"Lack of support for basketball"
Mar 15, 2017, 8:12 PM
|
|
I'm tired of the argument that there is no support for basketball at Clemson. I was a student at Clemson during the Rick Barnes years and there was support aplenty. Fans packed Littlejohn for every game and there was a genuine excitement around the program. I remember lining up for tickets at 3:00 am outside Littlejohn. Rick Barnes took a group of average players and made them believe they could win. He excited a fan base that was complacent about basketball. Win and that will return. The support is there but has gone into hiding after years of poor coaching and below average results. We have spent a boat load of money to build a new facility, it's time to find a coach that reignite the fan base and pack the place. Go Tigers!

Agree 100%. I hate when people give that argument. The reason we don't pack it out is that people don't want to spend their time and hard earned money on a failing product

No it's not. This team had scorers and scored plenty.
Get your ### arguments in line. Every yahoo screamed about boring Clemson when we won by defense.
Egads majority of Clemson fans do not know basketball well enough to really support it. It is football #1, baseball #2 and then maybe basketball.
Basketball at Clemson from a fan's perspective is just like south carolina in football.
Ego like UNC but a trophy case like.... Clemson's.

I remember lying in my Memphis hotel room watching us lose to Minnesota in the Sweet 16 and thinking " Clemson may have arrived as a basketball team " and that Barnes had taken us to the next level . Then he took the Texas job . Larry Shyatt happened . We've never really recovered . With the exception of the run we made in the '89 tournament and a couple of good years under Barnes and OP , we just haven't done it . No way I will ever believe it's the fault of the fans . It's got to be done with the right staff , and they have to want to not only come to Clemson to do something special but also want to maintain that success and not just use it as a jumping off point . Brad Brownell is a fine guy , but he hasn't gotten it done , and ultimately that falls in him alone . Captain of the ship and such .

And we had more support for those #### poor teams than now with a better product, facility, etc. students now are not the same type as when I was there. I really hate that they couldn't incorporate the standing area under the baskets somehow. Back em up a bit or something. That was what set us apart

I remember camping out for tickets against Duke and UNC when we knew we would win. I remember OPP (Oliver Purnell's Posse) shirtd being extremely popular. I remember people actually tailgating the BB games. Like Pepridge Farm, I remember.

Can confirm. And it wasn't just the Duke/UNC games.

Even the games against teams like FSU and Miami were filled to capacity.

I was a student during that time and for ACC games there was almost always a good environment.

What is laughable statement . I remember games when OP was here Littlejohn being packed to the rafters and tickets were $80 outside the gate. Fan support was tremendous. The reason for lack of support is because the product sucks and Brad Is unable to inspire any excitement

Improve the product on the court with a real culture change at coach and you will get support. Brownell has lost the fans; he lost the team last night. I remember the Barnes and Purnell years. We supported those teams because we put quality teams on the court.

Probably not the best time to post this since we had less than 3000 fans at last night's game.***

Clemson fans have certainly lost interest. Keep Brownell

And it will only get worse. He's lost the fans.

put an entertaining product on the floor, people will pay to see it. When the play is bad, and the players AND coach don't seem to have a clue / give a ####, people will find something better to do.

It looks like after 7 years DRad and Pumpers would be smart enough to figure that out....
