Looking back on this season, I think the injury to Charone

Dec 9, 2013, 3:04 PM

Peake was a lot bigger deal than we all thought it was at the time. In the Georgia game he showed that he was truly the second threat behind Watkins. He really would have opened up the offense and give Chad a lot more confidence in calling certain plays in certain situations.

I'm usually not one to look back and say what could have been, but I just started think about the impact he could have had on our season.

Bryant is more than adequate as a Sammy backup

Dec 9, 2013, 3:07 PM

And Williams had some shining moments, too. Our problem may not be talent at WR but more our ability to make plays with them. In the really key games, Boyd spent a lot of time scoping for a receiver (FSU especially but SCar too) and ended up scrambling in a number of cases. It's really hard to tell with TV angles and shots, but I suspect our play calling wasn't creative enough or the receivers not creative enough at times to make a play under heavy zone coverage. Just a guess.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I disagree with tis to be honest

Dec 9, 2013, 3:10 PM

Bryant as the talent to be a good back up for Sammy but he's never achieved that level of production. Bryant is still not a great route runner, most of his big plays come from a Go route when he runs past the opposition. His blocking is hit or miss, whereas Sammy, Nuk and Humphries lay it all out in that regard. Bryant can be truly unstoppable if he puts everything together. He's not there yet. I think Peake was in a better position to be our No.2 behind Sammy then Bryant

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe he isn't great on route runs yet. He still managed

Dec 9, 2013, 3:26 PM

5 TDs on just 39 touches and over 20 yards average per. So his ability to run past his coverage, as you say, must be pretty darn good.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes but it doesn't make him a complete WR

Dec 9, 2013, 3:38 PM

He's athletic ability is without question off the charts hence his numbers. But consistency is huge and there are too many games where he doesn't show up mainly because his route running doesn't get him open. Sammy and Nuk could get themselves open because of their excellent knowledge of how to run their routes.

I thought you were commenting on "level of production"

Dec 9, 2013, 3:52 PM

I agree that Bryant isn't of the same caliber as Sammy at making plays, but instead relies on his athleticism to beat out coverage. But he is certainly productive.

Well, except in this last game where perhaps his lack of route running was a factor. How many times might he have been a target? Dunno. But he only touched it once. McDowell was more productive in the air.......

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

SC played a lot of two deep that game

Dec 9, 2013, 3:57 PM

They kept their safeties back to protect against the deep ball and as you see if that's taken away it really hurt Bryant's ability to impact a game. What Morris should have done is feed McDowell another 10+ times and continue to gash them on the ground SC was already sucking wind and the OBS would have been forced to stack the box and that would have opened up the pass. Morris, again, got away from the run for some unexplained reason and also the turnovers didn't help.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"Turnovers didn't help" = HUGE understatement.

Dec 9, 2013, 4:04 PM

14 carries and 2 passes was a fair amount of work for McDowell. I don't understand why they didn't try any other runner, too. If you're going to "experiment" with McCullough in the Citadel game for whatever reason, why not give him some carries in the SCar game? It would hurt the defense even more if you beat them out on the ground with multiple runners and not just McDowell and Boyd.

But the turnovers were proof to me that we were playing same game we get ourselves into when the competition is tough. They weren't isolated to early in the game, and they made all the difference in the momentum and psychology. Why we were able to play LSU and UGA back-to-back without wetting ourselves and then never again is a real mystery. I say never again in the context of a skilled and well-coached opponent.

No doubt.

Perhaps...

Dec 9, 2013, 3:38 PM [ in reply to Bryant is more than adequate as a Sammy backup ]

but it's just as likely we lost part of our playbook because no other knew the plays as well as he. Tajh knows as well as anyone who does and doesn't know exactly what they are supposed to do.

Another Bryant problem. Sometimes he just totally misses

Dec 9, 2013, 3:53 PM

the play call. It's more than not running the route. He sometimes just misses the call altogether.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wrong: Bryant is a ridiculously horrible waste of talent

Dec 9, 2013, 4:57 PM [ in reply to Bryant is more than adequate as a Sammy backup ]

Peake knew how to get open.

Re: Looking back on this season, I think the injury to Charone

Dec 9, 2013, 3:08 PM

I think it will help us next season and possibly the season after that. Boyd showed against SCar that even though he had other established weapons he reverted back to his comfort zone. Peake may have had success in most games but I don't think he would have been a huge factor against SCar and FSU was over after we botched play one.

That really took away the middle of the field imo

Dec 9, 2013, 3:08 PM

Jaron Brown and Peake are the ones we sent across the middle the most and that part of our game has been absent all year.

Dec 9, 2013, 3:12 PM

I agree , and after watching Auburn this season it took them a lot of games to get the Gus offence where it is today .

Morris has been limited with the backs we have and the ability of Tajh to run or make the right reads .

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's worse than you can imagine.

Dec 9, 2013, 3:36 PM

He knew the playbook. He was confident in knowing that the ball would be where it's supposed to be and he'd meet it there. Even some of our deep passes are based on timing.

It's also notable that he knew more than one position and certainly had more experience than all of our other WR except Sammy. Therefor, he was the second most valuable in two aspects.

The good is that he'll be back next season. I'm almost certain he would have gone high enough in the draft to have moved on.

Though I hate that he was hurt we're better off with him returning. He'll be a Senior and will be one of the leaders of our offense.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We'll have Peake and Williams to compete, so if Bryant

Dec 9, 2013, 3:55 PM

returns rather than go all the way to the draft, he will have to work his butt off to get the top slot. I'm sure he wants one of the starting slots in the worst way if he's back, too.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If I"m not mistaken, he got a medical RS and will be a JR.***

Turnovers were the story of our season.

Dec 9, 2013, 4:58 PM

Without them against FSU, we don't get killed. We lose a respectable game. Without HALF of them against SCAR, we may have won.
