i had a dook fan, A DOOK FAN, talking to me yesterday about

Sep 16, 2013, 11:07 AM

how clemson has a rep for choking in big games when the pressure is on. he did not use the phrase "pull a clemson", but that's what he was talking about. he cautioned me about our upcoming game at NC state and reminded me of the outcome last time we played there. i politely thanked him for his advice and then ripped on dook, their team, their fans and their stadium for about 10 minutes.

please let us dispatch NC state as we should on thursday night.

FAT TAX NOW!

This is why the "Pulling a Clemson" and our "perception"

Sep 16, 2013, 11:24 AM

bothers me: it's so amorphous--whatever the person knocking the Tigers wants it to be, that's our reputation.

Is it losing big games? I think UGAy, LSU, FSU, etc. would probably not agree to that. Is it losing to people we aren't supposed to? I think everyone we played last year would disagree with that. Is it being "soft"? I think Aaron Murray and Zack Mettenberger would disagree with that. Is it starting a season quick and losing or is it starting a season slow and finishing strong--I heard both of those as our supposed reputation during the TB years. Well I think every team that doesn't finish the season undefeated does that...

People who knock Clemson are going to have criticism no matter what we do and it'll change with whatever they can find as a supposed weakness.

it will take a lot for us ever to beat the reputation

Sep 16, 2013, 11:32 AM

We could win the national championship, and go on to lose to a top 10 team the next year and it would be considered pulling a Clemson. The only way we can ever get rid of it is to go on a run like Bama has right now. Which, lets be honest, is never going to happen.

That's why Dabo had his rant about it after Georgia. He

knows that it's just lazy journalists who are all too happy to not have to actually look at what they're covering and just have someone create the story lines for them. We've lost a couple of games we shouldn't and suddenly we're the only ones that do it.

Everyone knows that last year we didn't lose to a single team that wasn't darned good. Everyone knows that you can pull a few games from almost everyone and say that they were games they should have won. But journalists are lazy and fans like something to talk smack about...especially people like Duke football fans.

My point is there's no clear definition of what

"Pulling a Clemson" is

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There is but their isn't because people are stupid

Sep 16, 2013, 6:43 PM

It's losing to inferior opponents (notably after a big win). Duke in 2004 is probably the best example, coming off the win over #3 FSU. That is "pulling a Clemson". Losing to GT in 2011 and even NCSU is not necessarily what I would consider pulling a Clemson since GT is actually a half-way-decent team and we clearly had a #### poor defense, we just didn't know it at the time. Certainly losing to good teams like FSU/USCe do not qualify, but people are morons and refuse to take the time to comprehend the true meaning of the phrase.

Duke loss was after win over #9 Miami in 2004.

Sep 16, 2013, 8:25 PM

We lost to FSU that year. We did play Duke after beating #3 FSU in 2003, but we spanked them. That is what I remember.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Meant to say that you point was exactly right though.

Sep 16, 2013, 8:26 PM

That was a terrible loss to a terrible Duke team. Terrible. I was there. Terrible.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can't define it

Sep 16, 2013, 8:26 PM [ in reply to My point is there's no clear definition of what ]

"They" just know it when they see it.

It would be great if we go 2 seasons in a row without

losing to an unranked team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When other teams lose it's a "trap game". When Clemson loses

Sep 16, 2013, 5:39 PM [ in reply to This is why the "Pulling a Clemson" and our "perception" ]

its "pulling a Clemson".

Heck, Wisconsin "pulled a Clemson" last weekend

Florida the weekend prior

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's not amorphous. It's a crystal clear reputation.

Sep 16, 2013, 6:34 PM [ in reply to This is why the "Pulling a Clemson" and our "perception" ]

Yes we have gone one year without doing it. The reputation will remain and be further reinforced if we do it again this year. Let's continue to fight the reputation by winning games like this one, then maybe in a few years we can finally bury it for good.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

At least we play in pressure situations.***

I fairly sure that we haven't lost to DOOK

Sep 16, 2013, 6:30 PM

since Spurlid roamed their sidelines, so I dismiss anything that a dook fan has to say about football. (I really never knew they had football fans)

Unfortunately, after our showing in the Orange Bowl (yes, I was there) we will be remembered as a team that collapses until we PROVE that the Clemson Tigers are a team to be feared! The season is off to a great start, and we're building on a good year last year, but the team doesn't need to take NC State lightly. They have something to prove, and it starts on Thursday night.

My research gives us that we are 16-3 against Dook since

OBS left there in 1989. He was 1-2 against us at Dook.
