Lifetime Syracuse fan here...let's talk tomorrow night

Oct 14, 2021, 4:36 PM

Happy game-week gentleman. Must say my favorite time of every season is getting our shot against the mighty Tigers, especially when you guys come up here to the play. For us, it has turned into a sort of rivalry considering 2017 and 2018. For you guys however, I'm sure not so much.

Let's talk about the match-up though. Coming into the season, our D was supposed to be the heart of our team, and early on, they were. We are stout up the middle on D, and because of this we tend to play the run very well. On the outside though, our guys are weaker and inexperienced, and our secondary has been extremely inconsistent because of it. We have some pretty good talent in that group, but their youth has attributed to several blown coverages and big plays given up this year, specifically in recent games. In 2017 and 18, part of the reason we were able to play y'all so well is because we had two great edge rushers that could generate pressure consistently only rushing 4. As of right now, our pass rush this year has been inconsistent to say the least, and I think we could see DJ have a breakout game because of it.

On offense however, we seem to be much improved from where we've been the past 2 years. We finally seem to have found a QB in Miss St transfer Garrett Shrader, who quite literally seems to be Eric Dungey reincarnated at times. We also have the best RB we've had in at least 15 years in Sean Tucker, and those two have made for a very dynamic backfield ever since Shrader took over the starting job. Problem is, we're a one trick-pony, and I'm sure Ventables will find a way to expose this. Our entire passing attack is set up from our ground game, whether that be play-action, bootlegs, designed rollouts, etc. We've had a decent amount of success with these play designs, but when asked to simply drop back and throw, Shrader and crew have been ineffective. Our WR group is quite frankly the worst we've had in a while, and it doesn't help our best guy in that group decided to hit the portal 2 weeks ago. Out of all of them, this might be the biggest match-up advantage you have on us.

One last major difference between this year's team, and the teams of '17 and '18 are special teams. If I do recall, in '18 our kicker made 2 or 3 50 yard field goals, and our punter was booming punts all over Death Valley, causing a key muff by Amari Rodgers early in the 4th (set up the TD that put us up 23-13). We were a special teams power house (as dumb as that sounds) during that time, having 2 punters in a row get drafted and a Lou Groza Award winner. Since then we completely got rid of the special teams coordinator position on our coaching staff, and we've paid the price for it. Our punter might possibly be the worst in the ACC, if not the P5, and our kicker has looked like a shell of himself from that time. I wouldn't be surprised if Clemson makes at least one big special teams play in this game.

Also one last thing, y'all got to stop with the hate on the Dome lol. I get it was hot, dark, and ugly, but it really is a unique place to play. The sight-lines are unbelievable, and it sure does get rockin if the Cuse are playing well. Plus it beats watching a game outside in 20 degree weather. I'd encourage you to come back since the renovation. Seriously, the lighting is beautiful, the jumbotron is sweet and the place just looks fantastic in comparison to before (plus there's finally AC). If not, y'all will notice the difference on TV.

Can't wait for tomorrow gentleman, and remember, it's always a scary time for Clemson when they come to the dome on a Friday night <img border=">. Cheers to a good game.

Per the Dome, to paraphrase an old football coach:

Oct 14, 2021, 4:43 PM

"Hot, dark and ugly is no way to go through life, son."

Seems like the Carrier company could have afforded some A/C and lights from the beginning, if they were going to attach their name to the building.

Funny part is Carrier lost the naming rights right before they did all the renovations too, so now it's known as just "The Dome" right when we finally have A/C too lol

Oct 14, 2021, 4:55 PM

I expect y’all to rush 3 and drop 8 most of the time We can barely run the football. QB can’t run. Sit back and force DJ to try and beat you. Occasionally Throw in a zone blitz on 2nd down or 3rd down to make it interesting. Up to this point DJ has struggled with accuracy so force him to make tough throws until he can prove it. Play calling is pretty uncreative but Dabo is likely heavy involved in that

Our D should keep us in the game.

Syracuse scored 7 points against Rutgers.

If it was possible for them to score negative points, it would happen against Clemson's defense.

Yeah that was with a different QB, hence why I said since Shrader took over. Since he's started we've averaged 30.3 ppg. Not that it's against great defenses or anything, but still worth noting.

Yeah, good chance it could be a slugfest for sure. I just think off pure talent and coaching you guys can exploit our weaknesses on both sides of the ball, hence why I said if DJ were to break out it would be against our young secondary. Hope both QBs can make for an exciting game though because both sure are talented.

I don't get all the excitement.

Syracuse is currently 3 - 3, the team has only played one half decent opponent, and the strength of schedule ranking is in the upper 60's to upper 70's depending upon which ranking you prefer.

I'm referring to Wake as the only half decent team you've played because their SOS ranking is just as poor if not worse.

We are excited because our offense looks completely different since our QB switch, best it's looked since 2018. We feel like we should be 2-0 in ACC play not 0-2, both last second losses that can be attributed to Dino's horrific clock management and in game adjustments. Just a lot of optimism because we haven't looked this competent in a minute, and plus I'm a die hard so I'm always thrilled when we play Clemson.

Oct 14, 2021, 5:35 PM

Hey man, Welcome!

The hate the Dome gets is a long standing joke from countless articles in 2013, before we played up there for the first time, on how we were unprepared for the heat. As if we did not just finish a summer in the south. In truth, it was mostly just mentioned as an oddity in passing, but it did appear in every article enough to make it a running joke around here. I think it was also homecoming and the Syracuse media was trying to hype up the environment so that why all that other stuff gets thrown in.

As for the game on Friday, thanks for your analysis. I was impressed on how y'all played against Wake. I think this is terrible timing for Syracuse to pull the upset. Getting Clemson off a bye with something to prove, while y'all come off a big game feeling like maybe you should have won. A different part of the year I would think this is a close game, but as you saw with Arkansas against Georgia timing matters. Give me Clemson by 3 scores.

Re: Lifetime Syracuse fan here...let's talk tomorrow night

Oct 14, 2021, 5:42 PM

If we test your secondary, you will be the first team this year where we have done that. As far as our D, we are missing our two best DT's, one who will be a top 10 NFL pick if healthy. The other DT will be anywhere from later first rounder until somewhere in the 3rd round if healthy. We are banged up on what would be, if healthy, a top 5 defense in the nation and probably top 2. I have no idea what to expect vs you guys. I am still calling Clemson 31-21, maybe 31-24.

Couldn't tell you off the top of my head. I just know we've had less than a 10 yard punt in at least 4 games now. We've also been rotating walk-on and scholarship punters for unknown reasons, probably because neither can figure it out.

Oct 15, 2021, 10:44 AM [ in reply to Now, you’ve made me curious. What’s the punter average on punts?*** ]

Individuals

James Williams averages 36.7 yards, worst in the ACC. He is the only player with enough punts (23) to qualify for rankings, and he's actually listed as a place kicker on the roster

Ian Hawkins has 6 punts for an average of 33.2 yards.
Colby Barker has 1 punt for 8 yards.

Spiers is second worst in the ACC, by the way, with an average of 41.8.

Team
Syracuse is last in the country with an average of 35 yards.

Tiger O is averaging 12.5 points per regulation game vs FBS opponents.

Fewer than 60 offensive plays per game.

You have an unbelievable take on the Cuse I agree with you from what I have seen in the Wake and FSU games Many of us Tiger fans do not have a lot of confidence in our offense There seems to many issues but to me DJ has been a disappointment We were spoiled to have had Lawrence and Watson for those 6 years I am hoping the open date has helped us improve our offense We will see tomorrow night If Veneables can come up with a good scheme I’m hoping he can slow down your QB and RB from running Those two running seems to be most of your offense and they are excellent runners I hope we can come away with a win I do look for a close game similar to the one you won a couple years back Good luck to you

Sounds like it’s going to be strength against strength ( your offense v our D) and weakness against weakness (your D v our offense). Might make for a very interesting game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Lifetime Syracuse fan here...let's talk tomorrow night

Oct 15, 2021, 12:15 AM

I wouldn't say either side of the ball on our team is necessarily a strength or weakness for us at this point. Both have shown flashes to be great, and also pretty awful at times. I just think personnel wise both team's offense's match up well with the respective team's D. Obviously still giving you guys the edge based off sheer talent and coaching alone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Awesome post and thank you for your insights....

Oct 14, 2021, 8:57 PM

I am sure this has been covered ad nauseam but this will be a good game.

Our defense is good but we are missing our top defensive tackles but we have a decent run-stopping LB core.

Our offense simply can't score against anyone.

Enjoy the game...but not too much ;).

Syracuse has the misfortune of playing wounded Tigers who have had an extra week to kick their wounds and collect themselves.

Tiger defense will be ready. While I don’t except Clemson will put up 50, I do think the offense will show improvement and pull away by more than two scores.
