Question about OL Recruits coming in
Jan 2, 2015, 3:21 PM
|
|
I know that we have some studs coming in the 2015 class to give a much needed boost to our O-Line, but my question is can they help right away? There aren't too many freshman OL out there just tearing it up. Do they need a season to get stronger/learn the offense or can they come in right away and produce?
If we can get the O-Line squared away early next season and pair that with the depth at RB and WR we're going to have, DW is going to have a heck of a season.
Already Pumped for September! Go Tigers!

I think you could see one or 2 of them used for depth and avoid redshirts. I don't believe any of them will start.

A true frosh on your OL usually means you've got problems

I know some people on here like to talk some of these guys up, but you don't just come in (even in Jan) and start your first year on OL unless depth is just completely in the crapper. I think Dalton Freeman was the last to do it with us, and that was mostly done to get through a depth crisis.
In theory, we have enough returning linemen to avoid starting the freshmen. It remains to be seen how hard those linemen will work over the summer/spring/fall, so we may end up having no choice but to start Hyatt or Fruhmorgen. I sure would like to see them redshirt, though. Build for the longer term, even if they might be able to contribute towards the end of their first true freshman year.

Hyatt will start from Minute 1, probably at right tackle, assuming Isaiah Battle returns at LT. He's that good and Gore has been less than convincing. Fruhmogen will almost certainly play as well. Could easily see one of the inside guys beating a redshirt and starting at guard opposite Crowder too.
No, it's not ideal, but especially with Hyatt, we're not talking a 5-year guy anyhow. You have Hyatt for four years and you consider yourself fortunate.

the incoming OL candidates are one of the main reasons I feel as if the OL will be better in 2015.
I can't imagine a scenario where at least two of these new guys don't see a ton of playing time and perhaps even start.
The days when it was a foregone conclusion that freshman OL would red shirt are a thing of the past. Especially at a program like ours that has under recruited OL for so many years in a row.

Not a matter of starting...I'm sure at least one of em will be good enough to make two deep. Avoiding a redshirt doesnt mean starting...and not starting doesesnt mean lack of valuable play time.

So if you aren't starting, you aren't going to get meaningful playing time unless someone has an injury and misses weeks.
It certainly happened this year, but it's not a given. Aside from that, you're relegated to mop-up duty when we're up big late in the game.

IMO, OL is the hardest position to come in and contribute right away. I don't think ANY of the incoming freshman, at OL. Are big or strong enough to play right away.
Not even sure you would see any of those as a RED SHIRT freshman. I would say all 4 will need at least 3 years.

To start for "elite" teams right out of the box.
