Massive trade is done (thought not official):
Jul 30, 2015, 2:26 PM
|
|
Dodgers get Alex Wood, Jose Peraza, Jim Johnson, Luis Avilan, Bronson Arroyo, Matt Latos, Mike Morse
Braves get Hector Olivera, Paco Rodriguez, Zack Bird, and a 2016 "competitive balance" draft pick (likely in the 20s)
Marlins get three minor league pitchers
The Dodgers are taking on all the money, including Latos and Morse salaries, and eating the Bronson Arroyo contract. (Remember the Braves got him when they bought Touki Toussaint from Arizona.) The Dodgers are also responsible for $28 million in signing bonus for Olivera, leaving the Braves just his salary to pay, which is $32.5 million over 6 years.

Crump is in talks with Ard to swap CaptCrash to The Bad Apple for a stick of Juicy Fruit gum. Taking that gum some cash and LL and trading them to FGF, for a free Ice Dream card at CFA.

Here's my reaction:

I think the Braves are selling high on Wood and Peraza. I think they have trepidation about Wood's durability and a low ceiling for Peraza, and I agree with that trepidation. The Braves think the value of those two players is going to go down, not up.
The concern is obviously whether Olivera will be sufficient return. (Also, don't undervalue that draft pick they got.) By all accounts, and the numbers bear it out, he can hit. Will he be an above average bat for the Braves over the next few years? If he's a .300 hitter with 15-20 homers and 30 doubles, which is a feasible projection for him, then this trade will be very favorable for Atlanta, I think. But he's 30 years old, and doesn't have a clean bill of health. If he's a bust, then the Braves will have wasted some young talent.

from Markakis, so yea I think they would be thrilled to have someone else on this team reach double digits in homers besides Freddie Freeman.
Dave O'Brien said the Braves are covering some of the cost of Arroyo

If you like what you have seen from their work so far, then maybe their evaluation should be treated with optimism.

Sounds like I'm in the minority but I think the Braves did well here in 3 ways:
1. The draft pick is very important to Hart. 2. The salary dump is important to the owners. Perhaps they can use it next year and/or 2017. 3. Olivera is a low risk/high reward piece.
I did like Wood but seems the Braves have roughly 631 young pitchers being groomed in the minors.
B+ trade for Braves.

as I've never been as high on Peraza as other fans. He's fast and can hit singles (but with a low OBP) but doesn't have a position currently. To me, his only value is trade bait and what we could get for him.
With Wood, he's a UGA boy who has pitched consistently well for the team (Teherán is neither of those and so fans don't like him as much even if his upside is better). But, with his history (one TJ surgery) and his funky delivery I'm not surprised the team chose to deal him instead of Teheran.
We knew at some point we were going to have to trade some of our pitching for a bat and that day has come, probably sooner than many thought. We went after Olivera hard this offseason and now have ended up getting him for cheaper (from a salary standpoint) than we offered originally. Yeah, he's old for a "rookie" but he has a proven track record of a high average guy with pop everywhere he's played so we are betting on that trend to continue.
Olivera's upside versus Wood (#3 starter) and Peraza (lead-off guy with low OBP) reads like a better deal than most are giving the Braves credit for. But you never know with trades...
I hope we get to see Olivera play this season (once he's healthy) and he plays at a high level so Braves fans will shut up. (Seriously, the Braves message boards are crazy negative right now)
note: you make a good point with the draft pick (I didn't know it was in the 20s, thought it was in the 30s) and the fact that Hart also got some of Arroyo's salary taken off the books makes this trade a pretty good one for the Braves.
