Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

I had him for English as a freshman I think. I never knew till years later what he went through in WWII. A great American and Clemson hero

He never mentioned anything of his military experiences when I had him. Still, I enjoyed his course...he even asked to keep one of my papers, which was fine by me!

It's only in the past several years I've learned of his true legacy. Simply incredible!

Is there a book, or is anyone working on one, about

Mar 21, 2018, 3:16 PM

Col Skardon and his experiences? I know there are several books about the Death March and POW camps, but I think it would be equally interesting to read/learn about his life back in the States and how he adapted, struggled, etc.

FYI, there is a book called "Some Survived: An Eyewitness Account of the Bataan Death March" that was written by another Clemson alum, Manny Lawton ('40). I have it - bought it at a local B&N and had no idea at the time it was by and about a Clemson grad. Excellent book about some incredibly strong and courageous men.

Had the opportunity to hear him speak at my son’s ring ceremony in 2005 or so. He told the story of how his ring saved his life. Truly inspiring.

Congrats to him! What an honor for him, and an honor for us in that he is an alumnus, and former faculty member. Jimmy Dyess, another Clemson alumnus earned the other 2 highest honors awarded as he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and he also was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Very proud of our military heritage!

Dugatiger mentioned the Congressional Medal of Honor (CMH), the highest medal awarded. Most, unfortunately, are awarded posthumously. When I was recalled to active duty during the Korean War, I was in Japan for a few days before going on to Korea. Several of us went down to the PX for a beer. I saw a Staff Sgt. wearing a CMH ribbon and saluted him. After we got to our table the guys asked me why I was saluting a Staff Sgt. I told them he was wearing a CMH ribbon. They didn't even know what the CMH was. Later on I went over to his table and asked if I could buy him a beer. He accepted my offer and we chatted for a while. He received his medal for action during WW2 but he did not want to talk about it. I knew of two guys who had received the CMH posthumously but this was the only living medal winner I have ever met. I felt like and knew I was in the presence of a true hero. That's the same feeling I get when I'm around Ben Skardon.

Like several others on here I had Colonel Skardon as a professor at Clemson - in my case for Public Speaking and also for Technical Writing. While he had no PhD after his name, he was one of the best teachers I ever had.
I had no idea at the time about his service to our country. He is truly a great man and makes me so proud there are Tigers like him in the world. Certainly an inspiration to us all.

Salute! Thank you Sir for your service and sacrifice for my freedom!

Also, thank you for being a humble teacher that so many of us learned so much from while you never mentioned the true superhero you where. I’m so grateful to have known you. Salute! ????????
