Time is on display, all right. At pretty much all levels.

College is the only one where I think the scoreboard is gospel.
Even in HS soccer (at least in the upstate) they stop the scoreboard clock with 2 minutes left and the ref handles it from there.
Otherwise it's on display in the pros but the official time is kept by the referee.

I mean, let's look at it a few ways:
In soccer (use professional as an example), they play a 90 minute game (2 45 minute halves) PLUS extra time. Extra time is somewhat subjective and is only awarded by the referee. Net, you know darn good and well that if a game kicks off at 1:00 there are 5 minutes until halftime...UNLESS they add an extra minute or two or 4. Halftime is 10 minutes. So a 1:00 game will finish 100 minutes later plus a few extra minutes....or 2:40 and some change.
In other sports that actually keep time, yes the official time is posted. Well I think in football the play clock on display is not official, but I'm not 100 on that. So the official time is posted and that's good...but you don't know if a 1:00 game will be over at 3:50, 4:30, or 5:00 for that matter.
Good and bad with both I reckon.
