or at least I must assume OU is Oklahoma? They had an express out of there compared to everybody else.

Shows we are average on transfers out but don't use the portal to add to roster.
I think Dabo's philosophy is that you take care of your locker room first because that is who is playing the next game for you. Venables stated something very similar in his comments to the OU gathering on Monday. So, I assume that he got this from Dabo.
Recruiting is important and it's important to build relationships with recruits, but relationships with those you already have on the team is more important. And I think that is why Dabo does not use the portal. He will have to figure out how not to let it interfere with his locker room philosophy before he uses it.

With the exception of South Carolina, all of those teams are

better than us this year.
Hopefully that’s not a sign that the transfer portal is hurting us, but it’s hard to ignore that as a possibility.

First - the guys that transferred from Clemson this year weren’t getting playing time here with the exception of DK and his was a disciplinary issue. And they wouldn’t be starting at any of the other schools listed except USuCk.
Second - if you look at the “net” transfers in/out our number is 22. Bama is 23, OU is 26. UGA is 16 and OSU is 14. SC is 20. All of them except OSU have more transfers out than we do. This is why they have bigger recruiting classes than we do. That and everyone knows Bama over-recruits and forces guys out every year so they have a high number of transfers out but not as many in as OU or SC.
Conclusion - the portal is neither hurting or helping us.

Thanks LBB for putting this together and posting. Fair number of schools in the net 20-25 range. That’s a lot, 20-30% of the 85 you can have on scholarship. With such a lack of structure to the portal in its current form coaches will understandably do what they need to do to win. My question is, how far off are we from the top teams being a one-season all-star band of portal mercenaries and 5 star freshmen?

I think to really explore these numbers you need to include early draft entries.

Bama with 34 more players into their system over 7 years.

That's a recruiting class and half more than us. UGA with 32, OSU with 25 and OU with 11 more.
While Clemson might be better at player development, the increased numbers are an advantage.

I’d say over-recruiting vs finding the right fit.

Dabo likes to recruit the guys that fit our program whereas those other schools are handing out offers like they’re candy. A lot of those other recruits probably wouldn’t get much more than the obligatory gauge of interest.
The sad thing about the portal is it makes it too easy to look for greener pastures. Some of the guys on that list would have probably had a significant amount of playing time considering the injuries we had. It doesn’t sound like we have many guys leaving bc they don’t like it there but that they want to play and have been passed by on the roster.
I get Dabo’s philosophy and I know he was dead set against the Juco transfer system, but I think he needs to look at it to fill in for spots we miss in recruiting. Everyone likes to point out the handful of transfers that make some noise for a new team, but how many are still riding the pine? I don’t know how much, if any, eligibility Chase Brice would have had, but he bounced from Duke to App State. Did that improve his stock at all? Maybe this could have been his super senior COVID year and we might be in the CFP.

Those schools have always taken the max number of kids every year and then the ones who can't compete are kicked out or leave on their own when they see the writing on the wall.
It's always been this way and part of Dabo's culture is he doesn't do that to the kids.
We get recruits because of the culture, so for every person saying we should do the same thing, realize some of the players we get are coming here because we AREN'T doing that.
