I know many of you may not remember but 1981

Jul 19, 2021, 2:59 PM

Was a pretty good year in Clemson football. Here’s a 20 minute recap of the season, we had our moments as all teams do in that season where we could have blown it.

Hint UGA had 9 turnovers because our Defense was awesome!

Much watch

and the Orange Bowl win over Nebraska. I had a lot of friends on the team, and I actually made it down to the Orange Bowl field after the canine protection left (they were trying to keep the field in order since the Dophins were in playoffs the next day). Great memory.

I remember on the way home flying over the stadium. The lights were on an Miami was getting ready for their game. The pilot of the plane came over the PA and announced it was official. Tigers were national champions!! That was my sophomore year at CU.

One thing that really stands out about that season; Clemson was coming off an underwhelming 6-5 record in 1980 and a 4th place finish in the ACC, so the 81 team was not ranked in any of the preseason polls.

Around campus, there really wasn't a lot of buzz or excitement surrounding this team or the upcoming season until Clemson beat Georgia (13 - 3) in week three and made its first appearance in the polls at No. 18.

After beating UVa a few weeks later, Clemson jumped something like six or seven spots in the poll to No. 9. That's when things started to get interesting and the national media really started paying a bit more attention to little ole Clemson.

Many thanks for this post. I still have my Orange Outbreak poster from 1981 (similar to the Farm Bureau posters from recent years) where I wrote down the scores of each football game and added the Nebraska score to it. The poster has pictures of Shawn Weatherly, Homer Jordan, Danny Ford, Lee Nanney, and Jeff Davis. I Remember listening to the Georgia game on the radio that year. If you recall, very few games wete on television at that time. Jim Phillips always did a wonderful job of bringing the games to us via radio. I am a 79 Clemson grad, And was in my third year of medical school in Charleston during that season. I have saved all of the newspaper articles from the Greenville news, Post And Courier, and Anderson Independent (I am from Anderson) about the national championship. A season I shall never forget! And on the poster, I also wrote what our ranking was after each game. Thx again!!!

Very cool post. That brings back a ton of memories. I was a freshman in 80-81 and we always had a great time at the games. Do you remember how big the first Friday parade used to be? That was a great time to be at Clemson. My son is going to be a sophomore this year and he is already moving off campus because of the Covid restrictions. I hate that for today's students... they are missing out on so much of the Clemson experience.

Sometimes it’s interesting what stands out in a person’s memory. That August I was at a golf course in Charleston and a complete stranger saw my Clemson hat and we started talking about the upcoming football season. He said he was good friends with Danny Ford and told me to expect big things from the Tigers in the upcoming season. He said that Danny had told him that this team could be
“As good as they want to be.” After what had happened in the 1980 season I was doubtful but as the 1981 season played out the stranger’s prediction came true. I’ve always wondered if he really knew Coach Ford or if he was just running his mouth.

My memory of the 81 Orange Bowl.

That was a long time ago. I didn't follow Clemson much at all. They were just another football team. But, I was definitely pulling for them to beat Nebraska. My memory is probably faulty, but here is what I recall.

Even though Clemson was ranked #1 most folks thought that Nebraska was the bigger, stronger, more physical team and that Clemson would have to rely on "finesse and deception" to beat them. (Part of the stereotyping of the ACC as being an inferior conference and the Nebraskas and Oklahomas and Michigans, etc. were the "power" teams.

Well, somewhere in the second quarter (I think) the announcer said, "Clemson is playing power football" or "Clemson is playing smash-mouth football."

I remember being surprised at the comment because I had bought into the hype that Nebraska was the bully. And, I also remember that the announcer said it as though he was surprised at the fact that Clemson seemed to be the bigger, stronger team on the field.

Our D was nasty in 1981, 2016 & 2018

Jul 20, 2021, 9:57 AM

2016 was a monumental effort by the offense and defense.
2017 our O wasn't there. KB didn't have enough and we suffered.
2018 was a stifling effort by the D, and precision execution by the O.

2019 & 2020, our D was not up to 2018 standards and we ran into two offenses with great O-Line play and it showed.

Here's to the 2021 D getting back to being nasty.

Several things stood out about that season.

- Unranked in the preseason
- 6 other teams were #1 before Clemson (wonder if
7 teams ranked #1 in a season was a record)
- UGA: 9 turnovers; Buck Belue clearly was rattled
- Dale Hatcher punted to the top of the Superdome
during warmups at the Tulane game
- Jeff Bryant may have had the best play of the
regular season recovering the backwards pass at UNC
- The Greenville News article "Tigers are 10-8 cious"
- Dave Remington and Dean Steinkuhler could not stop
the Fridge and Devane
- Homer Jordan was so exhausted and dehydrated at the
Orange Bowl, he needed an IV for fluids after the game
- The SI cover was a really big deal back then.

Remington/Steinkuhler weren't use to getting called for hold

Jul 20, 2021, 11:19 AM

Had a Nebraska fan in front of me listening on a NE radio feed... He told me Remington came off the field and told the coaches he needed some help. Shortly after, Steinkuhler picked up his first holding call... They didn't have an answer for that DLine...

That was obviously a great team .....but the reason why is no mystery. If I am correct 22 players that were on that team went on to play professional football.
