I'd like to see some wheel routes

Aug 9, 2019, 9:37 PM

With all of our All-American receivers, imagine defenses having to worry about a wheel route on top of that. That would be a nightmare for defenses.

Can somebody translate what Elliott is saying about Lay?

Aug 9, 2019, 9:48 PM

I can't tell if he is happy or dissapointed with him. Seemed kinda' cryptic as to what he is trying to convey.

He likes him and he can do it all. It is all starting to slowdown for him and he isnt as overwhlemed as he was. He is settling in and he is well rounded.

He wasn't asked to block in H.S. which he is being asked to do now at CU. It's a lot to the position in CU's offense as the TE perhaps is 2nd to only the QB with what he has to do based on how the defense is lined up.(reading defenses).
At 6'6 260 he has the physical ability to move around and make the blocks. He knows how to catch already.
So, I think he was saying, "he has shown some good ability to block hit or miss but not consistently enough, and he catches the football well"! Just a matter of being acclimated to what he is asked to do now in the position opposed to how he was used in h.s.
As has been established by others - the TE in our system may not get his named called a bunch - but their versatility/mobility/strength/knowledge/speed is used on almost every play. The unsung hero in the system if you will.
Get in the playbook and more reps is what the doctor is ordering here and he will be just fine.

I hate to be so critical of a college freshman trying to pursue his dreams, but I was very excited about Lay's potential and thought he would not only replace Williams as the starting TE, but he'd be considerably better...Then I saw him play in the spring game, and was shocked by how bad was, it was hard to understand how he was even playing D1 football. I'm sure the coaching staff was hoping he would be able to affect the passing game in the same way Jordan Leggett had with Watson... A legitimate TE is the only thing this Clemson offense is lacking. I really cant even imagine how good TL and the offense would be if they had a TE they could rely on like Leggett, or Irv Smith Jr..

Trying to remember if TE coached Jamie Harper and Zac Brooks...those two had great hands.

If Mikey is better than those guys I see the wheel route making a big impact again.

Harper left after 2010 season I believe, so Elliott wouldn't have coached him (started in 2011 as I recall).

He would've had Zac Brooks though all 4 years.

Maybe Feaster wasn't "3rd string" afterall

Aug 10, 2019, 11:13 AM

Wonder if Dukes & Mellusi showed enough to push him down further...doubtful, but maybe???????

The coaches may never say it but it sounds more and more that way.
