Martavis Bryant has done great for a rookie season but

Dec 29, 2014, 7:07 AM

When people say things like, "Martavis has really proved a lot of people wrong..." It makes me roll my eyes. To me , he hasn't proved hardly anybody wrong. As I recall, I always thought he had tons of talent . I've said it, coaches said it and other people here have said it. The problem wasn't his talent level but he just didn't have the work ethic here. Heck he even got drafted because his talent was obvious. But the steelers decided they could fix his dedication. Seems they were right. Maybe a little money enabled him to get his life together so he could do better. But talent was never the question.

seemed most, not all, but most were wanting him to improve

his draft status, stay the extra year, be the man with sammy moving on, then get paid 1st round moneys.

I agree. He's done extremely well but he could have grown and improved as a human being and player with dedication to education, to workout regimen and his performance level. Barring injury -that's the big worry I guess- he would have gained at least a couple of million sooner as a higher pick.

I think I generally agree with the money argument here, at least from a maximization of profits perspective. This is to say that he probably would be most likely to maximize his income by staying another year and locking in a higher rookie contract. Given that the average time in the NFL is only 3 years (don't know if this is different for WRs given probably lower injury rate), it makes sense to get what you can on that first contract, because there may not be another one. That said, by coming out a year early, he guaranteed that he would not risk the injury that could have occurred during his final year of college. I know the NCAA allows insurance policies for that sort of thing, but I'm not sure if he could have obtained coverage. So, overall he probably would have been better off staying out another year, but there were risks with that decision. Lots of people, especially those who have young children (like Martavis), are more risk averse and want to lock in a minimum amount of compensation. I can't fault him trying to guarantee a decent amount of money for him and his family, especially given all the uncertainty.
