Clemson's new architectural building in Charleston...Booooo!

The link above shows the design of a proposed Clemson University Architecture Design Center located at the corner of Meeting and George Streets.
I am not a fan at all of this design. One of the things that make Charleston so special is the huge presence of older building that were saved. When the rest of the country was bulldozing downtowns to make room for new buildings Charleston did not. At first it was due to lack of money, then Historic Preservation took root and the result is one of the neatest downtowns in the country. Clemson should over ride the architects choosen for this project and demand a style more in line with the surrounding buildings. This new building is an eye sore!!!

I agree... even if they didn't keep it completely in line

with historical architectures, that building at least needs to be a bit more angular and allow the surrounding area to compliment it.
It looks like someone had design-turrets on Meeting St. and that's putting it gently

I can't imagine the city approves that design. All buildings

in downtown Charleston have to be approved (at least they used to). You used to even have to get approved to PAINT your building.
Of course, they did allow that modern BP station at the corner of Calhoun & Meeting.... so who knows!

Horrendous... My Dad (class of 65), who is an architect, would croak if he saw that garbage.
Ill send him a link to that article.

There is a way to introduce ideas in a new building while still keeping in tune with the surroundings.

but the houses in your signature link don't "keep in tune with the surroundings." They look very 21st century.
Part of what makes old architecture so appealing is its age and its reflection of a time period. Well...we're in a new time period, and this building reflects that society.
Making something look old when it clearly is not just comes across as cheap and fake.

That rendering is from my boss's office in the nice old Washington Light Infantry Building.
The building at the present Clemson site is nothing special and is across meeting street from the old C of C Gym.
I would have liked a local architect and a better design - but all architects want to be famous, cutting edge "Frank Loyd Wrights".

How long have these folks been fighting about this??? I remember reading something regarding this issue several years ago.....I understand the desire to preserve downtown's heritage and charm, but I've also been made aware the Historical Review Board can behave like homeowners association nazis from time to time.
I have no dog in the fight and don't care one way or another, but it seems to me this should've been resolved a while back

This is obviously a low budget building, looks like a bunch of metal and glass modular homes stacked together.

Have you been to charleston lately?
Oct 8, 2012, 10:19 PM
|
|
The area in question is so full of modern architecture from big business and hotels you would look cheap if you went back to the designs of the 50's. charleston's old town feel is alive and well but it by no means stetches the length of the peninsula.

I like it. Why build new stuff that looks old?
Oct 8, 2012, 11:01 PM
|

If the building is actually from the 18th or 19th century, sure, keep it classic and don't renovate it. If it's a new building, do what you have to do to keep up with the times.
Ion in Mt. Pleasant looks ridiculous with its feaux 19th century style with 21st century building practices.

With the greenery coming up the side in the rendering,

I wonder if in 30 years the whole thing wouldn't be somewhat draped in vegetation and other growth. If the interior space works well for its purpose, why not its spartan and flowing exterior.

The architect did a presentation on that at the beginning of the year. It was interesting to say the least.
The gist of it was that it was in his intention to keep it in line with the current style, but modernize it to an extent. That is where the height and width of the "sections" comes from. All of his other work was really funky too. Cool, but odd.
I'm not a big fan of it, but apparently the city received it pretty well when it was shown. I don't think it's approved yet but apparently it didn't meet much disapproval. I will say that he does a great job of selling the design when he presents it.
