Lawton Swann made a point in his show earlier....

Oct 21, 2013, 7:44 PM

....about the team not being focused on the bus ride; players hamming it up for the cameras.

I had not watched the game but had DVR'd it, so I went back and watched the bus ride for the first time.

Swann was right.... and I'll never call out players by name on this board, but if you haven't seen the bus ride or didn't notice, let me just say the main culprit made some HUGE mistakes in the game.

Maybe it's already been discussed on here (everything else has, it seems), but I think it was an excellent point that maybe, just maybe, the players went out there thinking FSU was gonna wilt under all the hype and attention given our entrance and DV's crowd noise.

I've also thought all season that our coaching staff goes a little overboard with talking about our team's successes and strengths rather than downplaying all the hype. I think Tajh has felt the weight of the world on his shoulders to live up to all the expectations. I don't doubt he's questioned his decision to return to Clemson this year.

I think the team - coaches and players - learned some huge lessons in humility Saturday night. Lesson #1: no more cameras on the bus.

Also, I think they have been parading Boyd in front of the cameras and press too much. Also heard that his mom has been in and out of hospital. If so, he has had too much on his plate.
Pretty sure the interview requests will slow down now.

Plus..the 2nd Team bus show 4 TV was not as good as 1st***

I posted last week that I went to the West........

Oct 21, 2013, 7:58 PM [ in reply to Re: Lawton Swann made a point in his show earlier.... ]

End zone for a few hours and the entire time that I was there, Tajh kept getting escorted from one interview to another. I couldn't believe how many news agencies were present and how many interviews this kid was giving. Our SID was just walking him all over the West End Zone inside and out. I spoke with him a few times last week and he seemed as calm as always but that day in the West End zone made me wonder if he was asked to do too much.

Our athletic dept needs to learn to say no. They're asking

Oct 21, 2013, 8:04 PM

Too much of some players. I'd suggest that all interviews be done Monday, then total media blackout. Focus on the game.

No player interviews should be allowed. Players do not need to be put on display. Too much distraction.

You're searching now.

I assume by your response....

Oct 21, 2013, 8:28 PM

....that the soles of your shoes have never stepped foot onto a football field except possibly as a cheerleader, band member, or rushing the field after a game to congratulate the players....

But just so you'll know, focus is a pretty important component of a successful football team.... especially in the moments leading up to the "game of the century" or whatever this game was being called.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

On the other hand I guess you have rode a team bus before

Oct 21, 2013, 9:21 PM

a game and can tell by a player's facial expression how focused they are.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Couldn't see his face....

Oct 21, 2013, 9:42 PM

....but to answer your question, yes the peace signs at the camera and body language suggested that he wasn't taking things too seriously.

And his play on the field that night further supports my point.

But again, it was also more than the bus ride.... I think it may have had more to do with the buildup over the first six weeks; the team hearing too much about how great they are. I never thought we were worthy of being the #3 team in the first place. Ironically, I think we are now where we should be at #9.

I believe they will be a more focused team now after the FSU beatdown. The media hype will definitely be less now.

Don't know if it hurts or helps but Dabo loves a camera

Look at his press conferences compared to the rest of the top 25. Dabo goes on and on throws out clichés and has 45 minute post game comments

Most coaches are seen as giving the press a ton of love if they stay 20 minutes

The head coach had to authorize all those interviews with Tajh. I just think it got to them. On top of that, the bus thing was overblown, it worked great the 1st time but you can't match what they did for UGA so why try. This time it looked like they were trying too hard and yes, Dabo gave them too much access

It is hard to say no when you have never been in the spotlight as a 1st time head coach, 1st time CEO, VP, senior manager etc so I give him a bit of a pass.

However, he must learn that less is more when it comes to stuff like this. People would be begging for more had they left the buses out this time, let them beg, makes it seem more mysterious and much cooler. He has to learn to turn it off from time to time, even his post game hand shakes are a bit over played

at least he was not drunk...

Oct 21, 2013, 9:15 PM

and if you don't think your OBS does not use clichés, you are delusional.

Of course he approved all those interviews for Tajh. When you have a Heisman candidate, you want him to get all the exposure he can.

Feel sure the AD authorized the bus scenes. Do you not think a school wants to stay in the good graces of ABC/ESPN. You just don't tell them no for such things. What made the bus ride not a spotlight was because the players acted like they were being driven to a funeral....well, maybe they were. You think Dabo told them to just sit there? There was no emotion at all on the bus they showed on TV

If Dabo started acting any differently, it would not be Dabo. He is who he is.

All good points.

In his postgame handshakes, he is always hugging on the coaches and stuff. Saturday was the quickest handshake I've seen him have so far with a head coach after a game and he still hugged on Jimbo and I remember everytime post game Jimbo has this weird look on his face when Dabo is talking to him.

Yes, the bus/hill video this time just wasn't the same. Felt different even though it was pretty much similar to the first time.

And Dabo does talk too much to the media. Guy loves to hear himself I guess.

We need to act like we have been here before instead of worrying about decibel records and bust trips around the stadium. Clemson seems like a bunch of starry eyed Hollywood dreamers this week when it game to all of the hoopla.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

they weren't hamming it up as much as Winston

Oct 21, 2013, 9:01 PM

that dude was all ham before the game

I'll be honest, I didn't even pay attention to who it was

Oct 21, 2013, 9:04 PM

at the time. However, I think that Winston had his team in the palm of his hand. It reminded me of a great speaker or preacher getting his team ready.

Winston seems to have a lot of confidence and his teammates believe in him. I was very impressed with him.

I don't have a problem with light hearted and hamming it up if that is what your team does. FSU obviously does well when they are just focused yet loose and laughing

Whatever Clemson's plan was did not work. I didn't see all the interviews with Winston and Jimbo all week like I saw the ones with Tajh and Dabo

maybe they actually locked it down and focused then come gametime they were ready and could chill a bit
