The top 64 athletic programs need to tell the NCAA

to kiss off and form their own league. Make those arbitrary clowns as relevant as the NAIA.

He isn't really in limbo as far as playing and proving himself. It's just one less game if they can't play in a bowl.

yeah... that headline really did a disservice to

potential readers, and is actually an untruth in regards to KB's situation... I really hate click bait writers, and he really offered no new info on KB; he just rehashed everything previously reported but added his personal spin, which was completely unwarranted...

Interesting and well written article. Points out what an illogical organization the NCAA is. Still amazing there has been no fallout from Swoffs UNC hand holding during that.

It’s not an athletic issue according to NCAA. Not going to class and getting A’s in fake classes to keep the athletes eligible to play somehow is legal and not athletic related. Hard for me to understand that reasoning. Our friends at NCSU will be made an example of in a few months. The NCAA will give them the max! imo

unc's $20 million was well spent on high priced legal firms

Jul 16, 2019, 11:41 AM

and equally costly PR firms. And, of course, unc claimed absolutely NO taxpayer money went towards paying that debt off.

When unc was approached by the Accreditation folks about offering sham courses, graded and scheduled by a secretary (who was involved with a former unc basketball player), they were threatened with probation and possible academic sanctions. But the unc legal eagles convinced the Accreditation folks that the issue was one primarily of special bonuses to keep athletes eligible to play and weren't really publicized to the rest of the student body.....and unc admitted the whole Af-Am sham was, indeed, for athletes..................However, when it came time to face the NCAA sanctioning folks, the unc legal team switched strategies, and said that only about half of the students involved in the bogus Af-Am courses (word had gotten out over a nearly 20 year period that easy grades were available), & that the courses were available to anyone enrolled. The NCAA tripped all over themselves rushing to acquit unc and avoid serious sanctions to the oldest public university in the country and thus killing one of their basketball cash cows in what has frequently been referred to as the "worst academic scandal in NCAA history"

Say what you will, unc has lost any sort of moral/ethical respect after years of "The Carolina Way" propagandistic horsemanure. Coaches, advisors, tutors, department heads, etc were lost to unc as sacrificial lambs to make sure the "cheatin' tarholes" (by their own admission) fielded competitive athletic squads---mainly basketball---with folks who had to be given extra benefits illegally to keep them eligible to play.

Let the truth be ever told to those who want to know. There'll be books written about all this in the future.....ESPN Specials too

This is a massive misrepresentation of what happened. UNC was put on probation by the accreditation board and has undergone massive systemic changes from a university perspective as required by the accreditation board to never have something like this happen again. The NCAA couldn't punish them because classes were available to all students and the NCAA doesn't have the authority to determine whether a course at an accredited university is of sufficient academic rigor. It was a perfect storm of events to give UNC an out with minimal punishment and demonstrated exactly how powerless the NCAA is (especially after courts severely undercut the NCAAs Penn State punishment).

UNC was absolutely cheating and "the Carolina Way" is an utter sham, but you don't need to lie about what happened for that to be true. Their argument didn't change at all. It was always that it was a single rogue department offering paper classes that were available to all students.

Its exactly what happened.

Jul 16, 2019, 10:25 PM

4 or 5 investigations and numerous trips to court on FOI requests to finally get unc to reveal some of the damaging info, it took threats of possible contempt of the legal system and retirement fund adjustment to get the former corrupt head of the Af-Am department to finally agree to divulge a limited amount of info.....unc shucked and jived around every legal issue.....I've heard interviews of other unc faculty stating it was systemic academic fraud...(I think one of 'em wrote a book).......which may have been confined to the academic parameters of the AF-Am dept, but the entire athletic department was calling the shots and frequently advised the secretary exactly what grade an athlete needed to maintain eligibility. Tutors and academic advisors were complicit and testified assistant coaches---and in some cases head coaches (who of course denied any knowledge)---were made aware of athletes academic struggles and getting them enrolled into some of the sham courses offered.......estimates that as high as 48% of the students in those classes were athletes....many of whom rarely or never bothered to show up for class.....but it didn't matter because the same secretary was keeping attendance records

And again, this was just info unc finally divulged under terrific legal and media pressure

One fired faculty whistle-blower quietly settled her case out of court--she wasn't even in the AF-AM dept when she was pressured to keep some athlete eligible. I don't think she was allowed to be interviewed by the NCAA (I believe)

This systemic institutional academic fraud went on unchecked for nearly two decades

It was all in the newspapers, in case you missed it.... The News & Observer should've gotten a Pulitzer for the dogged job Dan Kane and crew did finally exposing the corruption

I am pretty impressed by the comment about no Missouri players entering the portal despite contact from other programs. The whole Bryant situation aside that is refreshing to see in today's pack up and run society.
