Fence Update and Cordless Drill Question

Jun 15, 2015, 7:40 AM

Greenr, FatherofGreenr, FatherInLawofGreenr, and the rest of the clan completed placing 70 posts in the ground this weekend. We lack 3 6x6 posts for the gates to have all the posts in the ground. We dug 68 of the holes with an auger on the back of the tractor. We broke it with two to go and Greenr dug the last two by hand (#### THAT NOISE). Anyways, step two is to start installing the planks across the posts. That brings me to my question about Cordless Drills. I need a new one. Mine will not hold a charge at all and is pretty old and weak. I am thinking of upgrading to a 20V Dewalt: http://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DCD771C2-Lithium-Ion-Compact-Driver/dp/B00ET5VMTU/ref=sr_1_2?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1434366507&sr=1-2&keywords=DCD780+20V&pebp=1434366514320&perid=F5A0BCFEC7434051854A

What do you guys use?

I have a Rockwell 18v that I got for the lifetime battery

warranty but I don't think it is sturdy enough for your task.
Dewalt makes good stuff, I like my side grinder and skill saw from them.

Yeah, I saw that, which got me looking again.

But I dont need the light and skil saw. I have those already. This is the 20V drill though.

Go with a brushless motor

Jun 15, 2015, 7:58 AM

I've liked my Milwaukee M18 Fuel Brushless hammer drill.

http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/reviews/a8109/whats-so-great-about-brushless-motor-power-tools/

Pro Tip: Get prices on power tools from Grainger. Tell them you work for (insert biggest manfuacturing facility in your area) and you'll get a hefty discount.

https://www.grainger.com/product/MILWAUKEE-M18-FUEL-Brushless-Li-Ion-13A970?functionCode=P2IDP2PCP

basically you get 2 batteries instead of 1 and they are double the capacity for $50 more.

we actually bent the drive shaft on the PTO. We broke pins

Jun 15, 2015, 8:44 AM [ in reply to How do you break an auger?*** ]

on the auger a couple of times. Some of the new fence posts are near an established tree line, so we had ALOT of roots to contend with. The auger is actually fine.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When the auger hits a root, do you have to take that root

Jun 15, 2015, 9:01 AM

out by hand or does the auger eventually break through? **asking because I am digging fence post holes by hand, and hit a root this weekend that ### near killed me.

Oh, it busts through, but if it gets stuck on it, it keeps

going down and the tractor cannot get it back up. In that case you dis-engage the PTO, rock the tractor back and forth, put posts up under the PTO, try to pry it up, swear alot, kick some dirt, dig out a little dirt, etc. This method worked all weekend.

Digging holes by hand is effing difficult, especially in my DRY backyard.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I only get 1 or 2 holes dug per weekend.

Jun 15, 2015, 9:08 AM

Keeps me from having to buy a shitton of posts all at once. $$

Probably a great drill for the money, but how often do you expect major projects like the fence?

Might be a great deal, or maybe you need to look a little higher end.

would just be for little stuff...well, until I build a building to house all my tools, bike, lawnmower, and stack of Playboys about 6 feet high.

This is why $100 sounds good to me. This feels like the break point of getting a good drill to use without getting into professional grade expensive crap. I don't want to go too cheap though, because my last one was cheap and it was evident.

Jun 15, 2015, 9:39 AM

It's so much lighter and smaller than my old Craftsman 24V, made putting up pickets a lot easier. I also got the cordless circular saw, which is sweet. The batteries are interchangeable and last a long time. I would buy again.
