To Those Who Don't Like Play Calling...

Dec 9, 2022, 5:43 AM

What plays would you run? Different style offense? Be specific.

In general I don’t have a problem with it. Sometimes I scratch my head like that time at ND on 3rd and 3 midfield and we throw a deep sideline pass into double coverage but maybe that is more QB related. I think play calling is the easiest scape goat in football when most of the time reality is more complicated. On any given football Saturday there are at least 60 fan bases complaining about PC simply because they lost. So it must be a hard job.

On most play calls there are 3-4 options. The success or failure of the play is based on the QB reading the D and choosing the correct option. So the old days of getting in the huddle calling a specific play and running that play is no longer a thing in CFB except in certain circumstances like a goal line or short yardage play.

Any play that is not a bubble or wr screen...

Dec 9, 2022, 6:32 AM

They don’t work with any personnel we currently have

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think that we should call plays

Dec 9, 2022, 8:06 AM

That gains big yardage every time. You rarely lose when you can execute like that.

Did you see the screens to Ngata when Cade came in Saturday?? They worked better Saturday then they have in two years but Cade is basically getting the ball out as soon as it’s snapped

DJs windup killed screen plays the ball is coming way to late

The first thing I would do...

Dec 9, 2022, 8:08 AM

is remove all plays from the playbook that even remotely resemble a slip screen, a tunnel screen, a slow screen, a conventional screen, a jailbreak screen, a flare screen, or a bubble screen until the WR"s learn how to friggin' block.

Why? They were great plays when we had the guys who could

Dec 9, 2022, 6:45 PM

execute them...They didn't work with KB or DJ, but they certainly worked for Watson and Lawrence

Re: To Those Who Don't Like Play Calling...

We seem to be a little predictable, which we used to overcome with exceptional talent at the skill positions. But for the last two years, we haven't had exceptional WR, QB, and OL play. So being a little less predictable might help.

But, in the end, the real issue seems to be player recruitment and development. We've either failed to sign top players that could make an immediate contribution, or signed "great players" that haven't lived up to billing. As a result, we have had depth issues and haven't been able to overpower teams as we once did. And the portal and our use of it, seems to have magnified these issues. It's a difficult time to be a HC, even at a storied powerhouse like dear old Clemson. We have to trust that Dabo will get it figured out.

Our offense improved some when we put someone in motion prior to the snap. This caused the DB's & LB's to shift. Unfortunately, DJU either stood like a statue, threw to the wrong shoulder on a screen, or ran up the middle (somewhat successfully), Unfortunately, he could not escape and extend plays. Everyone looked better with Cade in the game. Hope it continues!

Play calling wasn't the issue...it was personnel

Dec 9, 2022, 8:38 AM

After watching Cade in the ACCCG, it became immediately obvious certain plays weren't called because DJ simply wasn't capable of making them. He didn't have the quickness, fast release, accuracy and ability to move the pocket that allows receivers to get open.

Like Spurrier, I would run a play that works then

I would run that play until they stopped it.

There will never be a game or a team when coaches will call plays that are successful every play. Plays are run by players that make mistakes and are run against players who want to stop their opponent as much as the offense wants to be successful. In other words, roll with the flow and be happy.

Re: To Those Who Don't Like Play Calling...

Dec 9, 2022, 9:10 AM

In general, I’d like to see us to play faster. And not downshift the offense so early. We had so many slow developing plays this year and that’s just infuriating to watch. RPO or delayed draws that fall apart because one breakdown, missed block and the whole thing implodes. We run those sometimes like we think we have the 90s Dallas Cowboys OL. Feels like we shoot ourselves in the foot with pacing sometimes. Also, along those lines, us pivoting to 3 straight runs early / mid 3rd quarter trying to use clock when we’re up 10-14 points is beyond painful to watch. Cannot stand playing to not lose mentality and play calling.

Specifics: Fewer WR screens, more quick slants. Get the ball out and get down. Get 4-5 yards on a first down pass makes it easier to run play action, or run on first down the next series. I’m not sure DJ threw a good ball for slants consistently though so, there’s that. Thought we could’ve run more 2 TE sets with Davis & Briningstool. More pre-snap motion. Fewer jump balls; we don’t have the same personnel for those to be as consistently successful as they were in prior years. And I know this may not be popular but I’d prefer see fewer called QB runs. I know our coaches love it but I think there are diminishing returns to doing that too often and unnecessary risk to the QB getting KO’d.

I do think we had a variety of well designed, well executed plays we ran down inside the 5 this year - it was more noticeable first half of the season. That was encouraging to see and I hope we continue to see that next season. We had some really good plays called in the red zone first half of this season.

I don’t think DJ is as bad as our system made him look the past 2 seasons and for the most part, I don’t think our offensive scheme is as bad as he made it look. It was a really bad match of player and scheme and off coaches didn’t do a great job finding a middle ground. We’ll see in the bowl game and more so next season when we have a larger post-DJ sample size. Cade vs UNC made our offense look far better no doubt. I’m still not completely sold on our offensive scheme.

That's not really necessary to buttress the critique . . .

Dec 9, 2022, 9:51 AM

One does not have to provide an alternate "system" or even an alternate book or set of plays to notice that the play-calling on the whole, has often been predictable, even in stretches in which it wasn't successful. It's one thing to call the same thing over when the other team simply cannot stop you - so I'm not advocating variety for variety's sake. But when you are constantly getting stifled on first and/or second down between the tackles, and throwing and absolutely glut of perimeter passes and screens, then the defense's know what to key in on, and the results during some stretches speak for themselves.

This critique still allows for other contributing factors -it's not just QB play, nor just play-calling . . . but the whole picture when put together is just screaming for something to keep the defense honest. When that is repeatedly not done, it's a perfectly fair critique - no specific alternate play calls necessary. The general critique is fine - the defenses know the percentages and if we continue to play them, the law of averages combined w/ how many guys they're playing in the box and up near the line will affect things. This critique is sufficient and true even if a distinct discussion should be had about the best alternatives.

Depends on who the quarterback is, but the first thing I do is; Quit with the behind the line and buddle screen passes as your 1st option. Don't do away with them all together but don't rely on them for 3rd and long.
If you receiving corp is not deep then don't throw deep except to keep the defense honest. Use short passes and move the chains. Run on first down but if your quarterback is not effective throwing deep, then run on 3rd and short. Use two tight ends if needed.
Finally ,in the red zone unless a touch down is need to win the game, take the 3.

Re: To Those Who Don't Like Play Calling...

Dec 9, 2022, 6:25 PM

Would like to see them use the middle of the field more often (TE or Running back)... get receivers in space. Maybe some drag routes underneath to hold the LB's...

Although it seems that CK2 opened up the playbook when he came in...

If we are going to run the dreaded bubble screen make sure the receivers block... I did like the way Cade ran it on Saturday as he was running then threw it, the CB can't jump the route when he does that...

Really anything that works with our personnel executed...

Re: To Those Who Don't Like Play Calling...

Dec 9, 2022, 6:34 PM

To be specific I would run tempo. Seems to get everyone in rhythm.

If the RB is gaining 3-4 yards a clip then run it down their throats. When they put 7 in the box make them pay with a pass.

When you go for it on 4th and 1 don’t throw a long fade to the sidelines.

Re: To Those Who Don't Like Play Calling...

Dec 9, 2022, 6:56 PM

For one thing, I would can (dump) the "quick" pass out the the sideline for the WRs, that has no blocking and very little success. Watkins made it work against the Buckeyes but no one else.
Secondly, if you call the RPO and hand the ball off to Shipley up the middle 17 out of 25 first down plays...
Third, if something works, come back to it and keep doing it until the other team stops you ... example, the running plays against USC were working the second half and with 4 minutes to go should have been all we saw until the winning FG.
Forth, how about some roll outs with the TE for a sure 6, 8, or more yds
Fifth, Quick slants over the middle to slot WR or TE

I could go on and on but I didn't see any much if any of this in the USC game and it had to be more than the limited abilities of the "QB that gives us the best chance to win."

Yes, I have complained about the play calling as it has been without creativity and is highly predicable to a fault..... but the conference championship gives me hope. Go Tigers!

I’d like to see the following:

Dec 9, 2022, 6:59 PM

1. Faster tempo
2. More pre-snap motion
3. More variety in the plays called

We seem to have devolved into a slow, methodical, predictable offense. We seem to run one of several plays, consisting of QB delayed run, RB off tackle, WR screen, or WR sideline pass. We sporadically pass to the tight end but rarely throw to anyone over the middle. We rarely do play action, or RB draw plays. Jet sweeps and end arounds are uncommon. RB runs outside are also not prominent.

I feel like defenses pretty much know what to expect.
