May 1st Recruiting Update and Notes

May 1, 2017, 7:06 AM

All-state LB Payton Wilson (6-4 225) of Hillsborough, NC is expected to announce his college decision today around noon and his top four include Clemson, North Carolina, Ohio State and Virginia Tech. Last season as a junior, Wilson tallied over 120 tackles (including 39 for a loss), 13 sacks and an interception. Regardless of his announcement, some believe it may not be set in stone. "It would be surprising if Wilson doesn't take more visits after his commitment so recruitment won't necessarily be over." Adam Friedman, Rivals Sports

Here's where our boys are headed to in the pro's;
WR Mike Williams- Chargers (7)
QB Deshaun Watson- Texans (12)
CB Cordrea Tankersley- Dolphins (97)
RB Wayne Gallman- Giants (140)
DT Carlos Watkins- Texans (142)
TE Jordan Leggett- Jets (150)
WR Artavis Scott- Chargers (undrafted)
LB Ben Boulware- Panthers (undrafted)
S Jadar Johnson- Giants (undrafted)
QB Nick Schuessler- Steelers (undrafted)
OL Jay Guillermo- offered a tryout with Titans

Clemson commit makes a big splash at local camp
Regardless of what position he plays at Clemson, Derion Kendrick is a baller! Give him some time to learn specifics under Jeff Scott or Mike Reed and watch out folks, cause he's a good one. Enjoy this quick clip;
Link: https://twitter.com/PaulStrelowTI/status/858781148004200449 2018 DE Micah Parsons latest
Tabbed as one of the tops at his position in his class, Micah Parsons attended the New Jersey Nike Opening last weekend and was invited to the finals which will take place this summer. The event will be a great opportunity to see Xavier Thomas and Parsons compete for top honors at their respected position. Parsons mentioned Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Miami and Nebraska as possible visit destinations before his senior year. He wants to use two official visits during the season, then take the final three official visits between December and February. He told Land of 10 a final college choice likely won’t occur until National Signing Day. Parsons has tallied 190 tackles — 47 for loss — and 32 sacks through his first two high school seasons, according to MaxPreps. Here's a quick clip of him;
Link: https://twitter.com/PaulStrelowTI/status/858783048036487169 WR Justyn Ross (6-3 195) of Phenix City, AL released his Top 11 and Clemson remains in the hunt. The elite prospect recently visited Clemson in April and noted it was one of his best visits to date. It appears Clemson has staying power for his services but in-state foes Auburn and Alabama will continue to lobby for his commitment. Ross is being heavily sought after from Auburn QB commit Joey Gatewood. His mother is currently deployed overseas and is awaiting her return to officially announce.

WR Brennan Eagles (6-3 210) of Houston, TX took to Twitter and released a revised Top 10 which included Clemson as a replacement for UCLA. Eagles, a US Army Bowl selection, visited Clemson in April and received an offer. He's still looking around but expect a decision on Signing Day.

Speaking of Texas receivers, Al'vonte Woodard (6-1 190) of Houston, TX has announced on Twitter that his Top Ten includes Clemson. Woodard currently does not hold a Clemson offer but it would be a huge offer he says. “I’m waiting on that Clemson offer,” Woodard said. "They like to air it out. They like to throw it deep and have big receivers like myself.” However, things have changed and Woodard told 247Sports just days ago that Texas, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Ole Miss and Clemson make up his current top five. Woodard caught 42 passes for 909 yards and 15 touchdowns on 21.6 yards per reception last season.

Keeping an eye on the camp series
Check out some clips of DE KJ Henry below. Imagine if he can put on the proper weight and keep this speed! Here's what they're saying:

"Henry was a no-brainer for the Five-Star Challenge and he confirmed that with his performance on Sunday. He has the length, explosiveness and technique to be an instant impact player in college and his athleticism will be a major asset for whichever college he chooses. Henry won reps with speed, hand techniques and counter-moves while maintaining his balance and finishing at the quarterback." -Adam Friedman, Rivals

Here is KJ Henry going one-on-one with former Clemson target Nana Asiedu. (Is it just me or does Asiedu look really thin)
Link: Other camp notes-
LB Teradja Mitchell is just as good as advertised according to all reports and film. It's easy to tell that he doesn't want to pull up from a tackle and would rather lay the lumber. Jake Venables has gotten big. Really big. The reports you read are correct because he doesn't even look like the same person. TE Jeremy Ruckert (6-5 230) of Lindenhurst, NY is probably the best at his position in this class. DE Micah Parsons is going to be a great one, for sure. There's a ton to like about his game and he'll be an immediate impact player.

Venables and Mitchell in action

https://twitter.com/ChadSimmons_/status/858701230834683904 Let the Harrison Bailey-hype begin. You'll get tired of hearing his name before to long as the 2020 QB prospect continues to build momentum but it is deserved. DB Derrik Allen has the size and all the tools to be a good athlete at the next level. Allen was giving Clemson a hard look but eventually gave a pledge to Notre Dame. DT Ricky Sandidge has soared up some of the rankings and his offer list continues to grow. Sandidge looks really sharp for his 6-5 290 frame.

2019 DB Trikweze Bridges (6-3 175) of Lanett, AL visited Clemson this Saturday. His recruitment is just now picking up but one should expect him to have a lengthy offer sheet soon. In addition to his 2A-leading 11 interceptions as a sophomore, Bridges had 90 total tackles, the third highest total for a defensive back in the class.

2018 OL Jackson Carman announced yesterday that he'll take all five visits and make a decision in December. In addition to Clemson and Ohio State, Carman mentioned Florida State, Wisconsin and USC as teams he may look into.

Other notes-
Big-time corner Isaiah Bolden (6-2 180) broke a verbal commit from FSU and has given Oregon his current nod. RB Jamal Elliott, who had taken visits to Clemson, committed to Oregon over the weekend. Elliott did not hold a Clemson offer. The Ducks also picked up 3 more four-star prospects over the weekend including one from OT Dawson Jaramillo (6-5 295).

Florida State landed a big commitment as CB Anthony Lytton (5-10 180) of Marlboro, MD gave the Noles a verbal commit. Lytton had previously visited Clemson and others. Lytton is the third ranked CB according to 247sports and is my sixth ranked corner in this class.

North Carolina landed a verbal from 6-2 in-state receiver Dyami Brown.

Southern Cal keeps rolling on the recruiting trail as they landed a huge commit from elite DT Tuli Letuligasenoa (6-2 295); who is the 13th ranked DT per 247sports but is 6th at his position in my ratings.

Former Clemson OT target Will Lawrence (6-4 285) of Memphis, TN has given a verbal to Virginia. This is a pretty good pickup for the Cavaliers as they also received a verbal from OT Joe Bissinger of Houston, TX.

With Lytton to FSU and Surtain almost Surtainly LSU bound...

I'm getting worried about our DB take?

What's the plan? I can see if we landed Justyn Ross then Derion could make a great DB.... hoping you can give some insight

Re: DB

May 1, 2017, 7:45 AM

I'd say it's wide open, honestly. We've got some wiggle room with uncertainty surrounding where we'll play Derion. And we've got LeAnthony Williams and AJ Terrell coming in this summer.

Listening to coach speak, it sounds as if they're expecting big things from Trayvon Mullen this year. It would also appear that we nailed it with K'Von Wallace. I personally think that Isaiah Simmons will mature into a great player as well.

We won't be in any significant trouble this year if we don't take one, IMO. Though it would be nice. I don't think we've seen the last of Anthony Cook in Clemson. Jalen Green is another from Texas that I could see still in play; among others. Additionally, we made CB Tre Douglas' Top 7 and he's from Eagles Landing Christian- same school as Chandler Reeves.

I think what we could see is our coaches evaluate people at CDS Camp this summer and then maybe make a move. But no hurry. We've handed out offers to some lofty recruits at that spot so we're in play with some elite prospects.

UPDATE- LB Payton Wilson gives a verbal to UNC

May 1, 2017, 12:11 PM

https://n.rivals.com/news/rivals250-lb-payton-wilson-picks-the-tar-heels

IN HIS OWN WORDS…

“It’s felt like home for the whole recruiting process and I just feel like it’s the place I can go and get some playing time,” Wilson said. “The future is bright for UNC and my recruiting class. I’m ready to go to UNC and see what we can do.

“Cayson Collins will be leaving when I’m coming in,” he said. “That’s an opportunity that’s open that I can work and fight for. Coach JP and coach Ekeler will make me the best player I can be.

“I feel like I can recruit other guys because that’s going to be my future team,” said Wilson. “I’m in touch with a lot of other guys UNC is recruiting. I feel like we could build this thing and have a great future.”

RIVALS’ REACTION

Wilson is a major addition to the North Carolina defense. He brings a level of athleticism and versatility to John Papuchis’ defense that North Carolina hasn’t had in a while. Being a local recruit, it’s incredibly important that the Tar Heels were able to get Wilson’s commitment. Look for him to push for playing time as a freshman and eventually be a multi-year starter in Chapel Hill.

Re: UPDATE- LB Payton Wilson gives a verbal to UNC

Makes sense for him. He can get early playing time at UNC. He's have to wait in line at Clemson. We've got so much talent at LB it's amazing.

If I had to crystal ball it

May 1, 2017, 8:24 PM

I guess I'd say were in it with pretty much everybody, just about. Wish I could say I'll be brief here but...

LB Teradja Mitchell is down to LSU, FSU and Ohio State. Everybody knows he loves FSU so it'll be interesting to see what pitch the other two make. Our chances... 5%.

I didn't mention CB Tre Douglas but we made his Top 7 and I think he's our if we want him. In last months update I brought up CB Kyler McMichael a bit and I'm still big on him and our chances. McMichael has the length and athleticism that our secondary has become accustomed to.

Back in March, we discussed big-time CB prospect Tyson Campbell and how there's a lot to like about his game. He's a shade over 6-2 and plays at power-house American Heritage HS. Campbell plays the run well for his position and he's great in the return game. Miami and Mark Richt are after him hard. Then again, so is everybody.

Most of us probably figured that Payton Wilson was a UNC lock. Schools will put some heat on him, for sure, but I don't think he'll deviate.

As far as 2019 linemen go, keep your eyes on Keiondre Jones and Chris Hinton Jr. Both are from Georgia so we'll have to battle the Dawgs but I like our chances. These two are some of the best in their class as of now. OL Jacob Lacey is another name to remember as he's been here twice so far.

DE Micah Parsons seems to really favor Ohio State now. Big time. However, he's got some buddies at Penn State that are hoping he re-commits. I'd say he's a 70% Buckeye lean now but his summer trip will be very telling. If we can just get him on campus.......

DE KJ Henry looks like he's our to lose. I realize he had a good time at UGA and said some good things but then again he always has a positive visit regardless of the school. He's ours unless something happens between now-and-then.

It's easy to find things to like about DE Azeez Ojulari on tape. He's super quick off the edge. Ojulari needs to put on some serious weight to play DE but I can easily see his stock rising soon. He'd be a great standup rusher or WILL LB.

It would appear that the Zamir White ship has all but sailed to UGA. I hate that but oh well. I'm probably bigger on Master Teague than other folks. Thinking he has a ton of upside and I really like his physicality.

WR Jordyn Adams- 50% UNC 50% Clemson as of now. Ohio State and Bama will try their best though. Folks can say what they want but I think the top two are us and UNC.

WR Justyn Ross- 40% Auburn 40% Bama 20% Clemson. We actually stand a pretty good chance here cause once momma get's back from overseas Dabo will get to work his magic.

WR Brennan Eagles- I genuinely believe that if we shift our focus on him then he could be ours. I'd say 40% Texas 20% Clemson 20% LSU 20% FSU. And I really believe the Noles could put the heat on him.

WR Al'vontae Woodard- If we offer and get him around the players and staff- he's ours. Simple as that. An offer would be a game changer. His recruitment is just getting started.

OL Jackson Carman- 60% Ohio State 40% Clemson. Buckeyes are gonna be hard to beat here.

If I could've taken just one TE from this class, I'd have to go with Jeremy Ruckert. There simply isn't a better receiving TE in this class, IMO. Don't be surprised if he makes a huge splash on the college scene. Still wanna see Ruckert against some equal competition though. DB Derrik Allen is badazz but he's already made his decision. DT Rick Sandidge is really good but we have expressed higher interest in others; like Darnell Jeffries and Alim McNeil. However, I would love to see us land Stephon Wynn and move him inside (PLEASE let that happen).

There's probably a better chance that I'll wake up with my head sewn to the floor than seeing Xavier Thomas, Derion Kendrick, Josh Belk or any of our current commits flipping. It's not going to happen, IMO. And all those people that were thinking that Jake Venables getting an offer was just a PR move, well those people are going to eat crow. His stock is way up and he's looking at the US Army Bowl now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If I had to crystal ball it

May 1, 2017, 9:41 PM

I still feel good about Carman. He did not commit to Ohio State on his visit. I would love to see us take Teague. What about Salyer and Hill? Ross and Eagles should be both takes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If I had to crystal ball it

May 2, 2017, 12:05 AM

I feel good about both Salyer and Hill but Georgia will be tough to beat for their services. Probably a better shot at Salyer. UGA has done a pretty good job about keeping their instate lineman at home. But we're absolutely in it.

And yes, it appears that Eagles and Ross are takes but I know nothing about their grades or anything like that. We've passed on folks for that reason before, you know (James Robinson).
