Just thought I'd share this ( unrelated )....

Sep 8, 2015, 8:12 AM

I was flipping around on my cell phone browser and I had just left Tigernet and I got a pop up. The pop up cleaverly shows your IP address , city and state and then proceeds to claim that some agency, FBI, or whatever has discovered that you have been viewing criminal illicit material and that you are now being monitored and most likely jail time is in your future, etc, etc....

It's pretty convincing. But since I knew it couldn't be me, I closed out the window without clicking ok and deleted my cookies and history.

After a search, I realized that this is called ransom ware. A malware loop designed rather ingeniously into getting, according to investigators, about 3% of everyone it encounters through booby trapped pages to pay a fine to supposedly avoid prosecution.
Apparently one group made 5 million doing this at one point.

It's the first time I have encountered it. Nonetheless, make sure your virus and anti malware software is up to date and just be aware that this is a scam. You did nothing wrong.

I just figured I'd share what I encountered in case any of my Tigernet friends have a similar experience.

ummmm, this isn't ransom ware.

This is called Phishing, Beavis.

Ransomware is when they encrypt the contents of your phone/PC hard drive, and refuse to decrypt them unless you pay them.
