Looking for some golf advice

Aug 17, 2022, 7:11 PM

I could probably get this off of YouTube, but I figure we have some good golfers here on Tiger net. I’m just now getting back into playing after taking about 10-12 years off. I’m using the same clubs. My issue is I’ve lost 50 yards off my driver and 20 yards off my each of my irons. I haven’t physically declined at all, And in much better cardio shape than I was 10 years ago. my swing feels exact same as I did 10 years ago. I’ve been playing and going to the range frequently, and no matter what I can’t get another yard. Anybody have any idea how I can get those yards back? has this happened to anyone else?

I have no exact idea how you can get those back if all is the same physically, other than you're swing or grip has changed and you need to tweek that.

I hadn’t thought about getting my clubs re-gripped, the grips are a little old and starting to crumble a bit. Thanks for the idea

Kind of on the same subject, I was a golf caddie for a long time and I would get these guys just always thought they hit their 7 iron 160 or so and they were getting a little older...50's. Anyway, they didnt want to admit they were getting older, so when I knew they were 160 out and they thought they hit their 7iron 160. I would tell them it was 170 and they would go 6 iron. They would act like they were right on it. If youre in the same shape, its probably your stance, swing, how you address the ball,(too close to the ball, too far from the ball), or grip. Something in that mix.

Yeah thank you for the idea of standing to close the ball I may take about a quarter step back and see if that helps

I still hit my irons about the same distance as I did when I was 20 years younger (with me shooting the distance), but my driver not nearly as long. I don't know what it is. I am fighting a hook, so I have started to alter my swing and just don't feel like I am generating the power on my drives. As a matter of fact it feels like I hit every club in my bag the same distance when I am practicing on the range. Maybe I should enter the "one-club" championship!

Tie your left shoe in a double knot. Put your change in your left pocket. Turn your hat around backwards. Put a tee behind your left ear. Now, hit the ball up the fairway. Your ready.

I went through something very similar. I took 7 years off but when I decided to play again I decided to get new clubs and it helped me get much of my distance back maybe even gained some as well. I used to say it was the Indian not the arrow but technology does play a huge part in golf.

It ain’t the club head. In this era it’s the shaft. Get a pro and let him recommend the type of shaft you need

You could take two weeks off and then give up the game. Only kidding. Newer equipment that you are fitted with by your local golf shop will make a huge difference

Since we don't know your age, surely some yards can be because of age. I know as I got older, my hips and shoulders do not rotate like before and I have lost yardage and have to hit about 2 clubs more than 10-15 years ago. Work on staying behind the ball and rotating through the shot with a body turn. Different balls might help because you do not need Pro V's or TP 5's.

Our swing speed and back swing decreases with age. Happened to me.

Re: Looking for some golf advice

Yeah good point it may be related to my back swing, I’m gonna get a pro to evaluate me because everything feels the same but I may not be rotating like I used to

That the fun part about golf

Aug 17, 2022, 9:40 PM

You dont need to hit your 7 iron farther, you just need to know how far it goes. The magic is in the short game. I’ve been schooled too many times by old timers who take it from inside 130.

If you really want to know, find a Golf Tek or local pro shop that trains with cameras and gives you a video review. Thats the best way to get into the weeds on mechanics.

10 - 12 years will cause you to have subtle changes (musculoskeletal) and a natural loss of distance. After my layoff, once the clubs were re-gripped and what I wanted, I played assuming my distances for each club would be the same. When it wasnt, I would swing harder/faster making some good shots and some bad shots. It was much more tiring and less fun.

Finally, I went to the driving range, slowed down my swing to where it felt comfortable, practiced enough to get the "new" club distances and went with it. I actually scored as good and most rounds better than I did before just by accepting a slower swing and adding a club or 2 to make up the distance. In the end, I was less tired and more relaxed when the round was over. Good luck.

If you are using 12 year old balls, that's your answer.

Aug 17, 2022, 10:14 PM

Get you some Callaway Chromesoft or other new "distance with soft feel" type ball.

Re: Looking for some golf advice

Yes. It happened to me. It happens to all of us. Father Time will eventually get you.

But, regardless of how old you are or how far you hit the ball now or how much yardage you have lost, the best advice I can give you is don't go out an invest a bunch of money in the newest and best clubs. Not yet. First thing you do is invest in lessons. Find a good teaching pro, can probably find one that will give you 30 minute lesson for $40 bucks or so. Spending $100 on lessons, and spending at least 4 times as much time on the driving range practicing what the pro taught you (at least 2 hours for every 30 minute lesson) will improve your game far more than a $400 driver and a $1200 set of irons.

Re: Looking for some golf advice

To answer your question you need to get some idea of your clubhead speed and your ball speed. If your ball speed isn’t at least 1.4 x clubhead speed with your driver, you are not efficient at delivering energy to the ball. I.e., your ball striking has suffered from time off. Get some lessons if this is the case. If the reverse is true, you need to increase clubhead speed. We all lose SOME clubhead speed with age. Dramatic drop offs usually occur after age 70 and greatly depend on physical condition and secondary conditions such as spinal arthritis. I am 59 and hit the ball as far as I did in my 30s, as I am more efficient at ball striking. Approach shots (irons to the green) usually IMPROVE with age, up until about age 70, due to more experience playing. There are numerous YouTube videos on increasing clubhead speed. I added 7mph over the winter just working out 3 days a week to increase clubhead speed.

As a rough rule of thumb 1mph of clubhead speed should equal about 2.3 yards of ball carry with a driver.

Get fitted for new clubs.

Aug 18, 2022, 7:30 AM

As previously said, you lose distance with age. A proper shaft fitted to your swing speed will insure that you have the "kick" to maximize distance. Use a lower compression ball. I hit Taylor Made Tour Response with 70 compression. It's very soft and has good spin around the greens. Finally, sharpen your short game. It's how I score anymore because I can no longer hit it out of my own shadow.

Work on stretching exercises to improve flex, drills to improve clubhead speed, take a couple of lessons with a golf pro that records your swing, they can point out any problems.

Lots of good advice here already. I second getting a swing evaluation fitting at a Club Champion, or a private company over a Dick's or Golf Galaxy unless you know for sure the fitter there is good. You don't have to buy new clubs yet either, it will just let you know what you need. With time on your side you can shop for new/gently used previous season models and save some money. Driver technology has definitely changed since you last played so I would start with that. A lot of the newer irons are "longer" because they jack the lofts up so your 7 iron is what used to be a 6 iron. Good luck and keep us posted!
