Let's talk about our defense this year compared to Alabama's

Jun 24, 2017, 9:35 AM

Last year. I see a lot of talk about how we will be much like Alabama last year with a very effective defense and a just passable offense. I'm not being a Debbie downer because I think we will actually have a great year. But there is one huge thing people miss in that comparison. Alabamas defense was a scoring defense. Our defense should be very effective and best word to describe will be ridiculous. But we don't have a lot of stripping the ball, ints for returns etc. I'm not sure that's a big part of our d. So I think our d is going to go down as one of best ever but won't put a lot of points on the board. What say you?

It will be lights out. Keep us in every game

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed but my point is that you can't compare our o to alabamas bc

Jun 24, 2017, 9:50 AM

Our o will have to score points to win. Our d keeps us in game I agree but won't hang 14 on the board.

They don't need to score. Our offense is going to be much better than "passable". Our scheme alone is more dynamic than Alabama's. We may not have the Hulk running the ball like they do every year but we aren't short on talent back there and the rest of the guys are lights out. And I'll put any of our QB's up against the freshman Jalen Hurts.

Our offense can handle the scoring. Our defense is going to give us lots of opportunities, short fields, and as a result apply a ton of pressure to opponents to catch up (take risks, become one dimensional, etc)

Agreed this is what I hope for. Lots of short fields including 4 and outs and

Turnovers. I agree I think our o will be more than passable. We have all the positions loaded. Biggest ??s are qb and te and I trust our coaches to put it in the guys hands who can win it for us. I think we could win with any of them. I think we are 10+ wins this year and if a couple of things go our way we end up in the mix again. By that point qb is no longer a new starter and has a few pressure games under belt. I still think we look back st this as a year typical of the Dabo era.

There is also the difference that Bama was a premier rushing team and clemson is not.

Its the weak SEC rush defense.

Alabama's defense benefits from playing in the SEC

Jun 24, 2017, 10:35 AM

The numbers look better when you play teams week-in and week-out that have terrible offenses, as the SEC does.

The have had solid defenses recently, but nothing legendary like the media would have you think. Clemson has proven that two years in a row.

The ACC

Jun 24, 2017, 11:26 AM

has a much more diverse group of offenses and more offenses which are complex, reasonably balanced offenses.

Alabama's defense, playing in The ACC last year, would not be nearly as productive. Our offensive production in the national championship was on average - very close to our production within the ACC.

Alabama stopped our running game, but we could pass. Very few SEC offenses have complex, successful passing offenses (spread) that are numerous in the ACC.

Nobody, I repeat nobody has a Mack truck with nitrous on the line play after play like Dexter Lawrence after a year in the weight room!! We definitely got the best player last year11111 now everybody is scared to face him even with a double team!!

We might be a scoring defense.

Maybe we have more speed off the edge to create some fumbles. Big Dex will be even better in the middle. Most of all, we have some young stud db's too who might get some pick sixes. Our talent was upgraded of course, but they weren't all ready. I am expecting more from our D this year than last years. I think our D will just keep getting better over the next 4 years every year.

Jun 24, 2017, 12:02 PM

think linebacker will be a huge upgrade this year, there is so much more talent and depth to work with. Last year they were a bit of a WIP until late in the season. We have enough coming back and plenty more waiting in the wings for this to get interesting.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we were a wip I agree great point. And this is one of the things Dabo does

Jun 24, 2017, 12:24 PM

Better than tb in my opinion. Tb teams occasionally came out looking great and fizzled. I believe Dabo sets up the mentality that we get better each week. It's fun to watch and if we can make it to November with 2/3 wins vs auburn, fsu, Louisville I think we are a different team and will be playoff worthy. Will be fun to watch our offense get better each week and our defense keeping them in every game.

this would be interesting to see. I think our defense is going to be

Bama's defense spent ~35 minutes on the field and our defense only ~25. Do de maf.

I think you are missing my point. I agree that we will have an amazing defense.

Jun 24, 2017, 12:20 PM

It will be one of the best we can remember will rival defenses under ford. I just don't see it as our strategy for them to score. Best points made are ones that say we will leave a short field and have time of possession which I'll give you credit for suggesting. Our defense will be 100% lights out but why won't score much. It's just a different style. I'm only saying that the comparison isn't that great.

Re: Let's talk about our defense this year compared to Alabama's

You also have to think about the level of QB play that the SEC had last year. For Jalen Hurts to come in and be named the offensive player of the year as a freshmen, shows you how weak the QB play was. Personally I think our D line is going to force QBs to make a lot of mistakes. It's pretty much a given that you have to double Dex, because of his size and speed, but then you leave the rest of the line 1 on 1 with future 1st rounders (including Bryant). The amount of pressure that we'll be able to dial up only rushing 4 will be unreal, forcing QBs to take their chance throwing into tight windows or taking a loss of 7-10 on a sack.

Great point about the qbs in sec.***

Re: Let's talk about our defense this year compared to Alabama's

Jun 24, 2017, 12:22 PM

We won't really know until the season is in the books and as other posters have said, stats won't be a fair comparison because ACC offenses (at least last year) were vastly superior to SEC offenses, so their D numbers were propped up on weak competition. So just based on returning production and preseason projections:
--I'd put our starting D-line ahead of theirs, they'd have the better depth
--Their LBs were elite. Ours should be very good and certainly deeper and more athletic than last year. But for now I'd give them the edge.
--Our secondaries were about even last year, though they were better run stuffers and we were better pass defenders. Replacing Tank and Jadar will be tough. Our returning guys have got to get better at coverage without inference. We really need Muse and Mullen to have break out years, the veterans to be reliable, and solid depth from guys like Wallace, Simmons, and Terrell. We could be elite but guys have to produce on the field.

Good point. To be clear I think our defense this year will be better than

Jun 24, 2017, 12:28 PM

Their defense last year. I just don't see us scoring that many points on d. Part of it is because we don't strip the ball part of it is because we don't intercept a lot and when we do it's rare to take it to the house. I don't see our d scoring a lot. But I see huge numbers for tfl, sacks, hopefully turnovers, low numbers for fd.

It's a fair point. Bama's defense put up a lot of points last year. I'm not sure the differences in emphasis for technique between us and them, but if we are able to pressure the qb more and with the length or our db's we may be able to produce some points. The sky is the limit with this group, but they may have been coached to take more risks. We shall see.
