Do we have the resources?

Mar 22, 2021, 1:59 PM

As you look across college sports currently and in the past very few schools have had been consistently basketball and football powers. Bama, ND, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio State have all had some basketball moments but not consistently. Kansas, UCLA, Indiana, UNC, Duke, Kentucky football, speaks for itself.

So is this just a matter of interest, focus, resources? I mean we all know the focus in NC has always been basketball and that is just part of their DNA. At Clemson since John Heisman it has always been football.

I think currently you are starting to see more schools putting more into both football and basketball as TV revenues have grown astronomically. This has especially benefited the SEC and Big Ten with their lucrative TV deals and in general large enrollments (compared to many ACC schools). Ohio State, Michigan, Tennessee (forget football currently), Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Florida etc. seem to invest heavily and have had some success in both.

Does Clemson at like 40th in revenue, in a conference the keeps getting further behind the SEC and Big Ten in TV revenue have the resources to be a consistently solid basketball team? I have always said that we would find the money to pay Dabo 9 million, Venables, Elliott and keep up with the SEC football spending but the real effect of the ACC TV contract is the resources not available for use in all the other sports.

Sure there are exceptions where you find that special coach, etc and have some success, but at some point if he does real well you have to pay him and his assistants at a high level. You have to have the resources if you want to go hire the big name coach. Clemson has never done that and not sure they could if they wanted to.

I sure wish we could figure it out because it sure would be fun (as it was in those years we had some basketball success) to have something to cheer about in March.

We were there 3 years ago when we were in sweet sixteen.

But?, I know, we need to be more consistent. Look we should have everything we need now. If not, then let DRad go. Top 40 is ok, but it all comes down to knowing how to evaluate players and coaching them up if you aren't a top 20 program.
Next season is critical for Brad...

Money. Hopefully the new comish can do something. Like tell ND they're in or out. That'd be a start. I've always been amazed at Fla. They compete in every sport consistently. I don't see any reason Clemson can't either.

Imo, Dabo worked smarter and not harder. I really don't see where we're lacking in revenue for basketball. Brad's gotten pretty much whatever he's wanted. Coach Penley did it on a crap budget for years.

I have always said if Kansas State could win in football Clemson could win in basketball. Having spent time in the military at Ft Riley (Manhattan KS) and knowing the dreadful history of Kansas State football it is amazing what Coach Snyder did. Hit transfer market hard but also as you said, he just did less with more. Talent evaluation etc.

says in spite of any deficiencies, I will create success. Consistent and sustained success is what we we want, and it can be done. Ellis had a program worth watching and cheering for along side the success of football from '87 - '92. Barnes had a program that was concerning to opponents, even OP had a team that battled hard and found success although the style of play probably did not best fit postseason play. Brownell has had the opportunity to at least springboard from OP to raise the bar, but has only been equal to OP at best.

What Ford did in football gave bball recruits was an opportunity to see what campus life outside of basketball can be, and that is a selling point. Elden Campbell came all the way across the country to play in the ACC against some all time ACC competition. Dale Davis and Sharone Wright got out of Georgia and chose Clemson. Guys like Michael Tait, Grayson Marshall, Marion Cash, Derrick Forest and Chris Whitney came from various regions of the country to play at Clemson. It can be done, and it can be done on a budget just as well as having the resources to have more assistants and analysts than players...

Why are Gonzaga, UConn, Texas Tech, Baylor, FSU, Oklahoma, both oSu schools, Wisconsin, Iowa, Syracuse and having more consistency making post season runs and we are not?
