Let's get a few things straight about Bates to OU

Jan 4, 2022, 8:35 AM

There was communication between Dabo, BV and Bates through the process. BV didn't just decide to burn all bridges with Dabo over Todd Bates. Bates may have reached out to BV after being passed over here, but this didn't catch Dabo off guard. BV most likely had Bates inform Dabo of their communication. Dabo did all he could to keep him aside from promoting him to the position he desired.

Knowing this, we also know Dabo has also already been considering his options. With no clear candidate on staff it's likely to be someone from elsewhere. Names have been floated here and it would not surprise me if one of them were the choice. But Bates came from coaching at Dabo's camps and with the personal recommendation of Dan Brooks. Don't know what DL coaches from elsewhere have been involved at Dabo's camps, but it's been a place he's identified people before. Richardson came this way. Conn coached camps as well.

I expect a hire in the next week.

Also, everyone who has left the staff, on field or support, has left for a promotion, not a lateral move. As Dabo has stated countless times, that's part of what he's doing. Developing coaches as well as players.

I believe Bates wanted to leave, and reached out to Venables. So what was V supposed to do…refuse to hire the guy? I’m sure the first thing V did was call Dabo.

And to your last point…Right, there’s no way a guy like Dabo is not going to end up with a big “coaching tree” before it’s all said and done. That is well underway now.

I get why Bates left, it was a biz decision. However, based on the circumstances, it seems implausible that Dabo anticipated Bates' departure at this time. He was just promoted and given a raise. Additionally, Dabo pulled Bates out of relative obscurity not too long ago and placed him on a top tier program staff. So much for loyalty to a guy that gave you your BIG break. Bates' resume was quite weak pre-Clemson: 6 yrs of "college" coaching experience at Jax St., some comm. college I never heard of and Idaho St. I doubt this guy was on the radar of any other top tier program.

Thank you. Some folks think this is high treason. People should have opportunities in their profession. Miguel and Coach Bates get to live in a beautiful part of the country (minus tornados), get involved in God’s work at a Bible teaching church out there and help a good friend as he takes over a daunting task. SEC football. You are spot on! Thank you and Happy New Year!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m constantly amazed how fast people turn on our coaches here.

Jan 4, 2022, 8:46 AM

People want to vilify BV. It amazes me. After all the comments about how Dabo is family, etc. after the years of service. He’s now a “villain” because he gave a guy on our staff a promotion. Some of you really think that BV went behind Dabo’s back? I mean, I have no insider info…but that seems like what would happen here to some of you? THAT’S the most reasonable conclusion you can draw? (“You” referring to someone that thinks that way, not any specific poster on this thread)

I have no issue with Bates or any coach going anywhere...

Jan 4, 2022, 8:57 AM

to further their career. This is a business and it just became more of one with the NIL.

I just think some people wonder if Dabo is simply promoting people based on personal friendships over coaching acumen regardless of whether this assumption is right or wrong.

I guess we will never know but the unknown hire out of Alabama (Dabo's old roommate) did nothing to dispel this argument.

I think most people, me included, will and should wait until we see the product on the field before making any judgments.

For example, Wes, is a super intriguing hire to me. I am really excited to see what he does. I also hope we find a solid interior D line coach who can recruit.

Re: CDS only hires friends, families, ex-Bama guys: (?) BV

Jan 4, 2022, 9:04 AM

Hello @pPACIFIC BEACH TIGER® and others concerned about Dabo only hiring friends.

Why was Brent Venables hired by Dabo in the first place?

Bama connection? No, Venables was a K State graduate.

Coached together before? Nope ... no overlap between Venables and Dabo prior to BV being hired by Dabo after the 2011 season.

Family connection? I dunno, but I don't think that BV and CDS are related.

That's all for now, thanks for reading.

I am talking about the current hires.

The guy from Bama was hired as an analyst

Jan 4, 2022, 9:06 AM [ in reply to I have no issue with Bates or any coach going anywhere... ]

how many of our analysts can anyone even name? No one knew Goodwin, but BV and Dabo sure wanted him. Conn was a friend, but also a highly successful HS coach. He along with Richardson were brought in as analysts specifically to give the room voices from the HS level. The new guy follows this same pattern.

As for hiring people he knows, he's known basically everyone he's hired outside of Steele, Chad, Reed and Brent. That's what coaches do.

It's always determined by performance on the field. That never changes

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree 100%. I have no idea what an analyst

Jan 4, 2022, 9:28 AM

really contributes but wasn't Wes just one? Now he is DC?

It was news and we read it so, of course, people are going to react to it. But Dabo could hire Barney Fife as an analyst for all I care. Just keep the defense humming baby.

Truth be told, I am worried about DL recruiting but not the defense itself. Offense, well, that's another story.

The Covid year really complicates all recruiting

Jan 4, 2022, 9:34 AM

At DT I think we can count on Breese and Davis being gone after next year. But that leaves Ruke with 2 more years, Williams and Reuben with 3, Page and Capehart with 4 years of eligibility. So there is not exactly an immediate crush. I do expect 2 high end signings minimum here

At DE Murphy is gone next year, along with Henry and Mascoll. There will be some immediate needs there. But we'll still have Swint and Williams with 3 years left, and Patterson and Denhoff with 4. I expect a couple of studs here in 2022.

I can see us taking 5-6 DL in 2022

Things are really getting out of hand when Dabo hires his Mom as an analyst. Can't believe this is what we have come to as a program. SMH

^^^This^^^ is where I think the angst is coming from

Jan 4, 2022, 9:19 AM [ in reply to I have no issue with Bates or any coach going anywhere... ]

I personally am going to withhold all judgement to I see what happens on the field. Best is standard so I expect EVERY coach and player to live up to it. Whether successful or not, it all will be squarely on Dabo's shoulders as this is 100% his plan

The downside to hiring 'friends'

Jan 4, 2022, 9:31 AM

is that you might need to fire that friend one day. I hired my brother one time and it was the worst decision I have ever made business-wise.

Firing him was no picnic either.

Re: Let's get a few things straight about Bates to OU

Jan 4, 2022, 9:01 AM

I don't know what conversations took place, but I think you're likely correct. At the very least I'm not going to get upset over BV in this situation without having a clue how things took place. For all we know BV and Dabo could've talked about all this when they were out on the road recruiting together when the Oklahoma job first came open. I could see Dabo asking BV who he'd recommend taking over the DC position and who BV would like to take with him to Oklahoma. I'm sure at that point Dabo would rather have kept everyone, but he very well could've given BV his blessing to make an offer to Bates and letting Bates decide where he'd rather be.

Let me put it this way, if Bates would rather be in Oklahoma then would we really want him to stay at Clemson simply because BV decided not to offer him a position out of loyalty to Dabo? We talk all the time of wanting players who are all in so wouldn't we want the same for our coaches? At that point if he didn't leave for Oklahoma then it would be just as likely for him to leave for somewhere else next offseason.

Re: Let's get a few things straight about Bates to OU

Jan 4, 2022, 9:06 AM

Or let me put it another way. If Dabo knew Bates would rather be working in Oklahoma do you really think he'd ask BV to not offer him the job just to make him have to stay in Clemson?

Jan 4, 2022, 9:13 AM

Let's get a few things straight, period; Regardless if there was any communication between Dabo ,BV and Bates
it is inmaterial . If Bates wants to go, and BV offers him a position then go. It's a free country ,and there is nothing keeping Bates from leaving for other opportunities.
It's the same thing with players opting out through the portal. It's that athletes right to move on if he thinks he has a better opportunity somewhere else.
You win a few ,a lose a few. The only guy I don't want to lose is Dabo.
But he has the same options.

Jan 4, 2022, 9:54 AM

Well said leftie. And posters as myself saying Bates is a big loss doesn't mean I hate him or think he's a turncoat or whatever. Maybe seen 1 or 2 posts out of thousands that suggest otherwise.

Friendships are irrelevant just as all the nice love letters are. It's a job and you do what's best for yourself and your family. Does anyone think Kirby or Nick discuss recruiting and getting "permission" - right. It's strictly business.

Hold on just a dang minute! Are you trying to say that BV is

Jan 4, 2022, 9:20 AM

not a lowdown turncoat snake? Are you saying that Bates is not a dirty ungrateful POS? Are you actually claiming that Dabo is not losing his grip on the program? Do you really believe that Clemson football is not DOOMED????? <img border=">">">
