Looking for a Clemson tiger opinion

Nov 4, 2013, 7:36 PM

Was discussing this with a Clemson buddy (I'm a gamecock) who agreed. We were discussing the possibility of Mike Davis being a legitimate heisman contender next season if he finishes the season strong and improves even more statistically next season. What are your thoughts? Could very easily finish this season with 1500 yards or more. A side note, do y'all think he is more or less talented than his brother? Please keep insults out Bc they do not bother me in anyway. I just like talking football, even with rivals!

Nov 4, 2013, 7:39 PM

Mike Davis is a B+ running back

James Davis is a B- running back

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would say yes

Nov 4, 2013, 7:41 PM

Because Slurrier will leaning him with shaw leaving. Idk how your line will look next season and that will always be important to a RB. But a RB needs to have video game numbers in college with is hard to do for a between the tackle back so don't put money on it. Gurley will be back next year and he will still be the best in the SEC but dark horse candidate for Davis will be legitimate during the preseason.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Heisman is not bloody likely. But I think Mike Davis is

Nov 4, 2013, 7:43 PM

pretty similar to James. Hard to say which is better yet, but for a year or two James Davis was the best football player we had on our team.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

CJ and James never won its sooooo

Nov 5, 2013, 10:22 AM

yea... no...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's a good running back

Nov 4, 2013, 7:44 PM

But I don't think he's near Heisman quality when considering the competition. QB's just touch the ball so much and in this world of glamourous plays, RB's are boring. Also, he plays on a team with a chicken for a mascot, that's never won anything.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why do coots think all of their players are HEISMAN

Nov 4, 2013, 8:20 PM

candidates? GOSH! The State newspaper featured again this week - highlighting his pass block. ONE pass block in MSU game --- first on this season. OMG!?!?! Delusional fans and press (they are one in the same in Cootlumbia).

Re: Looking for a Clemson tiger opinion

Nov 4, 2013, 7:44 PM

He could be a contender but I don't think he'll be close enough next year. He's just now getting a reputation. He'd need a stud rep going into next year in order to be close to a QB. I do think he's better than James though!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Looking for a Clemson tiger opinion

Nov 4, 2013, 7:45 PM

I can agree with the Gurley comment, our p line will be even better I feel sure, not sure about Georgia's. My only thought on Gurley is will he have a qb that's a big enough threat to take attention off of him. If they are no threat to throw and teams can sell out to stop him, his stats could take a hit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

uh, shaw's gone too, right ? doesn't that comment you just

He's a coot remember?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You could say the same about Davis

Nov 4, 2013, 7:50 PM

Shaw is a huge part of the SCAR offense. Plus I have never seen Gurley look as bad as Davis did in the Missouri game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Looking for a Clemson tiger opinion

Nov 4, 2013, 7:54 PM

Gurley looked worse last year against South Carolina, Davis also had great receiving stats against mizzou to counter his 50ish yards rushing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Looking for a Clemson tiger opinion

Nov 4, 2013, 7:56 PM

And also, at least we already know Dylan can play, Georgia has no idea what they may have starting out next year at qb spot

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he looks like the best back you've had since Rogers

Nov 4, 2013, 7:56 PM

to me. Quicker than a healthy Lattimore and catches the ball so the NFL scouts are looking. I wonder why you're over here asking us but since you are i'll give you my honest take on the kid. He looks better than JD in some ways but he's got a way to go yet. Still suspicious to me that you came over here but you appear to be okay so i'll answer honestly. I despise the Chickens with every fiber in my body but from a football standpoint, the kid is the truth.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Looking for a Clemson tiger opinion

Nov 4, 2013, 7:58 PM

If by contender you mean in the top 5 then no. He could be on ESPN's watch list though which goes about 12 deep.

One of two things would have to happened imo for him to be a top Heisman candidate. SC would have to be in the top 10 virtually the whole season or he'd have to have near 2000 yards rushing. Outside of that, I just don't see it happening.

As far as comparing him to JD. He's a lot faster than JD imo and seems a little more shifty. It's ironic that he wears the number 28 because he seems almost like a mix between JD and CJ. A very good back no doubt.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Slurrier

Nov 4, 2013, 8:00 PM

Will run him into knee problems while trying to win a trophy for USuC

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mike Davis

Nov 4, 2013, 8:00 PM

Is a talent but he is not better than a healthy Lattimore. No way, no how. The Williams kid they have redshirting this year is suppose to be better than Davis. I would take James D over Mike D.

Re: Looking for a Clemson tiger opinion

Nov 4, 2013, 8:02 PM

To be honest I like to get other fans opinions Bc asking on our message boards you rarely get any negative, you get a more honest opinion from an opposing fan. Or at least from the ones willing to talk sensibly. Haha, don't worry I hate your tigers too but when my friends asked me stuff about let's say, cj, I told them honestly he was the most exciting player I had ever seen. Hated him but respected the hell out of his ability.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Looking for a Clemson tiger opinion

Nov 4, 2013, 8:05 PM

My only worry about David Williams is will he have the durability that mike has so far to take the hits, MD is a shock to me honestly. Didn't expect him to be able to get near 1500 yds like he's on track to get. His blocking skills and blitz recognition is what sets him apart from other backs we've had not named lattimore.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Remeber when quoting Missouri stats

Nov 4, 2013, 8:05 PM

Think of the first 3 quarters as your 2014 offense and the 4th quarter as your 2013 offense. Those receiving yards that salvaged his day all came with shaw in the game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Looking for a Clemson tiger opinion

Nov 4, 2013, 8:08 PM

Well think of the post first drive stats against UCF as our 2014 offense as well if you take that route. Gotta look at all games DT played in.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

James split carriers with CJ

Nov 4, 2013, 8:09 PM

I think if James got the number of carries per game that Mike gets, then James would have put up just as impressive stats. I think James was a bit stronger than Mike, but Mike is faster and shifter. They're 2 different RBs and 2 great ones, but if have to take JD over MD.

2024 student level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can the coots keep him out of Five Points? Doubt it.

Nov 4, 2013, 8:10 PM

Williams could play a good bit next year and steal carries and yards from Davis. Im ok with Carolina fans coming over and talking football as long as they are reasonable. Point for you for being respectable. Apologies to Orngpurple, I just realized I misread your post. I thought you said better than Lattimore but you said quicker.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Looking for a Clemson tiger opinion

Nov 4, 2013, 8:10 PM

I don't think Davis is a contender for the Heisman. Too many other great players. James had to split a lot of time with CJ Spiller so I'm not sure we ever saw how good James could have been. We got glimpses of his talent.

It's hard to compare. But I think James was pretty tough - a lot of runs with him dragging defenders for yards and yards. Not sure Mike is there yet. But I don't know. I don't really watch USC play.

Mike benefits by being the featured back and getting the carries. Plus this year he hasn't had to face LSU, Alabama, Auburn, or Texas A&M. Georgia's defense was young and he had a good game. Got stopped by Vandy and Mizzou.

I think that Clemson will be the best front 7 he faces this year. So, we'll see on Nov 30th.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Looking for a Clemson tiger opinion

Nov 4, 2013, 8:13 PM

Clemson maybe the best front 7 he faces, mizzou definitely gives Clemson a run for their money though. They are as good as advertised.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dude, if you hated CJ Spiller

Nov 4, 2013, 8:19 PM

you have issues. He is one of the best people on the planet. Forget his football skills. He's just a class act and first rate person. How can you hate a guy like that? Taking the rivalry a bit too far I guess....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If Mike Davis leads you guys to an undefeated season, he

Nov 4, 2013, 8:17 PM

would be a contender, but we both know that isn't ever happening, so instead he will be a good back on a good team, and maybe, if he doesn't make the bad decisions his brother made at the NFL level, he will have an NFL career.

We conferred and we all agree

Nov 4, 2013, 8:20 PM

You don't want your RB in the heisman conversation unless they are an Olympic level track star. You have to score so many points in CFB that if you have to do it over the course of a season with a betwen the tackle rb you either save him for the games you need to actually play hard to win or he will break.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nov 4, 2013, 8:20 PM

James split carries yes, but mike has 1058 yds on 166 attempts as of now. Comparing to James at 203 att 1187, 214 att 1064 and senior with 171 att for 751 he's technically getting more yards with less carries already. One stat i would like to know about JD is how many runs he had of 40yds or more to compare if anyone has that.

He is no better than his brother. He only has poorer judgement. James shared his carries with CJ Spiller who was at least as talented as either brother. MD is not a candidate as we speak, and doubtful spurlid will see it through to give him enough carries to get the stats needed for the national attention a Heisman candidate needs to get the votes. Also, I doubt MD will hold up physically to that level of performance, even if he got the opportunities.

Nov 4, 2013, 8:36 PM

...would a Georgia or Florida State opinion be any less interesting? To come on a Clemson board and seek praise for a Gamecock player seems, to me to be seeking controversy.

The fact that you received generally constructive response speaks well of the Clemson family in general. But I think it would behoove the argument to hear from folks with Gurley in their backfield ... or Winston as their QB.

Re: Looking for a Clemson tiger opinion

Nov 4, 2013, 9:02 PM

From what I've seen of Davis he appears to be a good RB that runs like he's chasing someone that stole his lunch money. That said, I don't know that your team will be good enough to keep a Heisman campaign running long enough to beat out a stud QB. This will be especially true if Winston doesn't win the Heisman this year.

I haven't really seen enough to say whether or not Mike D is better than James D. I do think that Mike D is going to play with a huge chip on his shoulder against us for not recruiting him like he wanted.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No legit shot at Heisman though he could get invited as

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Depends on a lot of things

Nov 4, 2013, 9:19 PM

No player is a Heisman candidate unless he plays on a good team. No telling what kind of team he will play for (or who will be coaching it next year). Lets assume for the moment that isn't a concern.

Next things have to work out right - no injuries, good schedule, TV exposure, big stats at the right time, etc.

Then you have to look at who the competition is - is Mariota still around? what's Winston doing? Etc?

To me regardless of how you stack it the Heisman is tough. In my mind Mike getting the Heisman would be a huge surprise; doesn't mean it won't happen but I wouldn't bet on it.

I've been pretty impressed with Mike's play but I can't say who is the better back between him and James because the system, carries, etc Let just agree you are happy you have Mike and we are happy we had James and leave it at that.
