Like it or not...

We have seen in the past 10 years in Columbia what happens to an athletic program that increases its money and visibility. Teams like Clemson and Florida State have to be able to match money and visibility with their SEC rivals in the same state. You can deal with minor financial differences by not offering as many sports programs but you can't have significant differences in visibility and self promotion.

Winning helps the most but you have to be in a major conference to be relevant.

We know the SEC model of a geographically dense conference with regional matchups works. However, I think a wide ranging conference from somewhat different regions of the country has the potential to be a better conference for football. These games would be broadcast over much larger regions of the country and plain and simple are more interesting to watch.

I think the SEC model with a dense footprint

may take a back seat to a conference with a wider footprint because then you have a greater part of the US interested in the outcome of a game. For example, more people in Nebraska would be interested in a cross-regional Clemson-Oklahoma game than they would be in a Georgia-Florida game.

Plus, I think there is a little bit of backlash against the SEC. Maybe I'm prejudiced by message boards, but it seems that I've read and heard alot of hostility to the SEC, not because of their performance on the field but because of perceived preferrential treatment the SEC gets from ESPN.

I think viewers always want something fresh and new to watch. Give them a different conference that is as passionate about the game itself and actually scores points they will watch.

Give me a Clemson vs. Oklahoma State shoot out over 13-10 SEC slug fest anyday.

Agree. And I think will be more interesting than the SEC.***

what you lose with the close geography is the emotion that drives college football.... Alabama vs. Georgia. with 10,000 Bama fans in Sanford Stadium... Georgia vs Tennessee with 10,000 Bullldawgs in Neyland....

Fun for fans and the emotion carries into the stadium and into the living rooms... hard to create that level of intensity with a team 1000 miles away... it can be done.. ND VS. So Cal... but, those games are few and far between.

You're correct that is a major component as to why the SEC is successful. They also put a good product on the field. We can't out regionalize the SEC so we market ourselves in a different manner. Kinda like Target competing with Walmart. You come to the table with something a little different.
