Memphis

Sep 20, 2015, 9:50 PM

I said it before. The acc needs to go ahead and snatched Memphis up. Justin Fuente is building something impressive there and if they go to the acc he'll stay. If not he will leave and could end up at usuc and I don't want to see that. He's still young and can recruit and is a helluva coach. The acc would benefit so much by having a presence in the heart of the sec and they have a traditional rivalry with Louisville.

How many teams do you want to see in the ACC? Good Lord, there are too many now.

Not a chance. I lived in Memphis for 4 years. The people in Memphis don't even support the program. For the most part they either support UT or the Mississippi schools

Re: Memphis

I've lived in Memphis for that last 12 years. Fuente has changed the atmosphere. They are drawing bigger crowds they have tiger lane now and large tailgating crowds. Tiger football is bigger than tiger basketball for the first time ever. With a better conference and better opponents it would be even greater. They had over 50 thousand for the Kansas game which a few years ago people would have laughed at you if you said that would happen.

They finished last year beating byu and finished in the top 25 of the final poll and are currently on a 10 game win streak.

Re: Memphis

Sep 20, 2015, 10:57 PM

They have a president and ad now who are football crazy plus Fred smith who only cares about football.its a city of over 1 million with arguably the best high school athletes in the state. Sec coaches poach talent from there regularly. It's literally minutes away from Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana. Any talent the acc could get would be talent taken from the sec. It would only make the acc stronger and the sec weaker. The big 12 has already eyed them for expansion. Football is starting to rival the grizzlies here now. Any reason why not to do it?

I was there in 95'-97' , lived on the East Parkway , about a block off of Poplar and I can say that there are a ton of people in Memphis that are crazy about football ....but they have never had a good football team to cheer for so they sort of have this " meh " attitude it seems .
Memphis is a cool town , a little dangerous and a lot musical . I enjoyed my time there .
As far as adding the Tigers to the ACC , well ...no . Only room for one Tiger mascot in this conference .

A team that finished in the top 25 with double digit wins and a conference championship is a joke? Plus a win over byu in a bowl game and a current 10 game win streak are a joke? I live here now and I can tell you that this town has football fever because the finally have a quality team. They had Ole miss beat last year but it slipped away. Fuente is a quality coach and they have the big money backer in Fred smith who would gladly go toe to toe with the north Carolina coalition on anything. Would be a good person to have in your corner .

Re: No way, we don't need any more cupcakes***

Sep 25, 2015, 8:17 AM

Just because they have had a few decent years doesn't make them a football school. I get that people are excited about their football program right now because things are going good, but what happens if they get back to being the team they have always been? That excitement will go away and they will stop caring about football again. The last thing the acc needs is another basketball school with a cupcake football team that has small crowds. That will do nothing but make the acc look even weaker.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: No way, we don't need any more cupcakes***

Sep 25, 2015, 10:16 AM

You mean like tcu and baylor? It's called change, it happens. You get a good coach like they have and you lock him in with a big money booster like they have and you hire a football first president and ad like they have. The other finalist who had the job until Fred smith said he wanted Fuentes is now the head coach at Florida so they are obviously taking football seriously. Fuentes is a Gary Patterson disciple so he knows you can stay at a school and succeed. Do you even know the money Fred smith has and the pull he has. Papa John has nothing on him.

Re: Memphis

Sep 21, 2015, 8:17 AM

LOL - I lived in Memphis for 4 years. I'm not sure that Memphis gets all that hyped over football. They cared more for BBall when they hired Capillari (sp) and did well at that. The funny thing is that they loved beating UT that one time in football. One of my tennis partners wore a hat with that score on it every week to tick off the UT fans.

I have a son and daughter-in-law that are both Memphis alumni, and both received a great education there, so I don't know how to argue the academics part required by the ACC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

More likely them and Houston go BigXII

Sep 25, 2015, 12:15 AM

very few adds left that would make sense, but Memphis would for the ACC or XII. Expands TV footprint. Only way I see the ACC adding a team though is if ND becomes a full member including football. Then you add one more. Would rather have Memphis than UConn, Cincy, another Fla school or WVU.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Memphis

Sep 25, 2015, 2:30 AM

I don't think there are any Louisville fans that would want to rekindle a rivalry with Memphis. There fans are pretty terrible and rank up there with WVU, sUcK, and your Coots. Cinci maybe but Memphis no.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why is Memphis so important to you?

Oct 17, 2015, 2:25 PM

The ACC isn't likely to expand anytime soon unless Notre Dame is involved. Memphis is having a nice season, and I really hope they beat Ole Miss today, but I still don't think they add a lot to the ACC when you look at their overall athletic program and academic profile. And Memphis isn't exactly a huge city, nor a TV market with strong desirability.

Actually the market is well over 1 million and top 50 in the country. 45th to be exact

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That TV market is smaller than the Greenville market.

Oct 17, 2015, 2:41 PM

Not an insignificant TV market by any means, but not a reason to add a marginal university and athletic program like Memphis IMO.
