Want to stream ESPN3 to TV. What's everyone's experience

Aug 27, 2015, 6:06 AM

With Apple TV?

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Love Apple TV...

Aug 27, 2015, 6:40 AM

Whether it's Netflix, air streaming Amazon Prime from my wife's phone, the ESPN app, buying movies on iTunes, or watching tigerray's upload of Clemson victories, it's awesome stuff.

Apple TV works

Aug 27, 2015, 7:00 AM

Best for us.

I use miracast not for iPhone

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Chromecast is much cheaper...

Aug 27, 2015, 7:04 AM

But usually if someone is considering an apple product price isn't a consideration.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You can look around and find Apple TVs for 40 bucks.

Aug 27, 2015, 7:54 AM

So they're pretty much the same price.

Aug 27, 2015, 7:07 AM

Apple TV is great. However, there are pluses and minuses. We have an apple TV in one room and a Roku in another. Both are great for most apps including ESPN.

Apple TV allows you to mirror another MAC product to the screen so when things like the world cup were on FOX Sports and someone like me who cut the chord wants to watch we have to do so on the ipad app. There is no Fox Sports apple TV or Roku Channel. I could put it on the ipad and mirror to my screen on the television.

However, we also have SlingTV and the Apple TV does not have a Sling app. There is a rumor it may come in the future and there are also rumors Apple will start their own version of SlingTV but at this point you can't watch. We use the Roku when we want to watch shows on a SlingTV channel.

I'm TOO skeert to cut the cord. If I lose Disney my kids will turn on me. It will be the Lord of flies in my house.

Re: You're a brave man. .

Aug 27, 2015, 7:56 AM

I understand the hesitation.

However, I can honestly say in the 6+ months without cable I haven't missed a single show I wish I could have seen.

The basic SlingTV package costs $20 per month and there is no contract. It replaces 99% of all channels my household watches. It also includes the Disney Channel.

For an extra $5, you can add extra packages including the kid's extra package that includes Disney Jr., Disney XD, etc.

More importantly, basic SlingTV has ESPN and ESPN2. For $5 you can add a sports package and get SEC network, ESPNU, Universal sports, ESPNNEWS, and some others.

Add both extra packages and you are at $30 per month. The only downfall is you can only watch SlingTV on 1 device at a time so if the kinds want to watch Disney and you want to watch football in another room it won't allow you. At that point you would just have to send the kids outside.

Sling TV

Aug 27, 2015, 8:07 AM

Any way to get Nick Jr. on Sling TV? Otherwise it sounds great for the majority of sports options.

We cut the cord almost 2 years ago and haven't missed one second of it. There's plenty of kids shows and movies on Netflix to entertain my 3 year old. Plus tons of shows and movies for me and my wife.

Mirroring is the best feature.***

Apple TV is a 8/10.

Aug 27, 2015, 7:53 AM

Mainly because it works with my phone and computer. I wish it had a better interface, which I think the new one coming this fall will.

Chromecast!

Aug 27, 2015, 8:13 AM

I love chromecast. I've never tried apple because I hate all things apple, but the chromecast ESPN app casts very clearly and with no lag from any tablet or smartphone. From a laptop or desktop computer it's not so good because ESPN has not created a direct casting option from their website, and you must cast the tab. This gives herky jerk performance. But like I said great from the app on a tablet or smartphone and even better from an X-Box 360.

Re: Want to stream ESPN3 to TV. What's everyone's experience

Aug 27, 2015, 8:16 AM

I just use an HDMI cable from my laptop to the tv, or cast from my laptop to the Chromecast device on my tv - either way works for me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I just ran a HDMI cable from PC to TV

Aug 27, 2015, 8:19 AM

done.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I did that for a long time too.

Aug 27, 2015, 8:29 AM

It is an effective method, but a chromecast is only $35, and it gives you a clearer less herky jerk picture and is much more convenient. Not to mention you can still use your computer or device for other things while casting. I would recommend giving it a try.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

my pic looks dang near HD quality

Aug 27, 2015, 8:33 AM

no herks or jerks.

But thanks for the tip , maybe one day I'll try one of those.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No problem

Aug 27, 2015, 8:47 AM

If you only use your computer to watch tv rarely (like for the occasional Clemson game that you can't get on cable) then there's really no problem hooking the computer to the TV. I am a cord cutter myself, and because I cast virtually all of my TV, except for local antenna channels, it definitely makes things much easier for me.

Firestick TV. 40 bucks, although Vizio TVs are known to perform strangely when one is attached. I find that the old "turn if off and turn it back on again" generally suffices. But it has been known to just shut off at random intervals.

I'm a Prime member, and it seems to be geared towards that. I haven't explored beyond Netflix, Prime Instant Video & YouTube. If anyone has Firestick and could speak to the ESPN3 capabilities, wood be nice.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Summa cum laude. Magna cum laude. The radio’s too loudy.

I've gone away from all Apple products so I'm currently

Aug 27, 2015, 9:31 AM

looking into getting a Fire Stick. A couple of my friends highly recommended it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

WatchESPN App on Roku works great.

Aug 27, 2015, 10:00 AM

All ESPNs on one app but of course you need to have a TWC login. I "borrowed" a friends Dish Network login because it also allows watching the ESPN SEC network channel.

Never had a problem and the best part is that I can take the TV/ROKU out onto the screen porch for a gameday tailgate atmosphere.

GO Tigers!

I have a firestick. It's by far the best way I have seen. I also can mirror off my phone but that doesn't work quite as well.
