Lawrence Philips dies in suspected suicide....

Jan 14, 2016, 3:14 PM

Phillips was a star running back at Nebraska and a first-round pick for the St. Louis Rams in 1996, but his NFL career only lasted three seasons , although he also spent some time in the Canadian football league.

He was sent to a California prison in 2008 after being convicted of domestic violence, driving his car into three teenagers, false imprisonment and vehicle theft.

While serving a 31-year sentence, he was accused of choking his cellmate to death last April. He was awaiting trial for that murder.

What a shame not to mention a complete waste of talent. Of course, anger management issues plagued him throughout his college and professional career. He got into trouble and was suspended while at Nebraska for assaulting his girlfriend. While with the Dolphins and 49'ers , Phillips also got into legal trouble for misdemeanor battery and felony assault.

He was just 40 years old.

He wrote a letter to his mom earlier this year

...telling her that his anger was growing, and he wasn't sure he'd be able to contain it much longer. He said he thought he was really going to hurt himself or someone else soon.

I wanted to hear his thoughts on the Rams moving to LA

Shocker

How many crimes had he committed, including killing his own cellmate?

Tom Osbourne kept him on the Nebraska team after he beat up a female...

This is why I'm glad we have had coaches that do the right thing. Championships aren't worth having stories like these. Osbourne kept him on the team because they didn't have a back as good as Phillips, Osbourne taught him doing wrong was ok if you win a football game
