Some people are so smart, that they're real dumb

May 10, 2021, 2:03 PM

A buddy of mine works in the same field (stormwater/hydraulics) as I do at a different firm thats right down the road from me. Apparently they are interviewing for either summer interns or full time positions, so they had a rising Senior from NC State in to interview. The kid knocked the interview out of the park. Great resume, good personality, good previous job experience. So the interviewer asked him a final question before the interview ended. The interviewer asked, "what makes you want to be a hydraulics engineer?"

The kid deadass responds: "Well, my grandfather was a hydraulics engineer during world war two and worked in the mechanical room of a ship in the Pacific"

At this point in his degree program, he would have taken the civil engineering version of hydraulics. This class deals with open and closed systems including, but not limited to, viscous flow, laminar flow, open channel flow, and Bernoullis equation. Civil Hydraulics, also called fluids, is in no way, shape, or form related to mechanical or hydraulic pumps, which his grandfather was more than likely doing during his time in the mechanical room of whatever ship he was stationed on.

but that is better than my final question with LandDesign. I'm not sure what the question was, but it was at the Madren Center at Clemson and when he asked if I had anymore questions, I asked about the open bar at the conference he was there attending. I never heard back from them.

during my interview, "do you have any experience with MicroStation?"

My response: "Absolutely. In my surveying class, we used a total station almost every day"
