Mackensie Alexander

Sep 2, 2014, 8:20 PM

I have not read anything about how Alexander played but from what I could tell, Georgia never (perhaps a few times I missed) threw to the WR he was covering...does anyone else know how he played? Again, from what I could see it sure seems like we got a lockdown corner in him, which would bode very well for the rest of the D moving forward, especially when we need to load the box and shut down one entire side of the field.

I thought the same thing until I watched again. He was active. Saw him with a couple tackles. The only time I saw his guy get a ball was on a 3rd & long (i think) and his receiver ran a 10 yd slant and got the ball and fell. Mac was closing, but a little too much space to make a move on the ball.

I did see him coming in on run support a few times...but from what you've said I'm going to take it as a #### good first game for our redshirt freshman, was just surprised there wasn't more discussion about how he played since he was highly touted, and more importantly, how badly we've needed stud CBs like him.

That was the only one I saw as well. Appeared to be in zone coverage. Mason's strength is hitting those quick timing routes. Mac got there about when the ball did and made a good tackle. If he can look up FSU's Green or at least slow him we have a really good shot at beating FSU.

I'll also add that he was on the side of the field when the defense broke down and Bennett was wide open along the sideline. I think in the second half. Without knowing the play call it is possible that he was covering the wrong man allowing Bennett to get free.

He played well, period. Look, UGAy ran the ball really well against us. They're a 'one trick' pony. Don't think Scar and co. Haven't looked at the film... If Mason can't throw the ball down the field, (which he can't) SEC teams will load the box... Stop the puppies. We were the guinea pigs. Their's a formula to beat UGAy, load the box and stop the run. Simple really

If it's the play I think you're referring to then he wasn't

covering the wrong receiver. He had the flat (RB was heading that way if I remember correctly).

If it was the play where Bennett caught one down the sideline and got his foot down, then Bennett wasn't his guy - safety rolled over to cover that zone vacated by Mac.

Gotcha. I wasn't sure who was responsible for the coverage. I guess it was just great recognition by Mason before the safety rolled over. So not a busted play at all.
