Last Days Of Knight - New 30 for 30

Feb 4, 2018, 11:12 AM

First off, let me say that I think these 30’s for 30’s are very well done and amazing, love that they do them.

However, I’m a current Clemson student with multiple generational ties to Indiana University.

For anyone that is around for that era, was Knight abusive and over the line most of the time?

Obviously his coaching style would never work in today’s era and not justifying anything he might have done, but he won games and branches out some great coaches like K.

Curious to hear from anyone that was alive during that time or any insight.

probably over the line. Remember that he started in a different era. Refused to evolve and change tactics and style. At the end, was so defiant that he might have been losing it a bit. For sure over the line in the later years based on the different culture

His biggest failing as a coach was not being able to change

I can’t think of a more traditionally iconic sports program that has fallen faster than Indiana BB without Bobby. They’re not even relevant. I could not have played for him but he was a winner (in more ways than one)??!

I agree with 72. He was a winner but neither me nor my son would have played for him. He was also very entertaining. You never knew what he was going to do in a game but he could flat out coach. Used too much discipline on his players. I like him overall though. Stood up to snobbish administration types.

He did get over the top but to answer your question. No, he was not over the top “ most “ of the time. There were incidents as you’ve discovered watching but for the most part he was just tough and demanded excellence from his players but by and large, most of the players that played for him really liked him. He wouldn’t have lasted as long as he did if it was most of the time. HTH.

He was an excellent coach and very demanding. He had a difficult time controlling his emotions, the same emotions most coaches have who probably said under their breath, "that's what I would like to do". The thing I remember most about him was the chair throwing incident.
