players who enter the Transfer Portal Potty FAIL to get scholarships at their new school. That is a STAGGERING number, and totally seems to be at odds with how quickly players want to jump into the portal. Is it a case of disinformation, or just these kids thinking "EYE am good enough that EYE will have no problems finding a new scholarship home?"
You would think the Portal would have become "self regulating" by now, with those types of failure numbers. Instead, it seems to be picking up steam. Truly a Head Scratcher.

That's bc the number aren't being reported by the sports media, and they will keep the negative part of the portal a secret as long as possible!!!!

P & D discussed that this morning. It’s actually more than that. Something like 46 percent I think. Those who aren’t chosen have lost a free ride education.

Don’t think many of these portal jumpers are interested in getting an education.

So how do we reconcile the negative consequences of going into the portal with lauding Brad Brownell for supposedly pushing his players into it? I'm not even intending my usual level of snark. The common sentiment on this board is that Dabo should use it more, that basketball players only leave when encouraged/told to do so by Brownell, and that the portal is terrible for college sports and players. How do we reconcile these sentiments without admitting a complete lack of principles?

I think it also is true that a large percentage who enter the portal is not on an athletic scholarship at the school they are leaving. I wonder if the correlation is high between those without scholarships entering and leaving?

I've seen these numbers covered all over the place - especially the Athletic.
IIRC, it was 41% have scholarships at new schools, 8% are attending new schools without scholarships, and the rest (about half) either have yet to sign with new schools or have washed out.
With NIL, I really feel like this is the first season where the system was really 'blown-up.' I have no doubt that the portal will stabilize, but it is so early right now. A lot of these kids think the grass is greener and for some it is. But they all think they are better players than they probably are.
For some kids it will be a good decision, for some it will be a bad decision.
While I haven't appreciated Dabo's approach right now (we could sign some O-line transfers without ruining the morale of the roster) I think that in the long term, it's probably the right approach. Kids are going to see the numbers and be more inclined to stick around. Players have always been able to transfer - they just were burdened with a year off the field for no good reason.
I assume that, come late Spring and Summer, there will be a small flurry of activity in the portal across the board as players find themselves deeper in the depth chart than they expected and teams have needs to fill.

This really is scandalous. The people who most need an education are volunteering not to get one.
In other news, out on the west coach, Lincoln Riley 'released' 38 players off the SoCal roster since they did not fit his plans for the future. The University who pays his salary said not a word. Which is worse? Jocks volunteering to give up schollies or coaches firing them as not worthy of an education?
I'm really glad our coach and our university are not following the herd. If Clemson gives you a scholarship, we really want you to get an education and absent serious wrong doing we keep our side of the bargain.
Go Tigers!!

endear himself to high school coaches. If I were a high school coach, and you boot some of my former players off the team, rescinding their scholarships, without even seeing what they can do on the field, I wouldn't let you back on my campus in future.

I can't find any such article, would love to read the details if you can find it. USC was one of the first schools to guarantee four-year scholarships. Not exactly sure how they could get away with this unless none of those guys wanted to stick around for their degree. They can change the policy going forward but not retroactively. Wish they would insist on staying just to tie up 38 scholarships and really screw Lincoln Riley right out of the gate. The portal shows 24 Southern Cal players total entered the portal for the 2022 cycle.

to pile on top of that, there are something like 1500 "draft eligible" players of which there will be 260 selected (259 in 2020). For every draft pick that makes the team a former draft pick is no longer on the roster...for most the NFL is very short lived.
