Kinda funny isn't it? LJD, by all accounts, is a good

Sep 12, 2021, 5:31 PM

member of the team for three years and was loyal to the program and didn't transfer when he easily could have.

But CJ comes in as a brand new position coach and all of a sudden LJD is Mike Bellamy. Bulllsheet.

Dabo and Elliott have both made comments that the issue is between CJ and LJD, and they have CJ's back, but Dixon's playing time is CJ's call.

If you're brand new to coaching, in a "friend of Dabo" position that you haven't earned, you'd think you might have enough discretion to not get into a pisssing contest with the best player at the position you coach. This whole offensive coaching staff is a world class shidshow.

is in the doghouse; but he gets the start, which would seem to indicate he's NOT in the doghouse. In the first series, right off the bat, he makes two really good runs (one for 16 yards), then gets yanked. Okay, we have a lot of great RBs in a neck and neck battle, so this is just part of the planned rotation, as both Pace and Shipley get in on that first drive. No big deal. But then we don't see LJD until the 3rd quarter, as apparently he was back in the doghouse. When he does come back in he lights it up pretty good again. Then we hear that he "needs to grow up". I trust Dabo 100%, but this is a real head-scratcher. It's just hard to figure how LJD goes in and out of the doghouse multiple times within the course of a game, and what he's doing to get put in there as we see nothing obvious.

Ball on the ground???

Sep 12, 2021, 11:20 PM

He has one….ONE fumble in his entire Clemson career—-over 200 carries. He’s averaged 6.6 yards a carry. He would have video game numbers (prior to being in CJ’s doghouse) if he hadn’t been behind the best back in Clemson history every year he’s played.

We can debate the “what’s the deal with CJ” stuff because we don’t know. If you start trying to justify him not playing for reasons related to his football ability, you’re heading for the deep end of the “don’t knowshit about football” pool.

One fumble lost in a game. Not the only time he's put the ball on the ground. And maybe there's something going on in practice we don't know.

I'm not taking away from LJD's ability or even arguing he shouldn't start. I was frustrated with his lack of playing time against UGA.

You think maybe you're jumping the gun a little here on our coaching staff and CJ? Be patient and give em time. They have a track record of figuring #### out.

If something like this was coming from one of Brent's position coaches, I fully admit I'd feel better about it being well in hand.

CJ's probably getting some guilt by association with me, but I've also been a big fan of LJD his whole time here and I think he deserves the same benefit of the doubt that CJ seems to be getting. I respect that we never ever heard him gripe about playing time, at least not publicly, while he was backing Etienne, and I respect that he never transferred from Clemson when he probably could have and frankly had better draft stock elsewhere than he does here at the moment. I imagine it involved him getting the council of our coaches on his decisions, and getting some assurances along the way, and IMHO, there'd better dammm well be a blazing three alarm personal problem dumpster fire (that I've seen and heard nothing of still) to put him in playing time Siberia and label him an immature problem teammate in the year he's trying to make his future money.

Emotional attachment to a school shouldn’t have any bearing on the analysis of coaching decisions, but it does it seems. Also, yes, with NIL the law of the land, we can now solidly discuss CFB as a business. And yes, LJD is a fantastic running back—-potential top 10 in Clemson history, but we may never know for sure. Sep 12, 2021, 7:57 PM [ in reply to College football is funny sometimes. ]

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’ve read two quotes on it.

Sep 12, 2021, 8:50 PM

Comments from Dabo and Elliott. Both imply that Spiller isn’t getting along with him and Vice versa.

Both coaches go out of their way to point out it’s CJ’s call.

Sorry de, CJ’s experience as a coach is woefully deficient to be coming in and having tiffs with starters and having the juice to bench them. I can’t defend that.

If it were something major that Dabo and Tony would have sat him for too, they would have said so and I’d feel a good bit better about the penalty matching the offense. They would have added none of this “CJ’s call” qualification—they’re barely supplying air cover.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"No juice to bench them" is literally his job as coach

Sep 12, 2021, 9:09 PM

I'm not gonna disagree with you that Spiller has yet to prove himself as a coach, but he has been named coach by Dabo so he has every right to bench/start any player he chooses (assuming Dabo gives him this power, which he clearly has).

I don't know what transpired between Spiller and Dixon, and I haven't heard anyone with that knowledge speak up. Maybe you have and so you are speaking from a more informed position. If so, then I'll concede to your opinion.

However, if you only know what you've read in two quotes and guessing at what the situation is then I'd argue we probably should just let it play out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We’ll let it play out because there’s no other option.

Sep 12, 2021, 9:33 PM

If you are given one single personnel change to make though that could or should win the UGA game, I bet the majority of responses would say starting LJD and leaving him in there. I just hope this is some life changing stuff for LJD and not just CJ feeling disrespected by being late for a meeting or a little back talk.

The potential game winning decision was put in the hands of someone with (as of that game) literally no high-level coaching experience—-there is no other business in the world I can think of worth hundreds of millions of dollars that would put that much power in someone’s hands that untested. My trust with Dabo is that it will hopefully be a mercifully short leash if needed.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Fair points...

Sep 12, 2021, 9:46 PM

But from what I heard and read, most would argue Scott and Caldwell were more to blame for the loss to UGA (and I'm not saying I agree or disagree with this, but it's certainly where most are upset). But I get your point, and it's fair, but I think you're rushing to condemn Spiller. It's his job to make those types of decisions and if Dabo disagrees with it, he could overturn the decision. And I do think it's funny your entire last paragraph could have equally applied to Dabo when he was hired as head coach, speaking to the idea of letting this play out.

I will say, I do understand your concern about Spiller's inexperience and I share it, too, to a degree. But when it comes to the subject of him being allowed to start/bench players, I think the position itself determines that power no matter who fills it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Fair points...

Sep 12, 2021, 11:26 PM

Agree completely about caldwell and I assume you mean Elliott—-I wish we were arguing about Scott.

No, what I’m saying is if you could make one move in that game, real-time,…one realistic personnel change, that could likely have won the game, what would it be. Coaches are useless for this exercise because you can’t swap a coach at game time.

I’d say two things…LJD majority of touches, and I’d entertain giving Phommachanh a chance at QB after DJU clearly struggling. Maybe moving Ross out of slot, but that’s all I’ve got.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

lol, yeah, Elliott. I have always confused their names...

Sep 13, 2021, 3:44 AM

My theory is that because their last names are used so often, and I know Tony Scott the (former) movie director that I just always combine the two in my head. That, or I'm an idiot.

There are lots of potential moves that could have been made and maybe they would have worked, or maybe they would have made things worse. That's fun internet conjecture, but I don't think you can positively say making any one move would have beat UGA.

But, I do think Dixon is our best RB or at least should be given the opportunity to lose that job since he's a senior and has earned that right. On the flip side, I also think the coaches have every right to start the players they want and feel have earned it in practice or gives the team the best chance at winning. And maybe that's still Dixon, but he just needs an attitude adjustment or maybe Spiller is overreacting, I have no idea what actually happened and that's kind of the overall point.

Hopefully, all this will be water under the bridge in a few weeks and Dixon is rushing for 150 yards a game.

Sep 12, 2021, 8:02 PM

After the UGA game, He knows that with DJU, he’s gonna need to lean hard on the running backs.
Shipley is great, but you need more than him.
And you don’t want to show your strengths early- only hope is to save an ace for the postseason.
So, get in LJD for a couple hits here and there per game. Otherwise, save him for later. Use whatever tools he has to stoke him up and get him motivated and primed for 9 games later.

Would you prefer the best RB gets 25 carries a game against SC State and the awful ACC slate?

greatest amateur/Olympic wrestler ever. Greatest college wrestling coach ever.
He wrestled at Iowa State, but coached at Iowa. that's why it was on Gameday.

as a general rule, great athletes can envision things and have that extra gear or "zone" that others do not have. And they cannot quite comprehend why this is, so their coaching talent falls short out of frustration.

If you notice, the best coaches were usually mediocre players or bench warmers.

Like I said, I appreciate what he did for Clemson as a RB

Sep 13, 2021, 12:22 PM [ in reply to Life gets in the way of me following Clemson football as ]

That’s as a RB. Until he shows me something other than life lesson-ing our best RB in the season opener for “immaturity” and I see some progression in our young RB’s over time, he’s a rookie coach with almost no coaching experience and a 10 on the wonderlic.

OOF that's funny

What is a good score on the Wonderlic?
While the average score on the Wonderlic is 20, the definition of what is a good score on the Wonderlic test varies. Often times, the quality of the score can be equated to the types of position or job an applicant or test taker is pursuing. Some average scores by job title go as such:

LJD is in CJ’s Spiller Time-OUT …… something heading into the leghumper game - late, something.

He doesn’t get in until the 4th Q - we kick a field goal on his first series, we seriously miss his directing & pointing out coverages, etc.

We get to the SC State game - he starts, he and CJ have made up — LJD does great, and comes off the field spouting like the Capri Sun slapping Chad Kelly - aka Sockless Wonderkind - about how he shoulda, woulda, coulda in the leghumper game.

He gets benched - deservedly - and everybody says he needs to GROW UP.

Find the video - this is what happened.

CJ & Dabo are right - Dabo as usual - and we move on - but HOPEFULLY WITH a more mature LJD.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

It's called CJ's ego winning out over common sense.

Sep 13, 2021, 10:27 PM

Latest article shows that CJ is apparently trying to "assert his dominance" in the RB room. He seems to have mistaken disciplining a kid at the detriment of the team because he didn't get bowed to with actually earning respect as a coach.
