Humbly report sir, Steve Spurrier analagous to Donald Trump

Oct 27, 2016, 8:04 AM

Steve Spurrier came to the University of South Carolina much heralded and the hope of the downtrodden throughout the redneck base of Gamecock Nation. He left Columbia with the program in shambles, and the program essentially destroyed for many years, due to his narcissism and ego.

Donald Trump came to the Republican primaries much heralded and the hope of the downtrodden throughout the redneck base of the Grand Old Party. He left the Republican Party in a shambles, and the Party essentially destroyed for many years, due to his narcissism and ego.

I regret that I have but one TU to give this post.

Oct 27, 2016, 8:55 AM

In addendum, his fanbase has engaged in irrational idol worship where they see their deity as an infallible being that can do no wrong. They will lash out at anyone who criticizes their savior, even when the criticism is blatantly warranted.

Likely, they will feel the same hangover effects and emotional letdown when they realize he is all too human--just like the Gamecock fans are learning now.

Eh, the dems seem to be ok after doing the same for Obama for 8 years.

Obama certainly isn't what I would call a good president.

Oct 27, 2016, 9:29 AM

But he certainly hasn't been the trainwreck everyone predicted. And the Democratic Party seems poised to dominate for a while thanks to this Trump disaster.

Agree to disagree.

Oct 27, 2016, 9:43 AM

I WILL agree that Obama is more popular than I expected. I personally think his presidency has been a complete disaster, but I will never convince anyone of that who doesn't already see it.

I just don't see Trump having a long term impact. We shall see.

Perhaps we haven't fully seen the damage of his admin yet.

Oct 27, 2016, 10:00 AM

Similar to Bush, which was one of the most damaging presidencies in our history. We knew it was bad but things got even worse afterwards. I'm guessing some of the problems from Obama will surface in the next few years (already seems to be hinting that way with the latest Obamacare news).

That wasn't really the point of your post and my reply

Oct 27, 2016, 9:53 AM [ in reply to Obama certainly isn't what I would call a good president. ]

though. The point was that Trump and his hard-core base were giant cult of personality (and I don't entirely disagree), and that's exactly what I've been saying about Obama and his hard-core base for 8 years. He's an empty suit, which Trump appears to be as well. One just happens to have a veritable PHD in politics, and the other doesn't.

Whether the GOP is destroyed for many years

Oct 27, 2016, 8:58 AM

remains to be seen. Perhaps he's the Tommy West of the GOP...the reactionary pick based on what the base thought it wanted. Maybe the GOP will go to a stabilizing candidate next, like a Bowden, and then hit it out of the park after that, a la Dabo.

These things can turn on a single candidate.

I constantly read on here from the liberal posters about how the GOP is a dinosaur that will never win a national election. In the meantime, they control the house, senate and governorships. They have nominated one of the least qualified candidates in the history of the country...a candidate that many Republican leaders actively campaign against...a candidate that has had the complete ire of the media against him...yet polls come out even today that show the race a dead heat (La Times...I realize that some show Clinton as much as 7 points ahead). It is just an opinion and there's no point in debating it, but I am confident that ANY of the career politicians would have beaten Clinton. The GOP picked the ONE candidate that she could beat, in my opinion.

If you put stock in wikileaks, the Dems picked the one

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't understand. Are there Wikileaks emails

indicating that the Democrats conspired to get Trump the GOP nomination?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Before he was running? That is odd.

Oct 27, 2016, 9:08 AM

Although I heard a political operative interviewed the other day on Glenn Beck (no...to nip this in the bud, I am not a regular listener of his show...I have probably listened to a total of 60 minutes this year and most of what he says is amusingly nuts) who said that he was approached by Trump almost right after the 2012 election about Trump possibly running. So maybe people in the know knew this was coming for years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I think Hillary will be a one term president

Oct 27, 2016, 9:23 AM

Exactly. You would have to be a Kool-Aid drinking Democrat to see their primary come down to a 69 year old corrupt empty suit and a 75 year old socialist and think "things are great in the Democratic Party".

Re: I think Hillary will be a one term president

Oct 27, 2016, 9:30 AM

I think the Dems are damaged due to Hillary. Repubs will have to find way to have a more inclusive candidate. Trump did reach out though eventually after insulting so many at first, and that was a start, but look who loves him generally. The demographics are going to continually move in the Dems favor if not. JMO Either way, the country isn't satisfied obviously.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oct 27, 2016, 9:41 AM

Demographic trends of Trump supporters, since I would like to never see a candidate like him again.

The country is more conservative than the democrats will admit. There is absolutely an avenue where a conservative candidate can win. They would have won this year.

Trump is a populist and a nationalist, not a conservative.

Oct 27, 2016, 10:44 AM

It's moderate. That's part of the reason why the masses aren't satisfied. Neither side is relating properly. That said, if the country was so conservative as you would hope, Obama wouldn't have had such an easy time in both elections. Hillary would have no shot. She will likely win.

Don't necessarily disagree, but when? This year was ripe for the picking----Trump wasn't forced on Pubs, the electorate freaking chose him. If this is the base's skill level in picking candidates, where do you get hope that they'll choose wisely next time?

Exxxxactly. Cruz was the candidate that all the fed-up people who voted for Trump SHOULD have voted for. The Illuminati...I mean "Establishment"...hates him more than they do Trump.

Everytime Graham knocked on Cruz...mocked him in public...he made it more possible for Trump to be the candidate. A man he will not endorse. Good job, Lindsey.

Absolutely he would have, in my opinion. And certainly he

I believe we will see Kasich again in 2020. In the meantime, he's got to take care of his citizens in Ohio AND find more opportunities to improve his national credentials (i.e., foreign policy).

Of course, all this talk of 2020 is assuming Clinton wins.

That, and people are mad and reacting to that anger. Many Trump supporters, just my opinion, will not want to buy a ticket for another year of defending an idiot like this guy...they just won't admit it publicly.

Also, the other candidates underestimated both the public's anger and Trump's staying power. They PROBABLY assumed that a guy that makes insults like an eight year old wouldn't last, and they weren't ready for it. I would not expect the same thing in 2020.
