Kudo's to Dabo for masterminding that win on Saturday

Oct 25, 2022, 10:49 AM

Pulling DJ and putting in Klubnick forced Syracuse to have to adjust on Defense. Prior to that, they were downhill, loose, and gaining confidence. Not that Klubnick did anything monumental but he's a different look. He made them have to sit back on their heels to figure out what he was going to do. Not to mention I thought it energized the offense and I thought gave the defense a spark after they saw how Syracuse's demeanor changed. Its almost like they started playing more conservative and not aggressive.

Either way the credit goes to Coach Swinney for trusting his instincts and not waiting too long to do it. Give that man his credit. Best coach in the Country!

Putting Klubnik in forced cuse to commit resources...

Oct 25, 2022, 11:06 AM

to the pass. Safeties weren't going to have 3-4 seconds to run all the way across the field anymore because CK is able to make decisions and get the ball out QUICKLY. DJU is seldom capable of that, and EVERYONE knows it. CK is also a much more elusive runner, and everyone knows that too. Putting Klubnik in CLEARLY took a lot of pressure off of the running game because, despite his lack of experience and polish, CK presents problems for defenses that DJU cannot.

On his post-game show, when remarking on DJU's first interception he just said "slow... slow". So you can thumb me down if you want. Who cares? The truth becomes more obvious with each passing week. Either the guy gets better or he's going to end up digging a hole we can't dig out of.

I understand what you are saying. I like DJ but agree that he is best suited to drop back and hand off. This offense does not lend itself to his abilities imo.

Everything about the offense went into a higher gear when CK came in.

Then the offense should be tweaked

Oct 25, 2022, 11:16 AM

to optimize DJ's strengths and limit his weaknesss.

Isn't that what coaches are supposed to do?

Otherwise, it's a round peg/square hole type of situation, which isn't fair to anyone.

excellent job of disguising DJ's weaknesses and maximizing his strengths. We are 8-0 after all. The ball falling out of his hand when he drew back to pass and the turnovers he made Saturday had nothing to do with the play calling or scheme.

There is a limit to what you can accomplish with a QB with an extremely fragile confidence.

Will agree to disagree. I like DJ but would you have recruited him to run this scheme knowing what you know now?
Highly rated in high school and looks to be imo a good candidate for a pro style QB. But I have watched a lot of football and DJ is out of his comfort zone.

That's not giving a fair shake to DJ imo.......

Oct 25, 2022, 1:33 PM [ in reply to That is a false narrative. Our coaches have done an ]

up until the Syracuse game DJ has been the ONE consistently good part of our offense this year...........he has ONE bad game and now the narrative is......."well if DJ keeps playing like this we're gonna lose"(not your narrative, but I've seen in on here)........or "he now has fragile confidence".

We've been VERY inconsistent as a team each week and each week it's a different "issue".......it's like a whack-a-mole situation, just when you think we're making some headway in one area something else happens.............prime example of shipley fumbling for the first time.........who saw that coming.??

I don't think this is or will be a "trend" for DJ........it happened once. What's more concerning is why the TEAM as a whole hasn't been able to put together 4 quarters of good football in any game this year...........maybe that's a trend??.......or maybe this bye week is a "get right" time and we'll dominate the rest of the year......not expecting that, but hopefully it happens.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My point was that the offense has been tweaked to maximize

Oct 25, 2022, 2:08 PM

DJ's abilities and minimize his inabilities. Judge was trying to impugn our coaching staff, which I feel is a false narrative. There is no playoff capable offense that doesn't depend on the QB making good reads and delivering the ball accurately and on time or not dropping the ball on the ground.

Our struggles Saturday were almost entirely on DJ and had nothing to do with the suggestion that our system and play calling have not been tweaked to maximize his strengths and minimize his weaknesses. As Dabo pointed out, we moved the ball up and down the field, but turned it over before we could score, one of which was a one play 14 point swing.

DJ's confidence is fragile. We saw that last year and last Saturday. When he loses it, he doesn't get it back. Thus the change at QB. As Dabo said, "I wasn't going to let him get a 4th turnover."

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, DJ was off Saturday.........

Oct 25, 2022, 2:21 PM

I don't think that one game kills his confidence moving forward, his in game confidence was shaken for sure and he needed to be pulled............He's a different QB this year than last year (IMO), until I see it affect him two games in a row I'll chalk his "off game" up as an exception rather than the rule.

I also think a lot of DJ's perceived weaknesses are falsely magnified by the lack of WR talent compared to what DW4 & TL16 had. Not saying that DJ is the QB that DW/TL was, but he's also not playing with a STACKED DECK of WRs either which gives the appearance (sometimes false perception) that DJ has more flaws than he may truly have.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't either. But, he has shown that he doesn't recover

Oct 25, 2022, 2:37 PM

it during a game once he loses it. I'm not suggesting he's shot for the year. I would imagine we see that frazzled inability to perform the routine play at some point again this season.

There may not be a Tee Higgins or Mike Williams in the group, but I would argue that the wide receivers perceived weaknesses are magnified by DJ's inconsistency in going through his progressions, spotting open receivers(as was demonstrated after the FSU game via video analysis), anticipating receivers coming open and throwing receivers open.

I saw Saturday like you in a lot of ways, except my view

Oct 25, 2022, 11:37 AM

of Klubnick was that he was like the relief pitcher who comes in for a few innings when the starter is having a bad outing.

He changed things up while he was in there, made the hitters hesitant and begin to overthink a bit, but you still don’t know if he could have done that the whole game as the starting pitcher.

I like Cade’s foot speed and escapability and his ability to stretch plays. I love that when he came in, it took pressure off of the running backs and made things easier for the OL. He was effective Saturday, but he seemed more like Chase Brice than Trevor Lawrence in this particular opportunity.

I would love to know how Cade might perform if he had a whole weeks of prep with the starters. But I also wonder what the opponents might do with a full week to prepare exclusively for Cade.

Honestly, I hope we don’t have to find out until next season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Fair enough, and in the end...

Oct 25, 2022, 1:20 PM

it all worked out for the Tigers. What we know is that the starter couldn't get out of his own way and very nearly cost us a game that we should have won by several touchdowns. Syracuse was banged up in the secondary; we should have been able to abuse them with the passing game. Really, this should have been a first half BLOWOUT by Clemson. DJU not only failed to take advantage of that, he did the opposite. While Klubnik certainly has a ways to go in his development, it's unfair to assume that he would have been any worse than DJU as DJU was just plain AWFUL.

I can easily see a time coming THIS SEASON when we will need Cade Klubnik to come in and win the game for Clemson by doing more than just handing off to Will and Phil. I sure hope that he's getting adequate reps in practice to prepare him. I think Dabo Swinney is smart enough to know this; he's also smart enough to handle a somewhat tempestuous QB room (not the first time for that - see 2018),

when he was in. The game really wasn't even close. Clemson dominated Syracuse in every stat expect TO's .

If you want to make it all about QB's... DJ had 3 which easily cost Clemson 6-10 points and gave Cuse 7. Cade had Zero TOs

Klubnik was put in to run zone read.

Oct 25, 2022, 11:49 AM [ in reply to Putting Klubnik in forced cuse to commit resources... ]

He wasn't put in to throw the ball. He's very athletic and good at running zone read. Cuse couldn't stop the run.

He was really late on the out throw to Ngata and several other passes were basically scramble drills. I'm not taking anything away from Cade, but he wasn't making quick decisions in the passing game. He did, however, bring an energy and leadership that the offense desperately needed. Also the ability to run.

was seen previously in the game where the QB was throwing INT after INT, fumbling down by the goal line, and otherwise putting Clemson at risk against a team that we should have beaten the shyatt out of.

Dabo was also smart in using timeouts at the end of the 2nd quarter to give our offense another drive. We got 3 points right before half.

Oct 25, 2022, 12:06 PM [ in reply to Re: Kudo's to Dabo for masterminding that win on Saturday ]

I do not know who stinkco is but this is my thoughts on why DJ was in there on the last play.

I noticed this when it happened and mentioned to those setting nearby that it was a great decision. I can guarantee you that DJ has much more experience/practice than Cade when it comes to taking a snap under center. If taking a snap under center was such a low risk play why do all teams in this situation place a player 10 yds back and have two other players surrounding the QB? Those two players around the QB are not there to protect the QB. They are there to fall on a miss handled snap, that's why they are facing inwards toward the QB and not outward to look for someone to block. To me it shows just how our coaching staff practices what it preaches, "take care of the little things because they matter as much as the big things". I can also guarantee you that in the few seconds that this decision had to be made the coaches were not thinking about DJs future mental state, they were only thinking about who is the best player for that situation.

It only serves to undermine any legitimate criticisms you may have.

To answer your question though, the post above has it right in my estimation. I'd imagine DJ has much more experience in practice taking the snap from under center for that critical situation.

They seemed to gain a step after Cade came in the game. I think we finally got that other 10% out of them.
