahead of the others! And is baseball really bigger than softball? Seems like I read somewhere that the softball World Series had higher TV ratings than the baseball World Series.

Sure, we need to get better in baseball and basketball, but I wouldn't trade our football success for improvement in the other sports.
