Lot of talk about offensive lineman committing elsewhere

Jun 18, 2018, 1:14 PM

We can’t have them all and in honesty why would a lineman not like what Georgia has to offer. They play pro-style offense with the best running backs money can buy, oops I mean recruit ??. While we operate a more open system with sideline to sideline style which takes blocking to a different scheme. While we do play smash mouth football at times, we get stuffed many times. It’s just not Clemson football, it’s angles and scheme more than run down your throat. Big OL love to decimate the DL and love smashing them down the field. Who can blame them honestly, especially with possible NFL in the future.

As much as I love Clemson and want the best players, I also see reality and that is Georgia offers a different option that the Tigers. And by the way, Clemson has recruited pretty darn well on the line but its a tough world with the trenches. Big boy football, 3 yards and a cloud of dust, was Tiger football in the 80’s but not now. It’s chunk plays and superior talent at skill positions these days ????

I think this year we may smash a good bit actually, could be crazy good year ??????. I’m ready, SPOT THE DADGUM BALL ??

Go Tigers!!

Ok...Skip the whole rant about style of offense. If you were a premier OL prospect wouldn't you want to go up against the best D-Line everyday in practice? Iron sharpens iron my friend, don't make excuses for why some top dogs are slipping away from us, we will still pull in some premier prospects on the offensive line this year. Just give it time.

I agree iron sharpens iron, but blocking Dexter everyday against Coach V's defense would be crazy.

ND and UGAy have good to elite defensive lines as well so your argument does not hold water. Our problem is we don’t have a good track record of putting olinemen in the league which hurts us on the recruiting trail. We will sigh 3-4 olinemen this year but they will not likely be elite

Re: Lot of talk about offensive lineman committing elsewhere

I don't understand why it's unfathomable to have some critiques of our program and for that to be perceived as being a dumper.

Saying we haven't recruited the OL as well as several other positions where we've stockpiled elite talent is simply a statement of fact. The reason for that relative lack of success is probably very complex but style of play might play a part in that. Look at the schools that a team consistently churn out NFL offensive linemen and one common factor is they play more of a pro style offense. Iowa, Wisconsin, UGA, Bama all lean heavier on the RB's and OL than we do. Whether they play that way because they tend to get higher caliber linemen or they get higher caliber linemen so they play that style is up for debate but there's at least some correlation.

This is a message board. The whole point is to have discussions with other fans who likely all don't think the same.

It's not mutually exclusive to be appreciative of the program Dabo and Co has built while also being able to point out things that can be improved.

so basically what you're saying is the only thing that should ever get posted is "Go Team Go"? Or a post "we won point party"? Kinda thought the definition of a forum was to debate issues. Guess not because most of it seems to be who can post the best gif denigrating an opponents team or mascot etc.

Post whatever you want. ..think however you want

Jun 18, 2018, 3:08 PM

Don't blame people for ctrizing you as a dumper or having conversations about people being dumpers and pumpers It is as valid as most anything else on this board. Point parties and gifs provide the same benifit o clemson athletics as discussions on 4-3 defenses. It's all irelevant banter to kill time.

Again.. the purpose of this electronic forum is to generate revenue for the owners. ..it is not designed to improve clemson athletics. Discussions are subject to the whims of the moderators.

Tnet seems to have the most objective moderators which makes it the best clemson board, IMO.

Not sure BornATiger, it's just that way around here anymore. Didn't used to be. Used to be you'd have a debate, shake hands and agree to disagree. Maybe working out anger? who knows. I know I took it on the chin this weekend on this very issue and told I didn't trust Dabo, we've been to playoff the last three years etc etc. but that's that.

I too think the OP was a rational point of view. I think it is complex as you've stated and as others have stated above. We don't put OL talent in the NFL and we do play a different style of football... However imo the NFL is no longer smashmouth football. Heck any nfl team runs the ball less than we do so I really don't get the arg of 3 yrds and a cloud of dust. Maybe in the nfl you clock different because most QB's are under center and step into the pocket? I'm asking.

Also, imo I think as the game progresses in the NFL you'll see more of them run an offense like we do vs uga... I just know I hate losing a recruit to uga - moreso than little bro. arrogant bunch of a-holes and I wish their was some way we could revoke uga and coot fans from reading and posting to tnet.

if you go through position by position, South Carolina's roster might be more talented than Clemson I'm not saying they're going to win, but Muschamp is doing an unbelievable job building his team like Clemson has. They're prioritizing elite Dlineman, Wr's, a star QB, and CB's

I think SC has a better Oline,
better WR's

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dude...

Jun 19, 2018, 7:11 AM

There is nobody in their right mind who think the Coots have a more talented roster than Clemson. Look at the recruiting rankings and it's not even close. Two of their best players (Edwards and Williams) would have come to Clemson if we had wanted them but we got players better than them.

I'm sure it's a troll but if you can actually believe it that is just asinine.

No argument with what you say, but it’s a choice

Jun 18, 2018, 3:54 PM [ in reply to Re: Lot of talk about offensive lineman committing elsewhere ]

It’s not science, it’s a young mans decision. I can only imagine the amount of stuff each recruit is told from all the teams he talks to. Dog eat dog world and our Tigers will win some and lose some. Clemson is primarily recruiting against only a few top level schools, those being Alabama/Georgia/FSU as the usual competitors. I see it as as easy decision but I’m 100 % Clemson ????

I think the Tigers do miss on players and it’s primarily style, which was not a rant, but rather a fact. NFL plays a style more like Alabama/Georgia, and that is a difference I’m afraid. It’s obvious what a difference that players like Hyatt make so I want all these top level recruits as well, nothing but complete agreement there. It’s just not rational to think the Tigers get most of them, but do need to get a fair share ??

There's 9-year-olds that have grown into a Class of 2020 that have been drooling over Clemson ball since they came of fan age - starting with what Sammy, Tajh, and Nuk were making happen and getting better and stronger every year since - not to overlook Spiller '09. We're not stiff, yet there's a firm set of rules and expectations at hand to get on the field and make it happen.

I understand top echelon / rated RB's going to more

Jun 18, 2018, 3:24 PM

traditional running programs instead of places like Clemson and more open style offenses. If you're a straight up running back the NFL draft may well be your biggest paycheck in your pro career, and offenses like ours don't typically offer 1st round material too often, which is about the only place the bank opens up. The NFL needs to correct its CB agreement to allow better pay and protection for the RB spot - they truly get robbed on the pay side considering what the position contributes to the game.

On the flip side, we've been putting RB's in the league, and will continue to do so with increasing frequency (ATM and Feast are next - maybe Choice). The position is evolving in the NFL also to include more receiving duties and we certainly prepare our guys for that role.

I don't know that Clemson has yet truly lived up to the "smash mouth spread" moniker - 2016 was the closest with Wayne Train and DW4 plus one of the best WRU sets in the game. Last year was such a play-it-safe season on offense - an anomaly from what got us here for the most part. Overall though, the program seems committed to developing top talent at all positions - nothing too sneaky other than talent and attitude - getting to heights you didn't know you had in you. We get some OL dudes, and we got project OL dudes. There's another corner we can turn in that category for sure. Winning and dynamic offense are our friends here.

Go Tigers.

Jun 19, 2018, 8:38 AM [ in reply to I understand top echelon / rated RB's going to more ]

Why should running backs be paid more in the nfl? It has proven to be the most replaceable position in football--look no further than the Dallas Cowboys. You or I could rack up 100yds a game behind that 16-17 O-Line they had. But in all seriousness, I don't think they should be paid more. They have a short shelf life in the league and they take a beating. The guys who always have and always will be paid the most are the guys throwing the ball (QB), the guys who block for the guy throwing the ball (OT), and the guys who try to sack the guy throwing the ball (DE + DT)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

if i was selling playing OL for Clemson vs UGA there are

Jun 18, 2018, 7:33 PM

Several good ways to spin it.

I played OL in a spread system. It takes a lot of pressure off the OL when you spread the field. It's a lot more fun playing OL in the spread. We have more yards per game and chunk plays when we are executing properly.

Lining up and playing old man football like uga is a boring grind. Run run pass.

Uga came out in the natty, vs a real defense and passed to set up the run. In the second half they reverted back to mike bobo bonehead playcalling. It was hilarious to watch them implode.

We need to load up on tackles, if they can't hack it at tackle move them down.

Re: Lot of talk about offensive lineman committing elsewhere

Jun 19, 2018, 6:05 PM

We have had a bunch of excellent O-lineman go through here over the years ...and least one Jeff Bostic, who should get some consideration for the NFL HOF. Who knows why we have not put more in the NFL, but why should we really care if we get good enough players to consistently win 11 games and play in the CFB Championships. I love watching our guys in the NFL, and quite frankly if one of ours isn't playing, I'm probably not watching. But quite honestly, it is more fun watching DW4 run and throw, and Mike Williams, Nuke, Jaron, etc. catch than watch an O-lineman block .... although I concede some observers had rather watch the line play (or at least that's what they say to make you think they know a lot about football).
