Some of you obviously got your bachelor’s degree in whining.

Apr 16, 2021, 11:27 PM

Based on what I read here, Clemson has one of the finest whining departments in the country.

Whine about baseball, whine about basketball, whine about Radakovich, whine about the ACC, whine about the NCAA.

The only thing you don’t whine about is Dabo, and that’s only because we are elite. If we weren’t, you would whine about him too.

As worshipped as Danny Ford is here, I can’t imagine how much whining would’ve occurred here if TigerNet were around in the 80s. We were good for at least one ### loss most every year under Ford. That, plus a boring and unimaginative offense would’ve surely caused a stir here in Whineville.

Stop expecting Clemson to be elite at everything all the time. Other teams are trying really hard to be great too. Winning is hard. Winning big isn’t our birthright at Clemson. We get it, you’re macho and you think anyone who disagrees with you doesn’t want to win as much as you do. Blah blah.

Maybe one day you will let our coaches coach and our administrators administrate. It’s obviously okay to have an opinion, but all this whining isn’t helping anything. Goodness.

Monte Lee is still our coach. Brad Brownell is too. Deal with it. Just stop whining so much.

I don't think it is whining so much as searching for answers. I don't believe any school should just concede to under achieving... clearly there are issues with basketball and baseball. Right now we are not playing fundamentally sound in either one. You know that already. No one on here expects to win championships every year but they do expect our programs to compete to a level they can be proud of. That is not too much to ask. Outside of a few games baseball has been abysmal and that is not ok for a coach 6 years into his tenure. You mentioned Dabo.. he had Clemson's only losing season for awhile, but he made changes and has been competitive every year since.. Brownell has not made changes and continues to founder. Monte can win with baseball, but if you don't think criticism is warranted after watching our baseball team this year (especially the last four games) you don't know baseball.

Highly unlikely you will find answers on a message board. Especially a free on who takes all comers. Would be better to understand how sports work. For example, we have a good baseball team. It’s good but not really good nor great. Miami has a great team this year so why jump off the ledge when we go to their place and lose?

For realz. You get some of those results, there's gonna be some...recriminations. You do not invest a gazillion dollars in the shiniest of facilities to lose 13-6 to College of Charleston...or 12-2 to USC Upstate. At home.

I don't even follow baseball much, and I was like: wah?

Judge, the question you aren't answering is, "Why are we 'elite' in football?" The answer is, "Because we would not tolerate mediocrity. So a highly paid coach was fired and an inexperienced coach was given a chance to prove himself. He has and the rest is history. But you know as well as I do that Dabo wouldn't still be here is the mediocrity had continued. Why is that a bad way to run an athletics program in the United States of America? I don't see the problem. These coaches are well compensated. We aren't "marrying them," for heaven's sake. You pay lots of money in hopes that they make their particular sports team "elite" and do so within the rules and regulations specified. If they don't, you thank them for their service and move on. I would agree with your philosophy is Clemson were a mediocre school that paid mediocre salaries. That clearly is not the case. As such, I refuse to embrace the mantra of the liberal left that says everyone gets a participation trophy and no one gets their feelings hurt. In this free enterprise system, we pay for results. If we don't get them, we try another option. Why is that whining? Go Tigers!

Re: Some of you obviously got your bachelor’s degree in whining.

Apr 17, 2021, 11:21 AM

Excellent point. Circumstantial success, perhaps, but success nonetheless.

For example, would we be considered "elite" without national titles? Remember, we likely wouldn't have even played for a title without the birth of the CFP coming into play.

And with the league itself being so drastically uncompetitive for so long we likely don't control our own destiny to the playoff again this year. That's not fair for any team, but no team seems to be in that position any given year, let alone every year like we are here at Clemson.

Still, take those things away; without the playoff we'd likely still be considered successful, and if the league were as competitive the last 6 years as when Dabo took over, we'd still likely be a 9-win team each season or better so I don't think we'd have lost Dabo quite yet.

As a result, football's success has helped IPTAY absolutely surge, creating growth, new businesses, new properties, more students than ever, even entirely new programs like soccer.

It may be largely consequential, but it's a sincere benefit that we've handled well from the admin level, IMO (I know many don't love the growth at CU but I think it's critical).

This is a prettty bad take. What we did was hit the lottery with Dabo. If hiring a Dabo was easy, then everybody would do it.

Also it wasn’t just hiring Dabo. It was investing in the football program with the paw journey, one of the highest paid coaching staffs in the nation, and having the best facilities in the nation.

If we did that in basketball we would no doubt be a better program than what we have now.

unless we are losing. am I wrong? look at teams like ole miss, vandy, miss state, hell, even South Carolina. their fans are getting into it, and being rowdy. maybe if our fans would do the same then it would energize our players a bit. just watch one of those SEC games, the players feed off the crowd and they are out there having a blast. our guys are playing uptight, just waiting for something bad to happen.

now, with that being said, some changes do need to be made I believe. we have the talent, there is no questioning that. Im not saying fire monte lee, but if he wants to save himself he needs to make some tough decision with his staff this offseason.

Re: I don't see a single baseball post.

Apr 17, 2021, 10:59 AM

You aren’t paying much attention. There is more than one thread started about every single game we’ve played. Considering we’ve won 15 that’s 15 more winning games discussed than you’ve apparently seen a post for. And no, they aren’t all negative.

As for South Carolina fans getting into it - they are right now discussing how Tanner is killing the program by throwing out rowdy fans. It’s on Twitter and FGF and he’s directly addressed it with fans. So the grass isn’t always greener.

Lee has one year left on his contract. If he is even retained he won’t be getting an extension and no one who will make a difference is coming for one season with a lame duck head coach. Baseball, like basketball, is being hung out to dry.

Re: Some of you obviously got your bachelor’s degree in whining.

Apr 17, 2021, 8:38 AM

I will be the first to admit I get tired of hearing a fan base whine. We have to remember that Tigernet probably is not a true gauge of our “fan base” rather an outlet for some of the outspoken. There is nothing wrong with wanting to win and being disgruntled when you lose. Having said that I truly believe Clemson athletics should always be above .500 and finish in the top 25% of the conference. I know there is no real measuring stick but Clemson should win a lot more than they lose. If that reasoning makes me an elitist than so be it. I simply enjoy winning more than losing. As long as we keep our whining somewhat classy and not too personal I believe we should all be able to handle it. Go Tigers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In my view it’s not even close to being a toss up.

Apr 17, 2021, 10:50 AM

Whining on a sports board is far more tolerable than the insufferable arrogance you routinely bring to it.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Simple solution... you lose under 80% your salary gets cut..

Apr 17, 2021, 10:54 AM

By the amount of your losing %. You win zero, you get zero.

But this only kicks in once you lose more than 20% in a season.

Apr 17, 2021, 11:12 AM

To be fair, you're right, however we didn't used to be this way.

I think success is what actually made us adapt that "us against the world" cultural mentality. I think the lack of legitimate in-league competition & the timing of that didn't help us prepare for adversity properly as fans; Dabo himself, for example, has always been explicit about respecting other programs & their teams, so it's not a fault of Dabo's leadership. Culture is just something you can't control, sadly, even Dabo himself. I don't love the mentality, but I'm learning to do my best to deal with it and to use my voice more like Coach Swinney's. What else can I do, after all?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Some of you obviously got your bachelor’s degree in whining.

Apr 17, 2021, 11:23 AM

I think I needed to hear this today.

I'm a life-long Tiger fan. But I get "downvotes" here just for being new, or for not agreeing with everything all the time. Our culture has changed so much BECAUSE of the success, though; I sincerely don't think we whined or had an "us against the world" cultural mentality until the unprecedented success & coincidental opportunities from the playoff being created. I'm outrageously grateful for the playoff, Coach Swinney & Dan Radakovich.

But some could argue that that’s one of the reasons to have message boards. Just take the criticism and praise as part of normal fan response to sports news.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Right in some sense,

Apr 17, 2021, 11:53 AM

But it's not unique to Tigernet's boards, either, IMO.

I think it just means it's more important than ever to respond to things more the way Coach Swinney teaches us as one of the biggest the things we celebrate him for. Success may have changed us, but I struggle with the balance of fighting against the way the culture has changed. I'm not sure there's a good answer, but I don't think it's the fault of Tigernet or any other Clemson board or group, but I do think Tigernet largely represents the fans accurately, for better or worse. How can we change the cultre? Not sure, honestly. But I'm listening (I'm also relatively new here to the site & I'm still struggling to figure out how to move around, read & respond, etc.)

Last time I checked, a message board is where fans can voice their opinions and concerns of a program. You don’t have to agree with it.
And I think people have been on here frustrated with the things Dabo has done and hasn’t done.
