Mark Packer on Kblut Show

Packer and Kornblut we're talking about there being no Men's Soccer in the SEC. This got me thinking about Clemson adding Softball and Gymnastics which are big in the SEC. I wondered when those sports began if Clemson could afford them. Now I wonder if there is more of a long range plan than I would have thought.

Could the wheels have been turning that far back? Hmm.

Then first you have to explain how adding lacrosse fits into this master plan.

That wouldn’t explain women’s LAX (which is getting its own stadium and SEC does not sponsor). Only the B1G sponsors mens soccer, WLAX, AND gymnastics.
ACC will begin sponsoring gymnastics once Clemson comes into the fold.
I posed a very similar question last week when we announced 19 new WLAX players.
Unfortunately it looks like the ACC *was* the long range plan. But hopefully our other offerings are also attractive and we do have something in the works. From a football standpoint, SEC is absolutely best fit. From a total athletics department standpoint, B1G could offer the same money and a home for all our sports.
Who the heck knows at this point

I mean no disrespect but I thought that was obvious considering the lack of ACC gymnastics competition. Softball is a little different as there is good competition in the ACC but more so in the SEC. The whole Title IX compliance reason was total BS from the beginning .. they didn't just all of a sudden decide they needed more women's sports. The SEC has been in play for the last three years, and when it is all said and done Clemson will be in the SEC. I will go a step further and say they will put in the notice before the 2023 season to play in 2025. My guess is Texas, Oklahoma, Clemson and maybe as many as three other teams were originally set to announce at the same time, but the Texas, Oklahoma story got leaked and they had to roll with it prematurely. The SEC did not intend to give the other conferences 4 years to plan their next move.

Football Baseball Track & Field Softball Gymnastics
Great in Golf
Far better in basketball than people give them credit for. Florida, Arkansas, Kentucky, have all won multiple national championships. Texas could be a powerhouse. Clemson would fit in well in the SEC in basketball.
Moving to the SEC helps Clemson and all of the sports above.
The only real downside is soccer and lacrosse. But we could easily play other schools in those two sports the way Notre Dame has been playing in the ACC. We could be an independent in lacrosse and soccer and play a phenomenal schedule against South Carolina, current ACC programs, and Big Ten programs. As well as other excellent soccer programs. Just because the SEC doesn’t have those two sports doesn’t mean it would hurt our program. What matters is going for national championships. I couldn’t care less about conference championships. But again, we could join whatever the ACC ends up being when this falls apart in those sports or the Big Ten or some combination thereof.
But we benefit way too much in every other sport by going to the SEC. It would help our recruiting, season-ticket sales, fundraising, national recognition, I mean there are no downsides. I couldn’t care less about lacrosse to be honest. And soccer could be figured out. You don’t sabotage everything else because of soccer. And the reality is the overwhelming majority of Clemson’s Fanbase could not care less about anything other than football. We think these things matter because we’re fanatics.
