What was your first vehicle? I posted something along these

17

Apr 21, 2023, 11:25 AM

lines awhile back. I actually had THREE "first" vehicles.

The FIRST first one was a 1953 Ford Country Squire Station Wagon that my dad bought for $25 (Really!), tossed me the keys, and said "Take this thing around the field roads, and learn to drive." I was not quite 12 years old at the time. "Three on the tree", and an old Y-Block 272 cubic inch V-8.

The first car I actually had licensed for the road was a 1955 Chevy 210 2-door post coupe that I pulled out of our car junkyard, transplanted a 1957 vintage 265 cubic inch V-8 into, and cobbled back together enough to drive to high school. Painted it Ford "Grabber Green". My older sister, who was a teacher at our high school at the time, dubbed it "The Green Bomb".

The first car that I actually BOUGHT brand new, was a throwaway piece of junk, a 1981 Ford Fairmont, that came with the same four cylinder engine that Pintos had. It could barely get out of its own way, and when I attempted to trade it in just three years later, the same Ford dealership I bought it from new, informed me that the book value was less than $100. It actually took another ownership or two, but I can without any shadow of a doubt now tell you, I will never own another Ford product, not if I have to pay for it.

How about you all, any good first car or truck stories?

but that was a pretty cool car for a 16 year old to drive. I only drove it a year or two before my dad took it and got me something else, so he could fully restore it.

True story you reminded me of ... 11th grader. 1977. Just turned 16. Drove two sisters (8th & 9th grade) and 10th grade hippie to school. Three cars deep at red light. Light turned green behind me. VW Bug and another junker accelerated hard from light behind me. They could not stop. I kept my foot on the brake. They both hit me hard. One behind the other. Bam. Then another push. Bam. Both cars were completely compressed to their broken front windshields. My '49 Chevy had not one dent. Not even a scratch on the bumper. They really built them strong in those days.

1970 Mercury Cougar - gold with black interior and black vinyl top. 351 Cleveland 3 speed automatic. My dad and I had a hard time getting the brake lights and sequencing taillights to work properly and now they have a kit you can install for that. I should have appreciated those days more. Most of the time I was a runner back to the tool box to get another tool.

Only problem was, it had two too many doors, and was the absolutely bone cheapest model they had. It did not even have a radio, the latest model car I have ever seen that still had a radio delete plate in the dash.

'67 Chevy Impala, bought for $200 in 1977, Transmission was a mess, the car bucked every time the automatic gears shifted. Ran out of gas often and remember pushing the car to the gas station during the late '70s oil embargo. Remember odd/even license plate days to get gas? Long lines and a long push to the pump.

Re: What was your first vehicle? I posted something along these

Like I mentioned in your previous post (Mount Trashmore of cars) my first car was a 1964 Ford Fairlane with the 289. My 2nd car was a tank, a 1968 Buick Electra 225 with enough room inside to throw a party. The next car I got was a 1972 Orange VW Beetle which I kept until 1983 and wish I still had it.

I bought my first new vehicle (for myself) in 1983. It was a Chevy C10 Pickup. I drove it all over the country, from SC to FL, to California, to Massachusetts, to IL and everywhere in between. It served me well for almost 13 years until I sold it.

I'm with you on the 1980+ Fords 76er. Never had any luck with them. I had a couple used Ford cars but never kept them long. I leased a Ford F250 to haul material when I was building a house. The property was divided by a small creek with the house on one side and pasture in the other side. Even though it was 4WD, it got stuck in the 6 inch deep, 10 ft wide creek during the dry season. A friend with a beat up old 1978 Chevy 4X4 had to pull me out. I sold the Ford before the lease was up and bought a Chevy Silverado and a Chevy is the only pickup I have owned since.

I've had my current Chevy truck 7 years and had no problems. And believe me, it gets a work out being a farm truck.

My father bought me a used '63 Ford Galaxy 2-door coupe in 1974 for $300 from the original owner. He still had the sticker from when it was new and it stickered for $2995 I believe. It had the 390 Thunderbird high-performance engine with Police Interceptor package, Holley 4 bbl and Hurst 4 speed shifter in the floor. I called it the tank as it felt like it was that heavy, but if you punched it, it was like a rocket ship (at least to a 16 yr old). Back then, people would come up to me and offer me $500 for it. I always said no. I wish that I still had that car.

It had “Johnson County Sheriff” painted on the side so we shot a coat of primer then we looked inside.

Me and my uncle tore the engine down, I’ll never forget that rumbling sound.

… at least that’s what I recall.

1978 VW Rabbit Champagne Edition. That car had severe water damage from leaking at the lower edge of the front windshield. Replaced the electrical system 3 times, which cost me more than the car. I ended up burning up the motor because I was stupid and replaced it with a Honda Civic. Drove the Honda past 250,000 miles until some Bozo pulling a U-haul made a right hand turn, from the left hand lane, in the rain with no turn signal. Totaled my Honda on the U-haul. Not one scratch on the Bozo’s truck.

1960 Chevy 2-door hard top. The thing was a tank and had fins like the Batmobile. Front & back seats were large playgrounds where many a date night ended in ecstasy. Great car but used a quart of oil at every fuel stop.

I had a 1967 Camaro convertible that I drove while a student at Clemson (1990-1993). My Roomate was friends with Ricky Jones (basketball). One night I drove to the “The Zoo” and broke my rule on drinking. My roommates were drunk so they couldn’t get my car back to our apartment but Ricky Jones and Dale Davis were hanging with us and Cliff had them on a non-alcohol diet. I agreed for them to drive me and the car home. There’s a lot of blur to my recollection but I distinctly remember the top being down, Ricky driving with Dale in the passenger seat (don’t know how they fit) and me in the back seat parading by TDs, etc. and people hooting and hollering.

Next morning I woke up in my bed and my Camaro was parked outside safe and sound.

76er® You have to give Ford Motor Company another shot sir! That was a long long time ago and the big 3 in the U.S. all had their issues during that period.

Which helped pave the way for the "invasion" because they had become(all of them not just Ford) too comfortable and seemed to have the mindset; "where else will they go"!

F-150 #1 for nearly 50 years before being dethrowned.

I say all that joking really because to answer the original question: My first vehicle was a 1988 Ford Tempo.

Got me where I wanted to go and was fairly good on gas. I never had an issue with it; went into the Marine Corps and my brother dogged it while I was overseas! That's another story.

Good question 76er!
