KB still won't hold the laces when passing the ball

Aug 5, 2017, 1:07 AM

and he holds the ball towards the small end. He still reminds me of the bad passing QB (Stinkin Pinkins) at USUC and receivers had fits trying to catch his passes. The other QB's seem to hold the laces, and I've never known QB's to prefer not holding the laces, so I have the confuse as to why he likes to do it that way. I guess if he throws a great pass, then fine, but I just don't get it.

Which is why he's a running back and not a QB

Bryant isn't the only QB that holds a ball near the back end...

Based on the pics it's not just about hiding towards the back. Is the fact that he doesn't touch the laces. It is highly unusual.

*holding

Stupid auto correct

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You may want to contact the coaching staff to let them know.

Aug 5, 2017, 8:24 AM

I'm sure it's something that they have over-looked. No way he can play D1 ball like that.

Streaking Tiger is correct. No one needs to be a S/A about coaches overlooking it. Given enough reps you can definitely learn to throw the ball any way. However, and I'm not speaking for st but it is strange at this level to hold the ball the way he does.

What coaches explained to me is it doesn't matter too much on short passes but throwing that way on a deeper ball you can lose your control and increase the chances of throwing a wobbly ball.

I think it's a fair question from st. Also may explain why he was rated in the 80's being recruited and not the upper 90's like a Trevor is.

What QB holds the ball in the middle and why would it be harder to catch just because he didn't hold the laces??

There's plenty of pics where Deshaun holds it on the laces but there's several like this where he doesn't.

All you need is one picture. Obviously that Watson guy sucks out loud. Holding the ball like that, he'll obviously never accomplish anything unless he's moved to WR.

On quick passes and screens its more about getting the ball out of your hands as fast as possible than worrying about the laces. As long as he gets the job done I don't care if he throws the ball underhanded

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It could be the type of route as well

Aug 5, 2017, 9:21 AM

I'd guess that on short routes, such as a quick screen, he is more worried about getting the ball out quickly and doesn't have time to drop back and adjust his grip. He also has large hands, so that might affect it.

I played QB. On quick fire routes (ones where you don't take a drop step like screens, quick slants, etc.) the coaches tell you to get the ball out as quickly as possible. You don't have a fraction of a second to correct the ball position in your hand because you want to get the ball to you play maker and give him as much room as you can to make a play. We run A LOT of quick fire routes in our offense. The pics you are seeing are from those. Find us a picture of KB throwing a read route or long ball without holding the laces and we can have this conversation.

That might be true. I have also been told by coaches who watch him that KB's mechanics are still a mess...his footwork is apparently still erratic, he doesn't square his shoulders correctly, and he tramps all over the midline. An even larger criticism is the fact that way, way too many balls come out late because he doesn't seem to trust his eyes or process information well.

One thing I do keep reminding myself is that this is still college, many players who cannot play a lick at the beginning can see the light come on - see Kevin Dodd for one serious example - and that progress is not always linear. KB still has fall camp to get it together and you never know when you'll see that light come on.

I'm still hoping he does make it. He's by a mile our best athlete at QB and that's a dimension you just cannot teach...if he can give us even a reasonable facimile of what Watson offered as a passer his legs will give our O an entirely different dimension this year. But some of those mechanical problems are yellow flags, if not red ones quite yet.

His mechanics still were not great as of this spring. Sorry.

I believe that Unitas never used the laces. Folks really don't have to worry about this.

Go back and watch KB's high school film. Very good passer and nothing like any #### ever.
