Last year, we were preseason #4 despite finishing outside the top 10 the year prior. This was despite having no significant additions to our roster, plus new coordinators on both sides of the ball.
The only reason we were ranked so highly to start the season was because of our reputation. It wasn't based at all on the previous year or our actual personnel.

We were ranked highly because the experts had our defense ranked #1 pre-season. FSU is going to have a high ranking next year simply off recruiting and their strong finish to the season. I agree completely that reputation plays into it but that reputation is earned over years of consistently high-level performance so expectations are inherently higher for the better programs.

With that statement in mind . . . Duke with the exact same record against the exact same opponents WOULD BE RANKED HIGHER.
Is it Right? Is it Fair? That’s fodder for another discussion . . . Still not worth getting pizzed over . . . Go to Green River . . . Get a bucket of balls . . . and smash them as hard as you can . . . Don’t worry about where they go . . . Enjoy a few “cool ones” as you go . . . Your bp will go down and your smile will return . . . If you’re into scenery - take a skirt with you!!! . . . I know that will settle your nerves and take your mind off some arbitrary ranking . . . You deserve better!!!

Maybe there's some speculation - who knows ?
Maybe there's some hyperbole - not sure ?
Could even run into occasional conjecture & such . . . . it's CRAZY, I know.

They’d be ranked higher but primarily because they would have started ranked higher. That’s the built in fallacy of the poll system. But they have us 20th. The objective NET system has us 59th and that is exactly where Duke would be if they had the same schedule / results.

To be fair, when we scheduled SCAR, Iowa (and Cal in next round), Penn State, we didn't know that they would be so harmful to SOS (and that we'd lose to SCAR to boot). Loyola-Chicago had a run to the Final Four in 2021. Richmond won their first game in the NCAA tournament last year as a 12 seed and were the odds favorite to make the NCAA again in the A10.
Every team has over-powered opponents. Duke played Jacksonville, Delaware, and Maryland Eastern Shore, and also Clemson common opponents USC Upstate, Bellermine, and Iowa.

Duke would not have lost to teams like Loyola and South Carolina. Polls mean nothing, making the NCAA Tournament does. Voters have long memories and we have little history to fall back on.

Duke would likely have started the season ranked in the top 10 while Clemson...well...didn't.
Duke is also 8-0 against Quad 4 opponents while Clemson...well...isn't.

If Duke had the same schedule and record they would be in the top 5 because they get a pass because they are Duke ! You are correct MyfavOrange.
It sucks that Clemson is having a historic season but is getting little respect in the polls. IMO polls in today’s college athletics are not worth much or they are useless until some were about half way into the season. Teams are given top spots which they don’t deserve. And many of them finish either ranked from in the back in of the polls or they finish unranked.
Coaches and AP voters take a look at Clemsons record. 18-4 overall and 10-1 in ACC conference play. IMO these 2 polls are outdated. Computers could do a better job ranking teams more accurately and more fairly.
