it's past time to acknowledge that Danny Ford played the central role in the forced resignation. If Coach Ford would have learn to use a filter when talking, none of that would have ever happened. And I'm a big fan of Coach Ford, but his major flaw was putting his foot in his mouth.

over-reacted in that situation and said and did things they probably regretted later on. And to be sure, a lot of fans over-reacted as well.
I think every alum is proud of the university's continuing academic progress and especially the beaming national example of the term "student-athlete" McFadden has become. Perhaps it was necessary for Clemson to go through "growing pains" during that time period to get to this point......I just hope we never have to undergo it again.

I can't help but feel like the administration overestimated Danny's personal role in the violations. ....yes I know there were other factors involved, but I know they undestimated the 20 years of lost football that resulted from Ford's firing .

To miss it. I was in school at the time and the cars in front of Mauldin Hall (at the time the football dorm) were all new Monte Carlos. And everyone knew they were courtesy of BC Inabinet. Everyone knew. And Danny pitched a fit to get a completely separate athletic dorm/village. At the time it felt like one reason was to hide what everyone knew was going on.

The Admin didn't over react, the NCAA read the Admin the riot act and strongly implied things (i.e. sanctions) will be easier if you get rid of Danny. This wasn't too long after SMU and Clemson was eligible for the DP, so they followed the NCAA's advice. this is how the NCAA works. if Clemson balked and kept Danny, the NCAA would have directly implicated Danny and emasculated Clemson w/ sanctions that would have all but shut us down.

elemental than that....it was basically a power/prestige/influence struggle that was allowed to fester to a point that surgery had to take place. I only hear about this supposed NCAA conspiracy from jealous chickens. Don't believe it.

cars they couldn't possibly have afforded in the 80s? Sure they did. As they did at USC, UGA, TN, etc., etc. BC Inabinet was not a player in the Ford years though. None of this has anything to do with Lennon's long-overdue departure and very, very little to do with Ford's self-inflicted departure....

When Lennon made the statement...."we are going to de-emphasize athletics at CU" is what started the downturn.... Lennon was a good man, but he did not like the fact that Ford had as much power with the BOT, and it ultimately came to a head. I agree that Ford had a hard time dealing with Lennon, but some of that was created by Lennon.

Danny fired himself in 1990 - I love that man but it's true. The relatively minor NCAA violations investigated in 1988 and '89 had little to nothing to do with it. He was insubordinate on a number of issues to include the whole football dorm / academic advising center brouhaha.
Lennon was forced out in 1994 when the Faculty Senate was on the verge of taking a no confidence vote on his "leadership." Lennon was a decent enough, basically well-meaning fellow, BUT he had zero leadership skills. He later was forced out as President of his alma mater, Mars Hill College. Lennon was a plodding, unimaginative, humorless bureaucrat - the polar opposite of Jim Barker and Jim Clements.

Agree. I was a student when Lennon came to Clemson and felt he was a pompous academian that only cared about research dollars. He never seemed to have that Clemson spirit and he darn sure didn't seem to care about us undergrads. He never embraced much of Clemson at all - especially our military heritage as he never attended a single ROTC function that he was invited to during my time at Clemson (and we invited him to a lot of events). IMO he was a sorry individual and was glad when Clemson dumped him - good riddance. Clemson was/is too good of a place to have a turd like Max Lennon at the helm...

And unfortunately, after a short tenure by Phil Prince, he was followed up by Deno Curris who is mostly remarkable for being completely unremarkable. Nice guy I'm sure, but I felt like the university didn't do much more than tread water during his term.

I thought Lennon was an awful president. I was a student for his last 3 years in office and thought he ran the university terribly. I never once met the man. He never came to events, practices, classrooms, nothing. The only time I ever saw him was when we crossed paths as he walked up to the Clemson House for a meal (or maybe to do something in the penthouse, I dunno). He would barely even *look* at students except to avoid colliding with them, much less give a nod, much less a hello, much less a handshake. Not saying he had to have a great personality to be a good President, but I think it was indicative of his overall aloofness and disconnect with the Clemson family.
In contrast, when Phil Prince became acting president in 1994 he was practically *everywhere* on campus and I got to shake his hand several times. Now that man was a great President, even if only for a year. Lennon stunk. I was happier when he left than when Ken Hatfield left.
