Tanner Muse vs. ESPN

Jun 11, 2014, 8:39 AM

How is this kid a 3? safety with ESPN ? Can someone send them his tapes ? When you watch his films you see he plays with great speed (4.47 /40) and agility and covers the entire field well. His pass coverage is as good as I have seen for a kid listed at 6'4" and 200+ lbs .Then there is his nasty hitting. He is an intimidator for sure , you can see that he plays the game in the mold of Lester Hayes and Ronnie Lott ...kid likes to thump.
How is this 3? ranking justified by the ESPN'ers ?
Anyone with any defensive football knowledge can see that Tanner Muse deserves to be rated much higher.

I forgot to mention that he is also a great student and involved in activities that benefit his community . Do these things factor into a HS prospects star rating with ESPN ?

Rivals, Scout, ESPN, 247: Star rating systems explained

By Jeff Nusser ? @NussCoug on Feb 5 2013, 6:32p 5

National Signing Day is on the horizon, and we -- like everyone else -- are going to be throwing around a lot of "star" ratings tomorrow.

The star ratings are a quick and dirty way for recruiting services to convey the talent level of a specific recruit, ranging from two stars to five stars. (Don't ask me why there are no one star recruits like on NCAA 13 -- I have no clue.) It's not hard to figure out that more stars are better, but just what do those stars mean? If you're a newbie to recruiting -- or if you've never actually looked into it -- here you go.

The Consensus Rating

This is the number you'll see most often around CougCenter tomorrow. As you'll see shortly, the method behind the madness of star ratings can vary from site to site, never mind the differences in opinion on a particular player. At CougCenter, we have chosen to use 247's Composite Rating for our standard rating of a player since it takes all four major recruiting services into account and is the simplest idea to communicate. When you read us referring to a player as a "consensus [x]-star" recruit, this is what we mean:

The 247Composite Rating is a proprietary algorithm that compiles prospect "rankings" and "ratings" listed in the public domain by the major media recruiting services. It converts average industry ranks and ratings into a linear composite index capping at 1.0000, which indicates a consensus No. 1 prospect across all services.
However, we know that many readers frequent the various services and see the differences. Here's a more detailed breakdown.

Scout

Given the preeminence of Cougfan.com in the WSU recruiting sphere, this is the system you likely find yourself looking at most often. The key to remember with Scout is that the number of stars next to a player's name is not reflective of a player's true ability -- it's a reflection of the player's skill level relative to his peers:

Understanding Scout.com's Top 300 is really not that difficult. A five-star rating is awarded to the top 50 prospects. A four-star rating is awarded to a prospect that is considered one of the next 250 best players, ranked No. 51 to 300.
That means a guy who is a three-star recruit in a very deep year, talent wise, might have been a four-star recruit in another year. Or vice versa. Tyler Bruggman is the only WSU recruit rated four stars by Scout.com. There are no five-star players in this class.

Rivals

Not everyone does it that way. Rivals rates players based on the impact they are expected to have at their new school and their stars are a little more flexible -- and more generous -- than Scout:

A five-star prospect is considered to be one of the nation's top 25-30 players, four star is a top 250-300 or so player, three-stars is a top 750 level player, two stars means the player is a mid-major prospect and one star means the player is not ranked.
Rivals also assigns each player a number in their evaluation. Here's what they mean.

6.1 Franchise Player; considered one of the elite prospects in the country, generally among the nation's top 25 players overall; deemed to have excellent pro potential; high-major prospect
6.0-5.8 All-American Candidate; high-major prospect; considered one of the nation's top 300 prospects; deemed to have pro potential and ability to make an impact on college team
5.7-5.5 All-Region Selection; considered among the region's top prospects and among the top 750 or so prospects in the country; high-to-mid-major prospect; deemed to have pro potential and ability to make an impact on college team
5.4-5.0 Division I prospect; considered a mid-major prospect; deemed to have limited pro potential but definite Division I prospect; may be more of a role player
4.9 Sleeper; no Rivals.com expert knew much, if anything, about this player; a prospect that only a college coach really knew about
Once again, Bruggman is the Cougs' highest rated recruit by Rivals (5.8/four stars), but cornerback Daquawn Brown and defensive tackle Paulo Lepua are right behind (5.7/three stars).

ESPN.com

The Worldwide Leader is a relative newcomer to the recruiting game. Like Rivals, each player is assigned a number -- only this time, it's on a 100-point scale:

Rare prospects: 100-90 [Five stars]
These players demonstrate rare abilities and can create mismatches that have an obvious impact on the game. These players have all the skills to take over a game and could make a possible impact as true freshmen. They should also push for All-America honors with the potential to have a three-and-out college career with early entry into the NFL draft.

Outstanding prospects: 89-80 [Four stars]
These players have the ability to create mismatches versus most opponents and have dominant performances. These players could contribute as a true freshmen and could end up as all-conference or All-America candidates during their college careers and develop into difference-makers over time.

Good prospects: 79-70 [Three stars]
These players show flashes of dominance, but not on a consistent basis -- especially when matched up against the top players in the country. Players closer to a 79 rating possess BCS-caliber ability and the potential to be a quality starter or all-conference player. Players closer to a 70 rating are likely non-BCS conference caliber prospects.

Solid prospects: 69-60 [Two stars]
These players are overmatched versus the better players in the nation. Their weaknesses will be exposed against top competition, but have the ability to develop into solid contributors at the non-BCS FBS level and could be a quality fit for the FCS level of play.
The Cougs have four players rated four stars by ESPN: Junior college transfer Vince Mayle, grayshirt WR Robert Lewis, Bruggman, and linebacker Peyton Pelluer.

247 Sports

This is basically the same as Rivals, which should come as no surprise - 247 was founded by the guys who sold Rivals to Yahoo! for a presumably large sum of cash.

110-101 = A player ranked in this range is a "franchise player." He is one of the best to come along in years - if not decades (LeBron James, Adrian Peterson). Odds of having a player in this category every year is slim. This prospect has "can't miss" talent.

100-98 = Five-star prospect. One of the top 25 or so prospects in the nation. Player has excellent pro potential, and should emerge as one of the best players in the country before his college career ends.

97-90 = Four-star prospect. Prospect will be an impact-player for his college team. All-America candidate who displays pro potential. Typically one of the top 300 players in the nation.

89-80 = Three-star prospect. These are the players who will develop into reliable starters for the college teams. They are among the best players in their region of the country, and are generally among the top 750 players in the nation.

79-below = Two-star prospect. These players make up the bulk of Division I rosters. They may have little pro potential, are likely to become role players for their respective schools or not enough is known about the prospect to rank them accurately.
So there you go. While each service is relatively similar, there are some significant differences. Keep that in mind when looking at all those stars tomorrow.

their likelihood to sign with an SEC school. As soon as that's no longer a possibility, it's off to the scrap heap with them. I'm glad he's going to be a Tiger. Tape is really impressive.

Combines

Jun 11, 2014, 8:49 AM [ in reply to Re: Tanner Muse vs. ESPN ]

Film doesn't play nearly as big of a role in espn rankings as these combines do.
He may be one of those that never goes to combines a lot like the DE from bamberg. I'm sure if he went to a few sponsored "combines" he would get a better rating and a lot more attention

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He plays baseball during combine events. You are right that

That last statement explains a lot. If he is a great student, he would not fit in well at secheat schools (outside Vandy). That has to be their reasoning.

Jun 11, 2014, 8:54 AM

No doubt he is a natural athlete and has good size. He comes from a real nice family too.

One of the "issues" with Tanner is shoulder health. He had a AC joint sprain/tear his Sophmore year which caused him to play a little timid. You could tell he was concerned with every hit and would shy away from using his shoulder. He improved tremendously last year as the year progressed, but this obvioulsy limts his highlight tape.

Also, since he is such a natural athlete (as is his "little" brother) he plays multiple sports, including basketball and baseball. I'm not sure, but this may have limited his exposure since he didn't do the multiple football camps in the summer.

As usual, it is probably better to rate him based on offers, of which he had plenty...most major ACC, Big 10 and SEC schools.

He has a tough decision ahead of him, no doubt.

Jun 11, 2014, 9:08 AM

He could be an early enrollee at Clemson, but also could be a top pick in the 1st-3rd rounds of the draft. I'm willing to bet he'll wait on enrolling and see where he goes in the draft, then decide from there, ala Jeff Francouer.

Don't worry so much about ratings

Jun 11, 2014, 9:12 AM

That's my way of dealing with the "professional" sports world. They think the SEC and in particular Bama can almost do no wrong, and they key in at times of players and give them unreasonably high or low ratings. Just the fact that two sites like ESPN and Scout can be so different at times, by almost 2 stars in the worst cases, says something.

Two things I enjoy: being the underdog and proving the odds makers wrong. And having underrated players and classes and producing winners AND NFL talent. Many "experts" were luke warm about NUK in high school, for example. Maybe it had to do with location - Daniel - and how he was recruited, but still. They didn't get that one exactly right, now did they?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Don't worry so much about ratings

Jun 11, 2014, 9:17 AM

You are correct NorthernTiger , NUK was fairly undervalued as a two sport star coming out of Daniel.
I trust our staff on this offer/evaluation thing. I just saw where Muse on film came off as good or better than the same 4? kids in his class and wasnt getting the respect from ESPN .

It may have to do with attention

Jun 11, 2014, 9:28 AM

Can't prove it, but at times it has felt like some players don't even get serious scrutiny based on how they are being recruited. With Muse only 1 SEC program was pursuing him and maybe one other "big" program (Michigan? Don't remember.)

So - and it's just speculation - a lot of "sports experts" maybe don't spend much time analyzing all his clips the same way the do others when they see recruiters more actively pursuing. Especially the SEC. A kid with multiple SEC schools chasing him is almost assured of at LEAST 4 stars by many.

I still stand by my opinion - Can you really say a class ranked #3 is that much better than a class ranked #13? Sure, there is a difference between schools who are routinely in the top 5 and those who barely see the top 20 or top 30. But a star here and there means almost nothing. Especially given that it is based on opinions.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I know the Muses. You are wrong that only one SEC team

Jun 11, 2014, 9:42 AM

was pursuing him. He was a hot commodity(prior to his commit), ESPN just didn't catch it and publish the demand. He had offers from most of the SEC schools(maybe not Bama or LSU); UGA, USuC, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Vandy and Florida. Notre Dame was high on him, along with Ohio State and Michigan. All ACC schools offered and Fedora flew down to his games in a helicopter.

If the offers aren't made public how would anyone know?

Jun 11, 2014, 10:10 AM

The information doesn't have to be made public. Some recruits do it to up their value. Some don't.

But the writers probably share the same public information. Sure, some writers who focus on certain conferences or teams may have "insider" information. But unless it's public, they cannot share it.

So my only point is that regardless of what is actually going on, the writers respond to what is known. And it's my observation you see less written about kids (in the region) who don't have a lot of SEC sniffing going on. At least those without publicly acknowledged sniffing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If the offers aren't made public how would anyone know?

Jun 11, 2014, 10:22 AM

I think we are saying the same thing. The offers were there, just not publicized.
For the record, I'm not saying Tanner should be a 4 star player. Frankly, I don't know. He's good; but I have seen other great athletes come through the conference who I thought were D-1 players that never materialized. I do believe that he has the potential to be as good at safety/Nickle as any current safety on our team.
