Fergot to share this for Chas. area joungers, but met some

frans on Friday at Edmund's Oast Brewing. Lots of young tail at EOB, and most of it was wearing mom jeans, and when did that shit become a thing again? Anyway, unrelated tangent.
Wandered over to the rooftop patio at Revelry, and parked on Nassau St. maybe half a block away. If you've been to Lewis, Home Team, etc., you know the sketchy yet-to-be-gentrified Section 8 apartments up and down Nassau. Never had any issues, but always on alert in that area. I left the other two guys, hopped in my car, drove around the block to get on 26. Get a text from my buddy still at Revelry, "CALL ME".
Called him immediately. He said maybe 1-2 minutes after I got in my car, some guy comes running around the corner maybe 50' from where I was parked and fires off 7-8 shots back into one of the apartment buildings. Other friend calls 911, and the bartenders were completely nonplussed. One of them was like "yeah, that happens every other night".
Anyway, TL;DR, I almost died on Friday. It could have easily been me. Both friends had to provide eyewitness accounts, so I'm glad I left when I did.

The college aged girls here are all wearing high-waisted straight leg or loose legged light wash jeans, and chunky white orthotic looking FILA sneakers or AF1's, I have to assume the Charleston crowd are the same. And crop tops, all crop tops.
Man, I'd walk for a mile through that section 8 housing on Nassau or the ones right behind Bay St Biergarten to get me a pound of that brisket or some Juan Luis nachos.
That town changed so much in the 10 years I was there. When I moved there and lived on Ashley Ave right next to Wickliffe, Fuel was as far north as you'd even dare to go on foot. Now from MUSC to King St and Calhoun to the Crosstown that entire area is full of like dudes on unicycles and other typical white AF stuff.

was a risk. And we did it regularly, and at all hours as dumb young visitors. A lot of what is now gentrified and upscale was filthy and dangerous after dark. Reuben Greenberg cleaned all that up and made Charleston the vacation destination it is now. The difference between 1980 and 1990 was like night and day.

Please God bring back low rise jeans.
Having come of age around Y2K, it's hard wired into my brain to be attracted to:
- low rise jeans - American Eagle thongs poking out the back - denim skirts - tie-front shirts - tube tops - velour track suits - spaghetti straps - stretchy ruched dresses

falling bullet. Around my buds house, his car will have these random dents just show up on his car. There is gun fire almost every night, especially around July 4th. He got a storage locker and cleaned out his one car garage so he could get his car inside.
I worry more about being in some situation like that and being shot from stray bullet/ricochet.
Glad you were not around. He need you here to entertain us and push us to be better smokers/grillers and bourbon drinkers.

None of us would have dared to walk around that area at night. Maybe not in the day time.
It's changed a lot but seems some of the old ways are still around here and there.
EDIT: Also, surprised Edmund's Oast didn't dig the bullets out of the wall, make some obscure dish with them, and then have the Charleston City Paper write a fluff piece on how it's the greatest, trendiest thing ever.

First week of my freshman year at CofC...this would have been 2007.
I got drunk on Everclear and got literally bounced out of the music farm after shittalking a bouncer.
I took a left on foot instead of a right when facing Meeting Street to try and get back to my dorm.. somehow, I wound up here:
https://www.google.com/maps/@32.8124054,-79.9503916,3a,75y,276.44h,83.27t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sbHZYReSj-PUFx1Ch95JzXA!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DbHZYReSj-PUFx1Ch95JzXA%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D106.34577%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192Google Maps Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.
It took my friends all night to find me. This was with a dead cell phone. I had a bottle thrown at me from a porch, and a shovel thrown at me from a moving truck. Talked to some crackheads. This was before ANY breweries or anything were up that way. I believe this was around the same time they ran a Gangs In America special on this particular area of the peninsula.
This was my first frizzle moment. I was too drunk to be concerned for my well-being.

It was actually up further than that. This was the parking lot where a random shovel came flying out of a car window and almost hit me. https://www.google.com/maps/@32.8124331,-79.9517725,3a,75y,207.61h,100.65t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1siLHzo7DfgxCFNJzGH0pgZg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192Google Maps Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.
When my friends show up, I was holding the shovel (flathead) for protection. They still joke about it to this day, referring to having a "look in my eye" when they pulled up.
