Just so I know for future posting reference...

does anyone on this board still think Dabo should be fired or still disagree with the his hiring?

I'll be the first to admit, I was starting to waiver during the one bad season he had, especially when KP ran down the hill on senior day.

However, he is a great leader and has surrounded himself with the best assistants he could find, and he along with this staff are incredible recruiters. I believe he has a great shot at bringing a national championship to Clemson.

I still think it was a HUGE gamble ...

Aug 20, 2014, 10:12 AM

I sort of view it like America electing Obama. He wasn't my choice but once he got the job, I hoped for all our sakes, that he would be the best we ever had. Fortunately, Dabo worked out alot better for Clemson than Obama did for America.

You are absolutely on target. WHY would they hire someone

Aug 20, 2014, 10:37 AM [ in reply to I would say that the folks who actually did the hiring ]

they considered a huge gamble? Makes no sense with all the other available coaches out there and Dabo has proven he was the RIGHT HIRE.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Uhhh he had absolutely ZERO head coaching experience

Aug 20, 2014, 10:42 AM

Hiring Dabo was without question a tremendous gamble.

Aug 20, 2014, 11:09 AM

The question remains, why would anyone who is responsible for hiring a head coach take such a HUGE gamble?

looks like it blew up in their face. Suck it ESPN!

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Are you saying then, that due to economics, we were

Aug 20, 2014, 12:26 PM [ in reply to Economics for one.... ]

forced to take a huge gamble no matter who we hired?

If they chose Dabo, in part, in order to maintain team unity, then from that angle it would have been a safe choice, as opposed to a gamble. As far as team unity was a concern, bringing in an outsider would have been more of a gamble.

If economics dictated that we simply could not afford a more experienced coach, say a coordinator or head coach, then Dabo would not have been much of a gamble at all, given the economic situation. While we may not have been in a position to pay a "big name" head coach at the time, I find it hard to believe that we could not have at least gotten a decent coordinator, or a head coach from a smaller school. Heck, we interviewed Venables, and had to have some idea of what he would cost, and he wound up coming as an assistant anyway.

The bottom line is that the folks at Clemson who do the hiring decided that Dabo was the best guy for the job given available choices and whatever limitations they had to work with.

Re: Just so I know for future posting reference...

Dabo worked out great for us, but we need to understand the CLEMSON way for recruiting coaches. We typically do NOT go after proven coaches, and it does not always work out. Example: Rick Pitino was available when he left the Celtics, and we opted for OP. How'd that work out for us???? Who wanted to be a Top 5 team in BBall anyway - right? Who wanted to play in the Final Four? Heck - we are a FOOTBALL school.

Let's all just thank our lucky stars that it has worked out. Of course - we've lost 5-in-a-row to our rival. Not sure if any CLEMSON fans are okay with that yet.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Still can't believe we turned Pitino away

Aug 20, 2014, 12:04 PM

Heard he'd walk nekkid through Seneca to get a chance to coach the Clemson Basketball Tigers.
